| Roller Skating at the Terrace nostalgia Posted: 2/21/2006 6:46:50 PM | I saw a roller skating thread and read it everyone seemed to be from London area. I was wondering if there are any oldies around that used to go to the Terrace on Mutual street ... used to be Mutual Arena. I have so many good old memories from there and had a bunch of friends in the 70's that went there too. How about you. I know some of the songs were cheesey but the skate dancing under the turned down lights was fun. Come on admit it .. you had fun too.
I got started by being invited to a skate party by the Toronto Star ... thrown for us paper kids every year.
Years later I met lots of gf's there and got into down hill skiing with some of the people there and liked going down the road after it closed to see the Downchild Blues Band at Forbe's Tavern .
Love to hear your stories .

| Roller Skating at the Terrace nostalgia Posted: 2/21/2006 7:16:58 PM | | I used to go every weekend when I was in Grade 6, 7, and 8. Less regularly in highschool, but that is where I met my first serious boyfriend. Was with him for almost 3 years. Wow, what a great time my girlfriends and I used to have. Oddly enough, I never became a really good skater. Couldn't stop unless I skated toward the boards. Could only skate forward, not backward. And I sure couldn't do that sort of dance skating that I loved to watch so much. My friends and I would wait on the perimeter secretly hoping someone would ask us to join them for the couples skate. And of course we acted like we could care less if we weren't asked. We always had to stop for a drink and hot dog at the food stand and chat it up with whatever boys happened to be around. I don't remember Forbe's Tavern, but I wasn't anywhere near legal drinking age (even with my sister's birth certificate) when I was skating at the forum. | |

| Roller Skating at the Terrace nostalgia Posted: 2/21/2006 7:31:47 PM | | the great thing about the Terrace on Friday night it ended at 11 so it was easy to just head over to any near by club or bar and there were quite a few near by ... it was so close to young and dundas ... and Sam's and A&A records .... so much to do after skating it was a gas. | |

| Roller Skating at the Terrace nostalgia Posted: 2/21/2006 8:03:03 PM | cruising Yonge Street!
what always amazed me was that you could run into people from your own highschool or neighbourhood when you were cruising Yonge Street on a Friday night...

| Roller Skating at the Terrace nostalgia Posted: 2/23/2006 7:02:59 PM | | I didn't skate at the Terrace in the 70's, wasn't in or near Toronto then..... however I did skate there a few times in '88........ had never been on roller skates before but was courageous enough to try it....... a group of us went from Newmarket every week...... last time I went was Dec 27, that was the night I fell and broke my elbow....... not roller skating again..... and now too chicken to try blading either | |
|
| Roller Skating at the Terrace nostalgia Posted: 2/23/2006 9:10:47 PM | | Loved skating there. Also used to go to the Roller Palace and Roller World up in Scarborough.Loved cruising downtown afterwards, hanging out at Sam's and A&A's.Cruising up and down the strip in dad's car, staying down there till all hours of the night, and feeling totally safe. Of course that was over 20 years ago now, great memories. | |

remember the old saying.... when you fall off a horse you have to get up and get back on as soon as possible... or you get to afraid... don't let a fall scare you and hey... with blading they recommend elbow pads helmets kneepad and hand protection especially for novices.
keep the wheels turning and the spirit churning and keep on learning until you die or longer.

| Roller Skating at the Terrace nostalgia Posted: 2/24/2006 5:42:24 PM | | I went to the Terrace. Haven't rollerskated in years until recently, Oshawa has a rollerskating rink on Centre St. and Bond I think, would have to drive by again to be absolutely sure of exact location. | |
|
| Roller Skating at the Terrace nostalgia Posted: 2/24/2006 5:54:57 PM | Well I don't know the Terrace but we used to go to Wheelies in Whitby from the time I was about 8 or 9 until I was a teenager, about 14 or 15... I still have flashbacks of skating there when I hear certain songs on the radio...
Just to give you a hint to the era, some of my fave songs to skate to were:
Bel Biv Devoe- Poison
Digital Underground- The Humpty Dance
ABC- Aiesha
ok you can laugh now...

| Roller Skating at the Terrace nostalgia Posted: 10/15/2006 8:24:23 PM | Wow ... just the thought ... last skating I did was in the early 80's at the University of Guelph on Halloween ... part of my costume ... it worked great ... freeked people out the way I could move through the crowd and dancer etc. It was like floating aroung the room when your the only one on skates. I still remembered how to skate ... like that bicycle thing. the old boot style had a way of letting you move by flexing your ankles slightly side to side and people couldn't even see your movements ... it was eerie cool. I also skated at my performance and poetry reading at my Trails show at Ed Video in 81. It enhanced my movements through the space for the story cycle of the performance and to add a doppleresk aspect while reading in the second performance.
Not sure my bones would take any jolts now but I do still play hockey so probably wouldn't be a problem except ... now I'd be that old guy at the rink .... lol
I think blading would be more like hockey skating ...

| Roller Skating at the Terrace nostalgia Posted: 10/18/2006 6:36:37 AM | I remember the Terrace, as a kid i used to go there every weekend. As a teen, my friends and I would sometimes go there on a friday night half in the bag and sneak a bottle in. Afterwards we would hit Yonge Street and sneak into the Gasworks. | |

| Roller Skating at the Terrace nostalgia Posted: 10/18/2006 7:08:18 AM | I remember it well. I was very young, around 9 years old but I remember the concrete floor, the beige metal lockers, retro chairs and best of all………… the songs “Simple Simon Says” and one of my favourite songs, “You Make Me Feel Brand New” by the Stylistics. Every time I hear either of those songs, The Terrace is the first thought.
Thanks for the flash back!

| Roller Skating at the Terrace nostalgia Posted: 10/18/2006 7:23:02 AM | | I forgot about the Simple Simon song...i remember that one from the Terrace but the song that always reminds me of the Terrace was the song Time Warp. I think they would play those 2 songs back to back. | |

I was having a conversation with my 13 year old about it. She saw a roller rink on TV and said something about it. I was telling her that is what I used to do when I was her age. I loved it there! We used to go every weekend. Met all kinds of boys there...saw a few broken legs happen too...
