| Is sci fi fantasy and horror more a guy thing or the women out there hiding Posted: 3/12/2006 6:32:35 PM | | I don't see it in many profiles. books, movies, and PC gaming. I also don't see any really pretty girls into it. thats what I'm missing all my girlfriends are into lifetime channel, self help books, and music. da.mm earphones they only come off during sex. real annoying. | |

| Is sci fi fantasy and horror more a guy thing or the women out there hiding Posted: 3/12/2006 7:35:27 PM | If it's a guy thing, I'm in trouble.
I don't care for drama .. once in a blue moon, and it has to be something amazingly special. I have never in my life opened a self help book, and probably will never. As for lifetime channel, I wasn't aware there was one, lol.
I'm a horror fanatic, I watch every horror movie that comes out, waiting for one that will actually be frightening, but having a great time searching ;) Saw 2 is a new personal favorite :D Not only the movies, but my books as well ... Steven King being my hero, of course .. but also John Saul, Dean Koontz and others.
PC Gaming, you betcha .. that and the PS2 .. but I'm pretty picky in my selection of games, lol.
So no, it's not a guy thing.

| Is sci fi fantasy and horror more a guy thing or the women out there hiding Posted: 3/12/2006 7:38:25 PM | | I loved the Stainless Steel Rat series by Harry Harrison and used to read Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury. I guess I grew out of reading sci-fi, but I still like Stephen King and any other good horror writers I come across. I also like the occasional self-help book and I love music. But I hate the Lifetime channel; seems like someone's always getting beaten, stalked, or killed there. | |

I love horror flicks..even the really bad ones..geez ,I own dvds of the Saw,13 Ghosts,Darkness Falls,FearDotCom,Ghost Ship,Jeepers Creepers (1 and 2),etc... I like King's books better than the movies made of them... Read most Anne Rice novels, and have an autographed Dean Koontz novel.

| Is sci fi fantasy and horror more a guy thing or the women out there hiding Posted: 3/12/2006 7:49:27 PM | Hoping there's going to be a 3rd, since they nicely left an opening for one with Amanda taking over ... lol. (EDIT: I just checked ... it's in preproduction ... YAY! Will be released Oct. 27th this year)
I own all the same DVD's, lol ... I make a point of picking up every one that comes out for my library. A few I wish I hadn't! (The Village, The Grudge, Dark Water) I'm so sorry I own those, they were awful.
Yup, his books are always better ... I make a point of reading the book before I watch the movie, just for comparison.
I also love Anne Rice, both the Vampire Chronicles and the Mayfair Witches. I just finished Blood Canticle, that was so cool, seeing her integrate the two chronicles into one book!

| Is sci fi fantasy and horror more a guy thing or the women out there hiding Posted: 3/12/2006 7:54:44 PM | Definitely NOT a guy thing. I absolutely LOVE video games such as the Grand Theft Auto series, America's Army, Medal of Honor, Battlefield 1942, Max Payne (both), F.E.A.R., etc.
And yes, I absolutely LOVE movies, be them horror, sci-fi/fantasy, war, western, action, comedy, classic, drama, family, etc etc.
P.S... I'm the best sniper around (video game wise *angelic look*).

In the century and society Lestat and Armand, even Louis, were from, men expressing love for men openly was common practice. What one person sees as gay innuendo, others see as them acting in the manner to which their society taught them was perfectly normal.

| Is sci fi fantasy and horror more a guy thing or the women out there hiding Posted: 3/12/2006 10:45:44 PM | gee i didn't even know saw3 was out yet. i've got 1 & 2. It's cool to see women that enjoy sci-fi. I have the village, the grudge and dark water too. have you seen the ring 1 &2. they are ok. i know that saw2 was better than 1. i bet 3 is good.
i don't think there are as many women into sci-fi as men. a lot of the women i know are into drama and the family channel. stuff like the gilmore girls and beautiful people.

gee i didn't even know saw3 was out yet.
Not yet .. it's in pre-production .. will be out October 2th, 2006.
The Ring 1 was excellent ..definate keeper. The Ring 2 was worth seeing once .. I'll never watch it again. They tried too hard to rake off financially from the success of the first one, and failed miserably.
You want to know what's freaky? When your phone rings IMMEDIATELY after watching The Ring 1 ... the movie didn't scare me but the phone ringing almost made me hit the ceiling lol.

| Is sci fi fantasy and horror more a guy thing or the women out there hiding Posted: 3/13/2006 12:27:45 AM | Personally, I'd rather have needles stuck under my nails than read a self-help book or watch Lifetime. Pardon me while I cough up a hairball.
Now it also depends on the type of horror and SF you're talking about. There's a ton of pulp out there, and while I know I'm not making any fans in this thread, I'm going to say that Stephen King has done some decent writing, but that his particular brand of horror is a bit stale and sensationalist. I much prefer Angela Carter, Joyce Carol Oates, and Annie Proulx. None of them wrote in-your-face horror, but if you get the subtleties in their stories, you'll be struck by the terrible implications. I just think that psychological horror is a lor scarrier than blood and gore. Take as an example James' "The Turn of the Screw" - possibly the best horror story ever written, but so butchered by half-as*ed high-school lessons.
I enjoyed the concept of SAW 1, but I was disappointed by the sequel - I felt it just rehashed a theme which happened to be successful. "Dark Water" was pretty, well, watered-down. "The Village" was visually stunning and had some great acting. But I have to say that "The Grudge" was a good rendition of Japanese horror, tailored for a Western audience. I haven't seen the original, but I heard it was amazing.
As far as SF goes, I find that there are piles and piles of crap out there. I like the classics, like Bradbury, Asimov, Van Vogt, Herbert, although I think my favorite has to be Octavia Butler.

No woman ever games or watches anything other than chick flicks.
Men - you are being fooled.
Trust me on this. They are all lying.
ArchDemon,
Speaking the truth.
PS: ask them what a flash-bang is, and make sure to note it cannot be their last date.
You will see. | |
