I've just moved to Calgary and will me moving into a new house next month. I've noticed from my Hotel that the water here is very hard. Any suggestions on whether or not I should use a water softener. Should I be considering a filter system for drinking water?

Can't see a reason to filter, but a softener between the mains and your hot water heater, dishwasher, etc, might be a good idea

Get a water softener! The water is so bad for your skin and clothes here. And the filter thing to get rid of the awful chlorine smell and taste isn't a bad idea either.

I miss the water back on the farm. Super soft water without a water softener.

One of these times I'll remember to tell dad that I'll take his old softener. My poor skin! Just one shower back home and I'm in heaven.

Yes, if you aren't used to hard water, the water in either Calgary or Edmonton will be an adjustment to say the least. You could wait and see before laying out money for a softener, but that's up to you.

hawkrave do you have ANY tastebuds? It smells like a swimming pool. And tastes horrible.

Water shouldn't have any taste and this stuff does. Yuck

I don't seem to have any problem with my water.... my parents get rust and stuff all the time at their place near Edmonton, but here in Calgary I seem to get fairly soft water.

I love Calgary water. It's not necessarily bad for the skin - it's bad for YOUR skin. The altitude is bad for my skin and sinuses, but after 3 decades, I've adapted. I hate soft water - it feels like soap on my skin and I can't get it off. I can smell and taste pool water fine, but not tap water. That said, hard water likely reduces the life expectancy of anything you have that heats water - bit of an assumption on my part, based on faulty logic. I do know that my hot water heater is slowly producing less, and I expect it's because minerals have built up in the heating pipes. Apparently soft water is better to wash things with, and I expect that's true, but I'd rather not have my hands in it :S Short story - if you have the option, get it for your hot water appliances, but unless you personally prefer it, there's no other reason.

Carpe - it's unlikely you get soft water in Calgary. It's just not soft. More likely you just don't see the real differences. The main difference is not in whether or not they contain chemicals/minerals, but exactly WHICH it contains.

Thanks for the info. I'll definately grab a softener. Not sure what type of purifier I'll get, Reverse Osmosis, or a just a filter system.

I live out in Langdon.. which has terrible water .. enough worse when we first moved out here 8.5 years ago. We installed a softener and osmosis system before we even moved in. I love the soft water ..and the filtered water. But the tap water here is basically GROSS.

So I am moving to Calgary in March and can't decide if I should purchase a softening system.. I bought a fridge with ice water crushed ice with a filtering system so i think I can probably use that for drinking but I can't decide about the softener.

Anybody know how expensive just a softener is.

Also I am going to get rid of my central vac system I think. They actually kinda suck.. LOL
