| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/8/2006 4:36:11 PM | Ok, so here is a random question, but one that I never know the answer to.
How much do you tip the pizza delivery guy? I know most places include a delivery charge when you pay for the pizza so do you even need to tip him/her?
So for a $20 pizza order I have usually just rounded off the bill and added a couple of dollars. Should it be more?
I don't want to be cheap or insult the guy....
What do think? | |

| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/8/2006 4:43:42 PM | You guys took too long!! He already came.
The order was $27. so I gave him $30.
Sound ok? | |
|
| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/8/2006 4:51:21 PM | Yeah, that's pretty much what I would do. The delivery charge actually goes directly to the delivery guy to pay for the gas... but I think it's nice to give him a little extra.
I had to do deliveries before, and I had to use my own car for it, so I always appreciated the extra tips, it made paying for the car a little easier (gas, oil, etc...).
If my bill comes to 16-18, I ussually pay the guy 20. So generally a couple dollars.

| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/8/2006 5:55:16 PM | Yeah, I think your tip was fine
Last time I tipped him $5 - I didn't have any singles and I appreciate having a delivery service
|
| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/8/2006 6:05:35 PM | | I usually tip $5 rounding up so that I don't get any change back. It's so much easier to do the math when there is no change involved. | |
|
| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/8/2006 6:48:27 PM | | Standard tip is 15% percent for decent service, 20% for really good, just like in any restaurant. | |
|
| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/8/2006 10:50:19 PM | | I think it is different for everyone I am in the service industry and my tips are everything to me...I do really well with my tips so I am quite generous with other servers...as long as they are doin a decent job of course..with places I frequent often I have been known to tip quite large...when ordering food at home if it get's here quick then i'll throw em a 10..and hey if it's a weekend and im loaded needin that greased out food they might be even luckier, But don't feel bad for giving a small tip these ppl do very well usually anyways or at least pretty good | |
|
| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/9/2006 1:08:13 AM | | 15 % is fine. I give a little more if the weather's bad or something. I'll round it off let him keep the change. | |
|
| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/9/2006 1:40:05 AM | For a $20.00 pizza..... $3.00 if under 5"10 and $5.00 if over 5"10. Carrie | |

| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/9/2006 8:31:26 AM | Before tipping the delivery guy, I would like everyone to keep in mind one thing. In 2005 CNN Moneyline published the top ten most dangerous jobs in America. Delivery drivers were on that top ten list. Police and firefighters were not on that list.
Ever since I read that, I have given delivery drivers better tips. They have to be the most underpaid profession considering the danger involved.

| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/9/2006 8:32:16 AM | I delivered pizza a couple of years ago during the summer. Just did it to make some extra cash before heading back to school... People usually gave about 10% or so, with a few actually giving 15%. Most people just gave me $2 regardless of how much the order came to though, so whatever.
I remember though, my very first night was a Friday night, which meant the store was open until 1am instead of 11pm. Someone called at about 12:40 and asked for a delivery; the guy lived like 30 minutes away, so there's an hour right there, plus the time it takes to actually cook the pizza. When I got there, I was in a bad mood and just wanted to go home and get some sleep. Turns out there was this huge party at the house and everyone was stoned; too stoned to do math. The order was for like $13 or something; the guy gave me $65 and couldn't do the math, so he said, "Keep it all; this is giving me a headache" and went back inside.
I ran back to my car and drove away before he had realized what he'd just done. Heh heh.

| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/9/2006 10:06:02 PM | | I always figure if I'm tipping 20% in a restaurant for someone to bring the food to the table, then I'm going to tip more than that for someone to bring it all the way to my house. 25 - 30%. | |
|
| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/10/2006 1:52:48 AM | What kind of pizza?
If it had lots of toppings, it probably weighed more, and so he should make more for carrying it. I'd add 50 cents for each additional topping.
Were there sodas involved? Again, it's more to carry.
Did you come to the door naked? That is also a good tip. If you were naked, the monetary tip can be cut by nearly 50%.

Some places don't even pay for their hours though. The place I worked, whatever you made in tips was your pay. It went through a big management shift a while back though; the new people are paying their drivers $5 an hour. Freaking five dollars an hour! If you make ANYTHING, its off tips.

| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/10/2006 2:23:00 PM | In the past, it usually depends on how much money I have, but since I've been a pizza delivery guy before, I generally try to give them a good tip. At the very least, when I'm strapped for cash, I'll just tell them to keep the change. Otherwise, I'll tip 15-20%.
As for the automatic charge, I'm not sure. Some places I've worked didn't charge one at all. Others only charged for really far deliveries (living in small towns, we would sometimes deliver WAY outside of town). But for any that did add the charge, some only give a portion of that to the driver to pay for their gas/maintenance (if they use their own car). Some places do give it all to them. But either way, it's usually to pay for usage of their own car, not to say their service was good.
I know this is a little bit of reverse-sexism, but sometimes I tip guys more than girls, because I've noticed when I was delivering, women make WAY more in tips than guys do. Even a not-so-attractive girl pizza deliverer will generally make more tips than the sexiest looking guy deliverer. Especially in a town with a college... So even though I generally tip about the same to everyone, if I have to make a decision based on amount of cash I have on hand, or whatever, I might do this. If it's a smoking hot woman, I won't feel too bad stiffing her a little. She'll be sure to make it up on her next delivery. But a kind of wierdo-looking guy? Probably doesn't get many tips, so I'll go ahead and give him that extra dollar that I was going to save to buy myself a Dr. Pepper tomorrow.

| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/16/2006 8:42:55 PM | Pizza delivery is the same as a regular waitress for me; 20%. A lot of people don't realize it, but most waiters/waitresses make less than minimum wage. They are expected to make their living off their tips. I worked my way through nursing school on $2.50/hr plus tips. Thank God for the generous people who appreciate good service! | |

| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/17/2006 10:46:34 PM | | how come no one tip me when I cook for them huh,, guess bad food. | |

| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/17/2006 11:09:03 PM | | Just don't over tip the pizza guy... My pizza guy asked me for a job... | |
|
| Tipping the pizza guy Posted: 4/17/2006 11:12:27 PM | No place delivers this far out, so I never have to worry about it. When I was in town they always charged a delivery fee, and so I never gave more, because it wasn't required. | |
