I had a stuffed Mickey mouse toy, I would have been about 6 years old, I don't know if this type of toy had a particular name but this one had a rubber face, in Woolworths in Birmingham town centre they had black monkeys with the same type of faces hung up from some chrome metal work around the toy area. We left Birmingham when I was 7 or 8 years old the toy didn't go with us for some reason, a couple of years later I went back to the house which was due for demolition but there was no sign of Mickey. (Just been searching the web to see if I can find any mention of this style of doll but no good so far.)
In Birmingham's New Street (our main railway station) there was and still is a guy selling Jacket potatoes, the smell of them always takes me back to a winters evening wrapped up in a coat with scarf the pigeons flying around and Christmas decorations all around. Mick

| Childhood toys and memoriezs. Posted: 3/22/2006 2:41:17 AM | My stepdad once made me a box car, All the other kids made them out of old pram wheels & scrap peices of wood. For weeks my dad was in the shed making this surprise present for me, i had no idea what it was & remember thinking my dad was such a cheapskate & other kids had presents bought for them. Anyway, my birthday had arrived & there was this box car.... Modelled on my dads car at the time, a black & gold special edition escort estate... He went out & bought brand new wheels, it had curved side panels with gold go-faster stripes down it & a number plate on the back with my name on, It was the flashest box car in the area!! God, how the other kids hated me...didnt take long to trash it though! | |

| Childhood toys and memoriezs. Posted: 3/22/2006 3:03:15 AM | I have two toys I remember particularly fondly
The first is a teddy bear, but not just any old teddy bear - it was a panda. My dad used to make up stories about this panda - I took it to bed with me every night, and even as a adult, if I felt low, or ill I'd cuddle up with this panda.
The other was a doll with a porcelain head and a soft body. It was a baby doll and it was the ugliest thing you've ever seen.
Neither of these toys is anywhere to be seen now. I do know what happened to them. The unsentimental, practical side of somebody rubs off after a while, and they got thrown out in one of our major decluttering sessions.
