I've recently gotten into watching foreign films..
I rent one every couple of weeks now.
I've seen the Oscar Nominated ones like "Life is Beautiful","Amelie","Run,Lola,Run" and "Talk to Her"(Still need to see "Motorcycle Diaries")

But I've found a few lesser known gems, like "The Way Home"and "Not One Less"

Anyone else enjoy foreign films, and which ones would you recommend seeing?

Swept Away (NOT the Madonna version; Italian)
The Vanishing (Dutch)

I'll try to come up with more...(these are all older films)

I just now watched an Afghanistani/French collaboration ,called "Osama",that dealt with the injustice to women by the Taliban.
Very interesting film.

"City of God" I think that's the name of the movie. It's about Brazilian kids in street gangs. The actors were untrained kids from the street. It is probably the best movie I have ever seen. It was amazing...just perfect. It's not a happy movie obviously, but everyone should definitely see it.

@mcgyver..
No..I really don't have a favourite country for the films.

There's an old one called "Two Women" w/ Sophia Loren in it that I'd like to find.
She won her Oscar for that one.I think it was made in the early 60's.

I rented an interesting French film called 'Le Dernier Combat'. Unusual in that it was able to tell a story very well without using any dialog. A bonus is it didn't require dubbing.

City Of Lost Children's a big favorite of mine!

When I first saw the trailer years ago I assumed it was one of Terry Gilliam's baroque creations, but t'ain't so...and the French filmmakers did a fine job. A very cool creepy/techno/fairy/SF type tale, and I got the DVD real quick.

I recommend just about anything by the Japanese animation guru Hayao Miyazake. For me, some of his films (Princess Mononoke comes right to mind) are a bit heavy handed and preachy in the eco-terrorist mindset, but stuff like My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and my own top fav, Porco Rosso, hit on all cylinders. Okay, it's animated...but the stories, even in a 'kid' type movie like Totoro, definitely are geared toward adult sensibilities and are engaging and entertaining without hitting you repeatedly with the Moron Hammer that too many American flicks use.

Paul Verhoeven's 'Soldier Of Orange' is a good account of Holland under German occupation, even if I can't speak Dutch and have to use the English subtitles. One of Rutger Hauer's earlier pics, but very good.

Most of Jackie Chan's Hong Kong movies are fun if you like action, especially since they're pretty much exclusively full of real stunts; no blue screen or fakes...

What else...oh yeah, hard to go wrong with the original 'La Femme Nikita,' which is better than its pretty good Bridget Fonda remake 'Point Of No Return.'

I have been meaning to look into Kurasawa's films...'The Seven Samurai' looks like it deserves its reputation and following, I'll probably download it and eventually pick up the Criterion DVD, but his others look good too...

Ah yes...edit for forgetting one of the funniest comedies you could see: 'Johnny Stecchino,' starring Roberto Benigni. He plays a hapless clown roped into being a double for an Italian mobster, as they're identical in appearance. Roberto ROCKS!

mu2..thanks for reminding me about'Seven Samurai'..that's a must-see!

And,a friend of mine recommended Miyazake,so I'll check that out, too.
I rented an oldie not too long ago, called "M"..
It was a german film from around 1940,and was the film debut of Peter Lorre..
it was quite good!

The Vengeance Trilogy: Directed by Chan Wook Park, the 2nd film in the trilogy (called Oldboy) is being remade into an american version (yuck, its gonna bite)

Three Extremes

Kamikaze Girls

Also check out a Belgian thriller called Trouble

I just watched 'The Barbarian Invasions' today...
Awesome movie!!!
I highly recommend it.
Even though,technically for me,it's not really foreign,as it's a French-Canadian film.
It did win Best Foreign Film Oscar in 2003.

City of God is a truly amazing film !! Just freaking awe inspiring at every level. And based on a true story too. You will have to watch it several times to get a handle on all the characters.

Thanks..I'll look for that one,as well.
I did get to see "Two Women" about 3 weeks ago,and it is a fabulous movie!
Also ,bought "Motorcycle Diaries"...amazing!
I saw a French-Croation film 3 days ago called "No Mans' Land",about the Serb-Croat war,and the absurdities of war in general.Another really great film!

Khuddar is a great Hindi action movie. (1994 version)

Das Untergang (Titled, "Downfall" for American version) is a really hardcore look at the last 13 days of Hitler's life. Bruno Ganz (Plays hitler) should've won an Oscar.

If you like Roberto Begnini, check out "Johnny Stecchino".

Two thumbs up for "City of Lost Children". Ron Perlman was great as the lead.

"Le Pacte des Loups" (Brotherhood of the Wolf) was another French film that I found amazing. It is one of the few well acted, action movies that I have seen. The fight scene choreography had a style similar to that of Jon Woo.

"Leon" is yet another French film that is extremely difficult not to like. It's got action, drama, love, and more. It's directed by Luc Besson who also directed "The Fifth Element". The edited version of this movie is more common here in the states and it is called "The Professional".

I have seen "Brotherhood of the Wolf",dubbed in English, but it was a good film!

Colin, thanks for the tip about "Das Untergang".I'd probably find that very interesting.
That made me recall the first foreign film I ever watched..'Das Boot'..a remarkable movie!

I STILL can't get "City of Lost Children"!The joys of living in a small town..

Recently bought "Run,Lola,Run",and an Ingmar Bergman film called "Saraband".
Liked both of those, although "Saraband" did drag a bit at times.

Hey leafslady,

Run Lola Run was great! I like how they told the same story three different ways with different endings.

Another film that kinda uses that style is "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not." It's a french film with Audrey Tautou (the girl from Amelie). The first half of the movie is told from her perspective and the second half is the same story told from HIS perspective. They saw things COMPLETELY different :-)

Luna e l'altra - It's an Italian movie about a woman whose shadow escapes and leads the life she's afraid to.
Betty Blue - French - really moving, about a young couple, the woman goes insane.
All About My Mother - Spanish.
Italian for Beginners - I'm not sure if it's Dutch or Belgian.
Il Cinema Paradiso - Italian.
