yes and quickly

I don't think it would be fair to make its use mandatory.

Yes.

In another thread I refered to an article where the potential was calculate at over $8 billion a year. Not to mention easing prison crowding, giving out justice system some more time to focus on worse crimes, and preventing many of our citizens from losing their civil rights by smoking/possessing pot.

how come all these threads only ask whether or not something should be done, but aren't about how to do it? is it because we are latent activists waiting for legalized weed to motivate us into a frenzy of action?

The thing about easing prison crowding, I agree, it wouldn't be as bad in a crowded prison if they were stoned.

What a funny thread... and most eloquent illustration between Canada and those in the U.S. It's funny. For most intents and purposes Marijuana has been dicriminalized in Canada for years. Cops go after big growers. I can't remember the last time I heard of anyone being busted for possession. And even if you are, it's like a speeding ticket... just without the demerits. The American "war on drugs" has been just as successful as it "war on terror" will be: it will only serve to drive things underground, create a new need, and prevent any meaningful dialogue or solutions from being developed. You gotta look at causes, and work on those.

Marijuana is our country's number one cash crop for one reason, a black market. It should be decriminalized if nothing else.

Certainly decriminalized.

It's hysterical how we got lectured by the USA on how dangerous grass was, especially given the popularity of weapons in the USA.

We would allow police forces to concentrate on real problems, remove billions from the hands of criminals, and control the quality and safety of the product to the user. The use of hemp related products could provide a bonanza to our agricultural sector. Ever wear a hemp shirt ? The thing will outlast you on this planet.

Not to mention raising the taste in music.....

I agree except I don't think the agricultural sector would switch to bananas. That is a tropical crop and we just don't have the climate for it here.

I agree it should be legalized, but only when there is a rapid way to detect it , it ones system, like a breathalizer impared is impared, would not want to have them driving on the street.

They generally don't drive on the street, in my experience. I would be happy if only they could.

SENATE SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON ILLEGAL DRUGS
CANNABIS : SUMMARY REPORT

CHAPTER 8 - DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF CANNABIS
The Committee feels it is quite likely that cannabis makes users more cautious, partly because they are aware of their deficiencies and compensate by reducing speed and taking fewer risks. However,because what we are dealing with is no longer the consequences on the users themselves,but the possible consequences of their behaviour on others,the Committee feels that it is important to opt for the greatest possible caution with respect to the issue of driving under the influence of cannabis.
Given what we have seen,we conclude the following:

Between 5% and 12% of drivers may drive under the influence of cannabis; this percentage increases to over 20% for young men under 25 years of age;
Cannabis alone,particularly in low doses,has little effect on the skills involved in automobile driving. Cannabis leads to a more cautious style of driving. However it has a negative impact on decision time and trajectory. This in itself does not mean that drivers under the influence of cannabis represent a traffic safety risk;
A significant percentage of impaired drivers test positive for cannabis and alcohol together. The effects of cannabis when combined with alcohol are more significant than is the case for alcohol alone;

Hemp will not be legalized as long as there are Big ProFit$ being made by it's prohibition.
Such as Drug Companies.

On September 6, 1988, the Drug Enforcement Administration's Chief Administrative Law Judge, Francis L. Young, ruled: "Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man," and asked the Drug Enforcement Administration to reschedule it. The DEA refused, keeping it as a Schedule I drug, which they say "has no known medical use"! Thousands of studies have been done all over the world, documenting the medical use of MARIJUANA (England, Spain, Hungary, Holland, and the U.S., just to name a few). No one has ever died from MARIJUANA in over 6,000 years of recorded history... unless they were shot by a COP!

Or The Paper Industry,

CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA was the NUMBER ONE annually renewable natural resource for 80 percent of all paper, fiber, textiles and fuel, from 6,000 years ago until about 125 years ago.....
75 to 90 percent of all paper used from at least 100 AD to 1883 was made of CANNABIS/HEMP. Books, (including Bibles), money and newspapers all over the world have been mainly printed on CANNABIS/HEMP for as long as these things have existed in human history.

