17-1 in their last 18 games...... 13 straight road wins (Actually got to see win #1 of their streak on 1/3 against the Blazers).
They are 43-11 (best record in the West). They have already thumped Detroit by 37 and Miami by 36.
Is this team ready to push San Antonio out of the way?
Posted: 2/24/2006 5:43:49 AM
Ready? Yes....they have always been ready. The question should be are they going to be able to push San Antonio out of the way. They aren't afraid of San Antonio, and never have been. But they are better equipped to finally jump that hurdle.....unfortunately, it looks like it will be in the second round again.....the NBA playoff bracket SUCKS!!!!! By the way, it is 13 straight HOME wins, not road wins....their last loss was on the road.

Detroit's record is better than Dallas...& in a 7 game series...Detroit would kill them

~finally someone posts something about the NBA...thank you!...a pistons fan and not just because mr. wallace is the hottest guy in the game;)....

^^^Ben or Rasheed????? Just kidding....
Uh, dude....a 7 game series between Dallas and Detroit would be great, and I want to see it...but let's not be going overboard on the killing them part. Everyone said LA was going to kill Detroit....didn't happen. And Detroit has one more win and two less losses, which comes out to what, a game and half difference??
I also seem to remember everyone saying USC was going to destroy UT....Seattle was going to win the Super Bowl....the Canadians would win the Olympic Gold in hockey...Duke was unbeatable this year...do I need to go on?

The Mavericks are sweet just like the Spurs and Pistons. However, they fall short on the defensive end. Their best defensive player is Josh Howard, amazing pick by Cuban and Co. Against either the Spurs or Pistons who would Howard shut down Ginobili or Prince? The Spurs are an easier team to contain because they typically only have 3 scorers in the starting five while Detroit has 4. The Mavericks may be able to win one tough series against either San Antonio or Phoenix, but the lack of Defense will catch up to them in the next series. I truly feel for the mainstay Dallas fans because this team is very similar to the consistent failure of the Kings when they were successful. Always close, but no cigar in the end. However, Cuban has seen the errors of his ways and the young players actually have defense in their game and continue to get better with the coach of the year candidate Avery Johnson.

In the past, I would agree with the defense falling short argument, and this year's defensive effort has yet to be playoff tested....yet, this year's team is winning because if it's defense and because of better shot selection....opponent's shooting average and points per game are down, Dallas' shooting average is up and shots per game down....and their best defensive player is Adrian Griffin, not Josh....he's good, but not the best on the team yet. Plus, we do have the deepest bench in the NBA....every coach has pretty much said that already. But, again, it all happens in the playoffs....can't wait to see what happens.

Sorry about the misprint... It was 13 home wins..
Now, as for Detroit "killing" Dallas in a 7 game series, they didn't show much promise of that in their 1st meeting when they got trounced 119-82.
San Antonio is more of a threat to Dallas than Detroit. They have that defense that can stop you. They have Duncan who can rebound the crap out of the ball, while Ginobli and Parker can give you some points.
I still think Dallas needs to work on the defense a little, but they would be better than 44-9 if they played in the Eastern Conference. That goes for San Antonio, too. The East is still the weaker conference overall.
Posted: 2/24/2006 1:41:42 PM
Don't talk that much trash on the East. Yes, it is the weaker conference, but 8 of the Spurs 12 losses are to Eastern conference opponents and the Mavericks lost to the NY Knicks, enough said. All teams have their bad games and I doubt the Mavericks would be any better in the East. As for the early season loss to Dallas if we held that against the Pistons then I guess the Mighty Utah Jazz would sweep us in a 7 game series because we are 0-2 against them. Playoff basketball is a different beast one that the Mavericks have yet to master like the Spurs and Pistons. When they make it to the NBA finals, we can discuss something relevant like a 7 game series with Detroit.

Dallas and the NBA Finals is just as much of a possibility as it is with San Antonio.
You forget that Avery Johnson was still trying to un-tie the knots that Don Nelson left for him at the end of last season. Don Nelson's teams had no defense whatsoever. It was basically the first team to 110-120 points wins. Avery was still able to win a playoff series with that bad D. I would imagine that he could take that much farther.
The personel changes have gone way beyond the bench.. They made the right move by dumping Shawn Bradley (who was posterized by McGrady in last year's opening playoff round. Who could ever forget that?) They dropped Alan Henderson, and have been able to provide more depth with the emergence of Josh Howard/Devin Harris. Keith Van Horn isn't what he used to be, but he can still provide some help out there. Jerry Stackhouse was coming off the bench for a while as well.
Last year's postseason run was done with Don Nelson's team. This year, it's all Avery Johnson (And don't forget where he has learned... He did play for Greg Poppovich in San Antonio for a while).
As for the East, I give you San Antonio's struggles against them. But that 1 loss to New York in mid-january was only 1 minor blemish... Other than that 1 loss, they are 17-2 against the other conference (Those losses being: Philadelphia - Nov. 9th, Milwaukee - Nov. 29th).
Dallas is 21-3 in 2006, while Detroit is 7-3 in the month of February, and 20-5 in 2006..... Both teams are very, very good. I won't be surprised to see them in the Finals. It's just the matchup that has me wondered about Detroit. I know they still have the majority of their championship team 2 years ago, but they've had 2 cracks at Dallas this year (1 in the pre-season) and they haven't showed me that they can take them if it happened to be a 7 game series. It's a different story with San Antonio, whom Detroit had 2 convincing wins Against.
It'll be interesting to see, but this Dallas team is 2-3 times more dangerous than last years team because of the defense.

