Do you believe the Herpes statistics?Page 1 of 4    (1, 2, 3, 4)
I have a huge fear of this disease and have tried researching it a lot, with a lot of conflicting info. Some studies show so many people have it and don't know it, and are very contagious without symptoms...others say first time symptoms are so severe you can't possibly miss them and that without outbreaks risk of transmission is low.

What do you believe?
And can we ever really fully protect ourselves without leading a life of celibacy?

I believe it is rampant. And yes it is scary. That is why you really want to be sure who you are with. One nighters are like russian roulette. You really should trust the person and know them for a while before engaging in sex. You just never know. The other thing is the one's they call carriers. They have it but it never shows and they do not know that they are passing it on to others. Here is what else, even if you are wearing a condom you can get it. It happens through skin flaking so if you are just rubbing your general genital areas together you can get it.

ha, thanks for reinforcing my fear, was sort of hoping for some reassurance, lol. What i don't get is if it's so rampant why aren't blood tests more readily available and made a standard in std screening? Most docs i have talked to say they pretty much only test by taking a swab from an active lesion

Good question. It is my opinion that they kinda feel like if you are someone who is taking part in that kind of sexual activity or that frequent I should say that well that is your problem. I am not saying I agree with it, I just don't think they care. The doctor you are seeing is not actively having sex with anyone but his/her wife or husband. they know the statistics and don't screw around because of it.

I took the test one time and ran into that same deal. Matter of fact they wanted to go ahead and treat me like I had it. I was very upset and emotional. I searched myself to find the tests and had to tell them what the names were. Turned out to be a pimple. Gross but man was I relieved. Since then I decided I ain't screwing around. It was during that time when I was waiting for the results (which take about 10 days depending where you live in relation to the lab where they send the test to.) that I learned about all of the stats on the net. It truly is scary. Put it this way they say if you have had sex with 5 different people than you have had sex with someone who has it.

Think about it......

haha, the problem is...how do ya know if he is herpe free? :P Give people the damn tests, just like HIV tests, then perhaps we could get more control over this disease and I won't stress that maybe i have it from like years ago and don't know it and it could turn up at any moment!

Or maybe, we need to just accept it....eliminate the stigma around it, as it's not a dangerous disease really, just kinda icky and a pain in the ass

Hmmm i think people are scared to even respond to this thread!
leading a life of celibacy?

I'm going the celibacy route... that's the good news. The bad news, is that it's not by choice.

This has been done before on here. Some POF people even was telling how they had it, and what they went threw. Look for that and you might find the info you need. I think they asked if you would date anyone with it, and I said no, and it made them mad as a snake and ready to bite. Find that and you will have your info. Good luck.

I was sorta dating this one girl awhile back that had herpes. (Or at least, she didn't know if she had it or not.)

We never had any sexual contact, and she got really angry when I got nervous about the prospect of sex with her for that very reason.

Suffice it to say, that didn't work out.

That's what this girl was saying. She KNEW that her ex-boyfriend had it, and she kept getting tested for it... and the tests kept turning up negative.

But for whatever reason she thought she might have it despite what the tests said. Nothing quite ends a romantic mood like the mention of an STD.

Anyone who has ever had a cold sore technically has herpes....but it is of a different strain of the virus...just don't kiss anyone/ let anyone perform oral on you if they have a blister or lesion...likewise, inspect his pecker and sac before he has 'relations' with you..use a condom etc. and you should be O.K. But, mostly, if you have sex with someone, try to know about them and be upfront about such things; chances are they have similar concerns and will appreciate honesty! Hope this helps ya'

I am so disappointed to hear such negative attitudes about stuff like this. Hopefully people will become more educated and lighten up.

First off, how many people suffer from cold sores? Big ugly facial sores that are exposed to the public and what...that's totally acceptable right? Where do you think herpes come from? What's on the face is the same below the waist!!!!!!

Most of the time people who have it down below came from some one's lips on the face...however North can go South but South doesn't go north....HSV2 doesn't like it cold so doesn't live on the lips so you are relatively safe with oral, not getting it on your face from down below so feel free to tease!

Yes there is a possibility to spread it without a outbreak, but I have friends...she has had it many years, have been given the gift that keeps on giving, yet her partner of 11 years hasn't got it yet and they have bare raw sex, always have always will.... another girlfriend has had it 20 years married 8 years, two children and nothing...and they have great sex! A male friend has it, did pass it once because he didn't know he had it!

1 out 5 people have the virus. If you think you haven't been with someone who has it, or a form of, you are sadly mistaken!!! If you think you can't get it because your partner is "clean" wrong! And YES! Most people who have Herpes DO NOT KNOW! Sometimes you can have a rash, a bump, an insect bite type thing, a scratch, a numb feeling, chaffing, a yeast infection and guess what.......that could be HERPES! And it's possible to only have it once and never have a symtom again....BUT YOU HAVE IT FOR LIFE! Doesn't mean that your partner will ever get it and doesn't mean that you will ever pass it and it also doesn't mean that you know that you have it!

