where to go in Paris

I am travelling to Paris in late april for a custom motorcycle show and wanted to find out where to go to have fun. I am travelling with a couple of friends and we all would like to enjoy our trip as much as possible. I will do the normal tourist things, eiffel tower, things like that but I want to know about night life, restaurants, shows, where do all the fun people go at night? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

One of the more unusual things my friend and I did at night while in Paris was gather with some other great people we met recently (who happened to be Canadian) on the banks of the Seine.(I think we were near Notre Dame) So, if you take a walk, I'm sure you might run into some friendly people having a little informal party.

I couldn't tell you about night spots even if I knew any because they probably would have changed in the last 8 years.

anywhere is paris is special-just walk around, its very safe. left bank, on rue de seine number 34 or 35, around there is a lively cafe-le pallette-very trendy, just go anywhere -theres lots of wonderful places. the paris jazz festival might be on then, check that out-its fa, take uses and le metro, get off and browse, le marais, le bastille, i love it all.

Well it depends what you like doing, there are some interesting cemeteries, grave of Jim Morrison, Edith Piaff, Chopin, Moliere, Proust, Oscar Wilde you can look it up on the internet.
You can go check out Johnny Depps club Manray, www.manray.fr. Go to the Queen on a monday night on a Sunday you see everything gay straight whatever ,Cabaret is a restaurant, lounge, gets a little crazy late at night, make sure you are downstairs.L"etoile.
Maybe go take a look at the Max Linder cinema23 Blvd Poissonniere close to Metro Bonne Nouvelle
Also if you are very late you can take the 2 oclock Batofar, it is kind of a bus
there are some cool jazz clubs ask around, La Fontaine , Metro Colonel Fabien has Rick Maritza play everyonce in a while, wine bar La Tartie near Metro St. Paul. You know the usual cafes Les Deux Magot, Cafe Flore I would say don't plan to much explore, and just ask the locals.

Jim Morrison is buried in Père-Lachaise cemetary in Paris France. The cemetary is definitely worth a visit. It is also the cite of burial for MANY other famous people...Edith Piaf...Molière...Oscar Wilde. Visiting a cemetary might seem like an odd thing to do on a vaction but it is definitely worth the visit. Just remember to be respectful...don't sit or write anything on the graves (you'd be surprised at all the graffiti). And buy the map on the way in- You'll get lost without it. You also can't miss the Louvre. It is HUGE and is an all day event....bring good shoes. The entrance itself it a piece of art. The mona lisa is there but is smaller than I expected, encased in glass. She also has her own security guard and a rope...hard to see... but the rest of the museum is worth it.

Ahh yeah....Paris

Well, go on the city tours...they have these busses wher eyou can get a pass for a few days and hop on and hop off at many of the locations...dont take the RED busses...les cartes rouge..there is a better one..its green or yellow....take that one...u can buy the ticket right on the bus for your 3 days pass etc.....

do drink some wine in the park :)

DO go to the LA PLAGE..... its a great walk down the river with many things going on....

Walk up the stiars to Notre Dame and to L'arc d'triomphe......as fast as you can LOL just kidding...but do go there

DO order a pizza or sandwhich with a cracked egg cooked on it... croque monsieur?? something like that....

Do watch AMELIE, a french film, before you go....then go to the places u see in there...where the cafe is where the movie was shot....cool.

DO try to meet some french ppl prior to going, online etc...and meet them to get a taste of what its like to live there...otherwise you will be the eternal tourist and not likely to meet some french ppl while there...

do go to jim morrisona grave as mentioned in the other posts....the graveyard is incredible.....Chopin is there also.

Louvre...mona lisa, venus de milo....ahh yes...van gough.....

DO go ot the museum of modern art and to musee D'orsay..... great stuff....if you like picasso, theres a great picasso museum as well

DO stop at one of the many places you will see (the little shops) that sell desserts...and have some creme brule and the tarts that are stuffed with strawberries and custard... :)

DO go to the erotic museum....7 floors of sex man lol wooohoo....its not gross, a little crude but a lot of fun....located in Pigalle

DO get to know your parts of Paris before you go...... Pigalle, montmatre, Bastille...etc...that way you will find things easier

DO go to Tati, a cheap store

DO NOT buy your water from street venders...find a little shop or store and buy the water from inside...save money.....

DO learn some French...it will help.....

enjoy and relax as well...hit a club....walk Champs elysees....take a boat ride down the river....sit in the outdoor cafes and people watch.....have your portrait drwn by an artisit outside.....buy an eiffel tower monument to bring home :) go to the Eifflel tower too :)
go to Sacred Heart :)
theres so much...just walk off the beaten path.....please....and find your own fun!

also....if you like the musicians you hear in the subways or on the streets..give them money....if u are not interested in giving them money, dont appear to enjoy them :)

be prepared to see homeless women and children begging all over....

Have fun!! :) and do all the research you can before you go!!

Can anybody reccomend a hotel?

I stayed in a "broom closet" in a very nice hotel on the street Rue des Ecoles (not sure about the "des" part) It was situated right between the Pantheon, and Notre Dame. It was a great location, the desk clerk I happened to talk to was a nice guy, and the hotel was genuinely nice.

I say "broom closet" because that is what my room was called on the evacuation plan. It had a single bed, a toilet, and a sink--everything I needed.(especially because every other hotel in the area was full at the time, and I needed a room that night. Oh, yeah, there was a shower and sauna in the basement.

paris is such a wonderful city...my favorite ! buy a "carnet" which is a packet of 10 subway tickets you buy at a reduced rate. a "museum pass" if your into that gets you into the front of the line at some of the worlds greatest museums (art and sculpture are the best). take the 50 minute train ride south to the cathedral at "chatre". have a great time !