And lets not forget the Oil Companies and Dupont, They made it illegal in the first place, think they will give up what they have worked so hard and long to achieve?
No Way, it will happen.

Thats like asking why officials around the border states arnt doing anything about the flow of illegals into the country. They just dont want to deal with it so they wont. Besides, advocating the use of pot would be political suicide. Is it a pile of poop? Yes. How do we deal with it? We gotta wait for all the good ol' boys to retire from office, and hope the younger generations are smarter then them.

You'll just have grow it indoors.

OT: yeah, it should be legal. The DEA should be concentrating on drugs that can truely harm someones way of life, like coke and heroin. Unfortunately, trewq is right, Dupont will never allow it.....unless we start boycotting Dupont, and switch to biodiesel or hydrogen.

Legalize all drugs.

Actually I think pot is effectively legal in the US too. It's so widely available that cops don't bust you for having small amounts. It's just not worth having to fill out all the paper work. I've had friends get caught with the stuff and cops just confiscate it (and probably smoke it when they get home).

I have three reasons for thinking all drugs should be legallized. Notwithstanding that I think nobody should use them.

St. Augustine wrote that one of the qualities of a just or godly law is that it has to be enforceable. We can't keep drugs out of prisons where there are walls, razor wire, and guards, much less off the streets.

The drug trade has become more dangerous than the drugs themselves. Heroin has two primary side effects - it's addictive and causes a rash on some people. Hundreds die from overdoses every year because of the vagaries of purity. Making the trade illegal simply rewards the most ruthless with thousands of innocent victims of collateral damage.

During Prohibition, they had to close the largest elementary school in Detroit because most of the kids were showing up drunk. It's close to that now with the drug trade. When my daughter was 13 I asked her how long it would take her to buy some pot if she wanted to - about 10 minutes. When I asked her how long it would take to buy 6 beer, she had no idea, wouldn't even know how to begin. Some drug dealers will sell to kids with no qualms. But if there aren't 300% profits to be realized, there would be no interest in facing jail time for it (there is jail time possible for selling alcohol to minors).

Just yesterday a tunnel was busted going from aldergrove in B.C. into Washington State.The three men involved were said to have toiled 10 hours a day,6 days a week for a year to dig and equipt the tunnel for large movement of B.C.'s finest.This is the first 'known' tunnel between Canada and the U.S.,while some 34 tunnels have been found between Mexico and the U.S.
Special agent Rod Benson of the U.S.drug enforcement agency said "this tunnel investigation clearly shows the effort by this international drug trafficking organization to smuggle their 'poison' into the U.S. for distribution." The cost of the tunnel was estimated at one million dollars.Originally the tunnel was discovered during a cocaine smuggling investigation where cocaine was coming back into Canada.Which drug would you consider the poison?If the government took control of the distribution of pot and taxed it it would essentially take it out of the hands of these 'bad' guys much like stopping the prohibition of booze took the criminal element out of that situation.Unfortunately it would also put alot of enforcement types out of work and the money to investigate would dry up.I wonder why they are adament that this war on drugs and the demonization of pot continues while decriminalization is looked apon as the moral breakdown of society?Mmmm,let me see.

It’s quite idealistic to simply introduce Marijuana into a structural society like the US; the reputation of Marijuana carries a great deal of taboo. The problem recreational users seem to miss in their smoke cloud of ideology is that Marijuana would be highly regulated.

For a group of people that already distrust the government, it’s amusing to think that they would be as comfortable with the government regulating their stash, besides like with Tobacco you have to have a license and a permit to grow it, it would still most likely be illegal to grow your own.

Eventually big business and government would be completely be control.

I pay taxes why shouldn't pot growers/dealers?
We'd get the tax money PLUS free up the use of untold man hours per year from law enforcement....they can use these man hours to pursue worse offenses.