No chance for Dallas to be a top western contender. First there are Spurs, who even if they dont play a beautifull baskeball game like Dallas, they are the top team, and in playoffs they go crazy. Second Phoenix is also better than Dallas, they just had a lot of injuries. Dallas is an attacking team that play good basketball, but no good enough for championship (remember Kings from 2001-2003 same thing, good basketball, but not enough for ring). They need major improvments in defse, which would mean change in team - which would also mean a change in players- which will than mean totally different game :)
So if you are a Dallas fan you should enjoy the game, but not expect the ring.

Have you seen the defense lately?
Rebounds per game - 5th (42.55)
Opp. Rebounds per game - 28th (39.18)
Reb. differential - 3rd (+ 3.37)
Blocks per game - 4th (6.05)
Opp. Blocks per game - 15th (4.87)
Blk differential - 7th (+1.18)
Steals per game - 5th (7.59)
Opp. Steals per game - 19th (6.70)
Stl differential - 6th (+0.88)
28 - 5 when scoring 100+ points (and you know the capabilities of their offense there since they have gone over 100 in 33 of the 54 games played).
5 - 8 when the opponents score over 100 points a game (They are 5th in the league in winning % when they do give up 100+ points a game, which compliments their offense).
The offense is great already, but now the defense is kicking in.... That weapon has now become a double-edged sword.
I can guarantee you that the Mavericks had no such numbers with Shawn Bradley in center, and with Nelson heading up the team. With the change of management comes the change of fortune if they get the right guy.
Avery Johnson is 59-13 since taking over..... I think they found that guy who can get them past their normal (This day and age, normal is the 2nd round of the playoffs).
Posted: 2/25/2006 1:00:53 PM
They do not give up!
Down by 24 (86 - 62) with 5:00 left in the 3rd, it looks impossible. Down by 17 with 7:30 - 8:00 left, it looks pretty grim.
But they came back with 6 3-pointers in the 4th, tied the game, forced OT, and won on Dirk's jumper with 1.0 left.
Mavericks win! 2nd largest comeback in franchise history. This team's worth keeping tabs on, folks. They are now 18-1 in their last 19 games. That's about as good as you're going to be without being perfect.

Dallas is MUCH better equipped for defense... and we still have 30 more games of Avery's Defensive Discipleship to help them get ready for the playoffs...
People are also forgetting about Doip... who is averaging 5 or 6 blocks every 48 minutes!
Now that Diop is starting, we are much better defensively because Dampier can come in off the bench in the 2nd quarter, when the other team is resting their starters, and match up much better against their second team than their first...
So who knows what will happen.
I'm not predicting a ring... but... it's be nice just to shut farking asshold Barkley up.
GOD I hate that man!

There is no doubt that the Pistons are going to Dominate in the east but I would love to see Dallas or Pheonix take the west. The Mavericks are a great team to watch and maybe the momentum of NASH and his MVP status may help the Suns go the distance. I just don't see anyone shutting down Ben Wallace and if the Pistons can put the points on the board like they did in game 1 last night its Pistons Season Baby !
I agree Keep the NBA threads coming ! Love to watch Jason Terry so here's a thumbs up for the thread and the Mav's
Posted: 5/9/2006 12:44:19 PM
Cuban should not have let Nash go. Period. That is with out a doubt his biggest folly to date. That and that reality/ game show he did.

Well obvi Howard is the great pick , shuttign down Spurrs fun n gun offence

here it is 2011 the mavs in the playoffs again 11 years in row ive lost count. does not mean anything unless they go all the way. how far will they get with these teams, who knows but it would nice to have another local team in the finals.
then if they dont at least we can say WE SWEPT THE LAKERS IN THE PLAYOFFS
Posted: 5/15/2011 6:59:55 AM
Interesting that this thread was bumped from '06, because I worry that Dallas may be looking at the same fate in 2011. Only this time, instead of having to deal with one guy from Miami who can regularly get to the line by dropping his head and barreling towards the rim, they have to deal with two.

another texas team in a championship series now all we need is the cowboys in the superbowl this football season, if there is one. will be an amazing storyline how the mavs have made the playoffs for so many years in a row if they can be the heat. the '06 finals with the heat and how there are only 2 players left from that mavs team, the mavericks have rebuilt well.
mavs made it thru okc with ease. bring on the lebron james although he cant be to bad of a guy he is a dallas cowboy fan.
BEAT THE HEAT
oh and how about another texan in the white house?
Posted: 5/28/2011 8:33:26 AM
Hopefully they will win the whole shebang.
Followed them since the Iuzzolino, harper, Mashburn days.
Texan in the white house, not if he/she is anything like the last one, for the worlds sake lol.

I went to a NJ Nets game and saw ..KIDD, Jackson, and Mashburn when they were together.
Posted: 6/5/2011 6:50:54 AM
oh we did have the super bowl here, that counts.
frank our gov had announced he would consider running for president.
back in the 90's when we got the 3 j's we really thought we were going places and all it led to was one of the worst teams ever in the nba.
thursday nights game being a work night makes it ackward and then playing again tonight im gonna be tired tomorrow. one of the greatest comebacks in finals history, what a great game.
not taking anything away from maimi home crowds but its a little creepy when everybody dons white, almost like a prison crowd.
the mavericks have tied the series up and consider the heat have 3 superstars and the mavs have one. now they are home for 3 games
BEAT THE HEEEAAATTT