The Louvre is not a night spot, but its definitely worth the visit for your touristy things to do during the day. Of course there is the Mona Lisa, but what I found most remarkable are the galleries of French/Italian Renaissance sculptures. Its just amazing to see these 3-dimensional poses of stone people doing everything from just standing there, engaged in some battle, or romantically embraced. Then there are full horses "frozen" in marble as well. I did not believe such types of intricate sculpture was possible until I saw it. It's very beautiful.

Yes, to all of the above, but I'll give you a tip where NOT to go...
(that is unless you like being freaked out!)

Don't do the Tours of the Catacombs! It is a not a tour, but merely you alone descending a windy rickety staircase into complete darkness where all you hear is the drip drip drip of condensation coming off the walls in the narrow pathways. Not to mention I took a pic where it appeared I was not alone... Creepy!

I don't know if it was mentioned yet or not, but you must go to Notre Dame and climb all the the way up to the top. It is worth the time (& effort!) as the views from there are incredible, plus you get to hang with the gargoyles!

Montmarte is where you'll find all the Moulin Rouge/Follies type of action, but you'll probably have the most fun in the Latin Quarter. There are tons of cool places to hang out there, but nothing really gets going til after midnight.

Another fun spot is embarrasingly enough, Disneyland. You can take the train all the way out there, and if you buy the pass for the Studios you get free entry to the Disney Park after 6pm.

Ayez une bonne temps!

I went under, into the Catacombes years ago. There were many in our "tour" and it was interesting/sad to see the bones separated and organized by part--skulls in one section, tibia in another... Don't go if you're claustrophobic or if you're wearing good shoes.

I realize this thread is old, but I'm sure other POFers will be travelling to Europe this summer.

I loved "La Defense" area with its new, modern sculpture and buildings--total change from the older, historic buildings in the central region.

Montmartre is my favourite part of Paris, with its interesting shops, windy streets and wonderful views.

If you are planning on going to the Louvre.. and you would be silly not to.
then try and go in the evening on the days it's open late. i believe Wednesday it's open until like 10pm. Most tourists groups go during the day so it's not nearly as crazy then.

Do of course see all the typical tourists sites, they are defintely worth a visit. The eiffel tower offers amazing views and if you are up to it you can climb up to the first two floors for a mere 3euros. (but then you gotta fork it out to get to the very top)
it has a lightshow at 11pm and at midnight. Dont go too late or you wont be able to get to the top as they close it down, otherwise it's worth going by sunset when you can view everything from both day and night perspective.

It's been a while, but, I'm with above poster. The Louvre is an awesome place, and truly the best museum in the world, and I've been to many. Take more than a day, lol, I could literally spend weeks in there.

Have lunch at Georges Cinq, but don't forget to polish up that American Express platinum prior to your arrival.

I wish Star Trek "beaming" were available, I hate flying.

Cheers!

I am going in March. Has anyone been to the Museum de Armees? Or to the sewers? We are WWII history buffs so thought these would be good trips for us specifically as well as the Catacombs.

Also looking for a flea market. Does anyone have any other ideas? Not interested in the night life.

Anywhere in Paris is good. In 05 I was in the western part of Paris where the modern part of it is and it was at the Victor Hugo Hotel (I think it was called) It is a really nice place no matter where you are at. The people are GREAT there and it is a thrill to go there. Right from the airport which is beautiful in itself ,to the cities, the way it is organized, to the people, it's a great thrill always in Paris.

The Louvre is a great museum (especially their Egyptian collection), but I find it a boring gallery. Musee D'Orsay is great if you like impressionist art - they have some great works - and the Art Nouvelle collection is absolutely wonderful. My favourite is still the Pompidou Centre, but I love modern art - and their Bahaus collection is mind-blowing. The Picasso museum is disappointing - I'm not a big fan to start with, but even if I were I would have been disappointed with the narrow collection.

Oh - and Paris has some other stuff too. I seem to remember that the food was ok.

I liked the catacombs, but that's just me. I also visited the museum 'de armee' as that is the type of thing I am interested in.
The standard tourists spots are all they claim to be. Get to the E tower in the evening, when they blink the lites, like for 10 minutes every hour. It's very pretty. I did not stand in the line to ride to the top.
Ask your cab driver to take you to the street artists on the hill.
And then there is an area that has lots of Greek food spots on some back streets that were fun to shop and walk. Can't remember the name of the streets.
The 'flea markets' were not what we expected. They were predominently stuff from China. What a let down. We went prepared to ship goodies home. Found zip, nada.

The Louvre personnel gave lousy directions throu their own building. But getting past that, all was well. Don't wait until you are exhausted to attempt to leave. It takes forever to find the exit.
Take your heels and a tie as the M Rouge, Lido, and Crazy Horse are formal.
Hold hands. It is a romantic city and you see loads of couples stopping on the sidewalks to kiss.
Don't be surprised to see people carrying bread in their backpacks, back pockets, in bags, etc... They live by the bread!
PS: thou the internet sources told us that the Euro was $1.31 compared to US $1.00; that was NOT true. It was Euro $1.71 to US $1.00 plus the $24 Euro to change monies. RRRR....
May go to Canada next.

There is a small quaint town outside of Paris called Charte' which is a lovely place and really shows the real french culture. It also has a really interesting gothic church to tour. The little towns away from Paris were the ones that I remember most as I thought Paris was like New York City and too crowded.
