This site is pretty strict about redundant threads...but when I try and use the search here I get no results. How am I suppose to know if something has been posted already when search shows nothing?
1) The search function is located on the main Forum List Page, or on any of the sub-forum pages, in the top right corner and looks like this:
2) Preferably, (in the empty box) enter one or two key search words that would most likely appear in the thread subject line.
3) Select "Thread Title" in the drop down box beside it (defaulted already).
4) If you want to search only a specific forum - click on the down pointing arrow and select the appropriate forum you wish. (See points 6,7,8).
5) Click on the "SEARCH" button.
Please note that the key searc words you enter, will be searched for exactly as it is entered, mis-spellings won't be found.
If you enter a partial text string like "repl", the search function will return any threads that have "repl", within any word in the Subject line, Example. Words that may be returned, reply" , "replies" , "replicate" or any other words that contain the string "repl", within it.
This can be useful for commonly misplaced words where the first portion of the word should be spelled correctly, or for words that are spelled using a different tense, eg. replied, reply, replies.
6) Not entering a key search word in the space provided and simply, leaving the search type to "Thread Title" and clicking on search, will retrieve a list of the just recently posted TO existing threads.
7) Not entering a key search word in the space provided and selecting "Newer Threads" and clicking on search, will retrieve a list of the just recently posted NEW threads.
8) Entering a user's name as a key search word, and selecting Username as the search type will retrieve a list of that user's last posted to threads, the same as clicking on their name link above their picture in the forums.
If you want to locate commonly asked questions/answers or suggestions - Please use the key word "FAQ" (Frequently asked Questions), or "SUGGESTION:" in your search and a list of some popular threads will be retrieved.
I put onion rings in the search on the recipe board. Maybe no one has ever posted a recipe for onion rings? I tried orange recipes in the search last week and got the same result? How can I possibly know the exact thread title?
If you searched for onion , or onion ring, or onion rings, and nothing came up, assume there have been no threads created for that subject - hence the importance of concise subject lines.
It does not search the body of the thread, just the Subject line.
Well you would think if someone was posting a recipe for onion rings it would be in the subject line. I guess no one has posted a onion ring recipe so I am free to ask for one. Thanks

agreed, and although I don't suspect the recipes forums is guilty of it much, have a look at the other forums and see how vague or totally unrelated the subject is to the actual content in some threads.
Yeah, sometimes when you start a new thread, you get slammed right away for it being redundant. Ill use sex and dating forum as an example because i see it there most often. If you start a thread on say...shaving, it might not come up in a search, as peopel ahve started the same thread, but used " do you like it smooth or hairy" as their title. So using different key words in the search field is always best, to try to determine if it has been done before. :)
That's pretty much what you knwo already, but i just wanted to add it.
bumping this one up instead of creating a new one.
is it possible to employ a more exhaustive forum search engine? one that searches the body of the posts as well?
another request: i'd love for the search matches to go back to the first day of posting on pof. for example. when i search on "pics" or "pictures" i'll only get results a few months back even though i'm able to manually find picture threads from previous parties from last year.
similarly when you go to ontario forums and click on images, the results page isn't very long for a forum area that has had dozens upon dozens of parties with hundreds of pics posted. having a hard time finding all i'd like to find. help?
Actually, I tried doing a thread search on a topic I know has been discussed and got an error message. I'll try again and let you know what it said.
Edit: Here it is --
Compilation Error Description: An error occurred during the compilation of a resource required to service this request. Please review the following specific error details and modify your source code appropriately.
Compiler Error Message: CS0103: The name 'readerB' does not exist in the current context

Is there a liklihood of POF employing a smarter search engine? One that would *tag* some common reduntant threads, such as "Why Nobody Replies To My Emails" or Why Dont Women Want a NICE guy?...something that would recognize the thread, and automatically redirect to the forum pages where there are already postings on the subject?