EDUCATE YOURSELVES PEOPLE!!!! THIS IS REALITY 70% OF OUR TEENAGE POPULATION HAS A FORM OF IT, 1 OUT OF 5 PEOPLE HAVE IT!!!! 80% OF INFECTED VICTIMS DON'T KNOW THEY HAVE IT!

Do you know that chicken pox, shingles, cold sores, are all Herpes related! Don't be so quick to judge. Judging is ignorance. Get educated!

I wouldn't have a problem dating someone and sleeping with someone with Herpes. There is medication and precautions. We should all be taking precautions to begin with! Nobody wants to get a virus or a disease, but who has the rights to condemn a victim of an STD? Would you cast out a cancer victim?

Besides, you are at risk all the time for STD's, besides Chlamydia...which is highly transmissable and all over out there...how would you like that in your mouth?, there is crabs and gardnella, syphlis, gonorrhea, candidiasis which is rampet, warts, HSV, PID,Trichonomiasis, HBLV, PPV, Hep B Hep C, HIV, AIDS, ONE HELL OF A WAY TO LEARN THE ALPHABET ISN'T IT??????

My point is, get educated, you are not exempt from this...people with Herpes are not bad people and people who are scared of it aren't either, but don't judge and don't think for a second that you can't have a normal and healthy sex life with a Herpes infected partner. A person is more than the herpes they have. Remember this if you don't remember anything else

A COLD SORE ON THE FACE IS NO DIFFERENT BELOW THE WAIST!!!!

Get educated and give it a break....
Traylynn

Do I believe what they say...no...is there a cure, absolutely somewhere, just like there is one for cancer, somewhere! I do know that herbal remedies for this particular ailment has outstanding results.

Should you be afraid...no...should you be cautious ABSOLUTELY...should you have safe sex...always and again it's up to you! There is no reason not to be able to have a normal sex life with herpes....it has never killed anyone! Auntie Jane probably kissed you with a big whoppin' cold core when you were 8..........still alive right? And you .here and there get a cold sore when you're sick? Yeah..geez that's life threatening huh! So when you get one on your snatch and nobody can see it.....do you buy blistex and put make up on it??? Or course not, but if you had one you'd treat it............do you run around kissing everyone with your cold sore on your mouth? IS EVERYONE GETTING MY POINT???

Educate yourselves, life is so much easier when you aren't ignorant!!!!

Good luck and have great safe sex out there! It's the universe's gift to us...learn how to use it wisely!!!!!

That is a bizarre statistic though. Help me with my math here. 1 in 5 has it. 80% don't know they have it. So how is it that they don't know yet the doctors do? They got tested but the doctors decided not to break it to them? It scares the hell out of me too, but I think these statistics have been, hmmm, stretched a little to aid in the fear-mongering. So I think basically that means 1 in 25 definitely has it, and they aren't sure about the rest because no one knows for sure. Definitely there would be people who have it and don't know, but there is no way to accurately know how many.

Don't take my word though, this is just a little math problem for me, definitely wouldn't go sleeping around based on that. Uh, be safe, wear a condom. This is you public service announcement for the day.

@drill
The stats where they say 1 out of 5 have it and 80% of those don't know... the way they come up with that is they will actually ask the ones who are diagonosed to indicate how many partners they've had unprotected sex with. So they just make estimates according to that. (that's assuming that people with this diagnosis are not all sleeping with the same people)

1) you can have herpes and NEVER have symptoms or an outbreak--that is why stats are so high--MOST people don't know they have it because they've never experienced symptoms or and outbreak

2) you can catch almost ANYTHING from cutlery and door handles--herpes is a VIRUS, just lik the common cold or influenza--but it is transmitted via SKIN TO SKIN (and of course sexual) contact--there may be a SLIM chance that you could contract it via an object but someone would have to touch their OPEN herpes sores and touch the object and then you'd have to touch it RIGHT afterwards.

3) You are taking a risk contracting ANY std when you become physically involved with anyone intimately. If you don't want an STD, keep your clothes on, and be very very aware of who you date and become intimate with (on any physical level)

Ok, well that makes sense. Still no guarantee its accurate, but at least they are not pulling numbers out of a hat.

One reason the statistics are confusing is because anyone with a cold sore most likely has herpes 1 or possibly herpes 2. A blood test will only show if you have been exposed to herpes and the type, doesn't differentiate the location. A cold sore is contagious 2 - 3 days before an outbreak this means you can catch a coldsore if you were to kiss someone the day before they had a coldsore appear because they were contagious. (the skin is shedding these cells). The only way to avoid it is to be celebate, avoid having anyone kiss you (even your Aunt May). This also means not having unprotected oral sex, if a partners' coldsore will appear in a couple of days they can unknowingly transmit the virus to you.

For women the most common way they now contract genital herpes 1 is from oral sex.
If you need clarification on statistics and how to avoid contracting go talk to a doctor at a STD clinic or planned parenthood. They work with STDs all the time and are more knowledgeable than a GP.
