I have been and it was defo worth a visit but if you are planning a European jolly it would not be on my hit list

Barcelona, Amsterdam, Venice, Rome and Budapest are much more fun and places i would prefer to go to anytime. The great thing about European rail travel (except UK which is DAMN EXPENSIVE!! talking 55$ for a 1.5 hour trip on the train!!! still annoys me everytime i have to go on the train) is that it is very cheap- City hopping from say Paris- Madrid-Barcelona is easy, cheap and fun!! dont book a tour do it youself save tonnes of cash. i would be pleased to give you lots of great links.

Amsterdam of course was awesome but Venice would be my choice!! when are you thinking? venice was better out of summer in my opinion- the crisp air, wrapping up warm, snuggling on a Gondola... cant beat it!!

this is me assuming you havent been to all the places i have suggested already- if so i am sure you know how great they are.

Prague is beautiful. And it IS fun as well. Lot's of young ppl from all over the world. It's got wonderful athmosphere of a comsmopolitan city, but it can't be compared with e.g. London. For me, it's better than Paris. Though I might just haven't seen enough of the latter...
Prague has one of the most wonderful old town, and cute little streets and street markets. Plenty of cafes, and pubs with one of the best beers in the world (my opinion lol)
And it's cheap. At holidays you can easily accomodate at one of many student's dormitories. Some of them are close to the centre. It's got cheap subway for transport.
And the Czech are very friendly.

Venice is beautiful, and romantic, I love this city as well. But I think Prague is more fun.

When I watched the movie Undeworld, it was all shot in Prague and the scenery was unreal. It looks beautiful there.
So the people are friendly?

Many movies are shot in Prague, I can remember Triple X, and I guess the Hostel.. but many, many more, and yes - it is beautiful. :-)
And yes, the Czech are very friendly, but you WILL meet ppl from all over Europe there, lots of Poles btw.. ;-)

when exactly would you like to go there? (I mean the time of year)

I loved my brief visit to Prague. I remember a cemetary where the gravestones are literally so close together they're knocking each other over. I was so jet-lagged on that leg of the trip that I don't remember much else.

Oh yeah, while I was there the water wasn't safe to drink. I don't know if that's still the case though. You might want to find that out. Bottled water is a good thing.

The cemetaries are like that also in Poland... that's just the way they are, maybe because of lack of space ;-)

And about water - yes, and it's the same here, it's not safe to drink tap water... bottled water only. You can get sick from tap water..

Cost wise, very inexpensive.

I forgot to mention, BEWARE OF GYPSIES!! They're very good at pickpocketing. Use underclothing pouches and don't keep all your money in one place. Spread it around. Keep some in your shoes, some in the pouches, and some back in your luggage. Whenever I travel, I use the ATM's and only pull out a small amount of money to use for the day. That way if it gets picked or stolen, it's not the end of my trip.

BarnBabe, that's a good advice, but it's true for any travels... However, if you're careful no need to take such precautions. Gypsies are 'dangerous', don't ever get involved into any conversation with them... even if they only ask you the way

As to when it's best to go I'd say late spring or summer, the best weather and most visitors which means - lots of various events. :-) Plus as i wrote before, the dormitories are open for tourists during summer holidays, and they're really cheap.

I spent a summer in Prague. Compared to most EU countries, Prague is relatively inexpensive. It has a beautiful and well preserved old town. Additionally, it has a very interesting and wonderful mix of archetectural styles, including art deco, art nouveau, and cubism, as well as classic styles. There are many day trips from Prague which are also interesting. A good place to spend some time and absorb European culture. There is a Kafka house and Kafka museum as well. I was there for 2 months and had no trouble or concerns whatsoever with pickpockets.

Ah man Prague was awesome and rich in history. Before that I was in Wien which was cool as well. I was all over Europe for 4 months. The train ride is good and cheap, and their are plenty of hostels. A few nights I stayed at AZ hostel in a 6 bed room all to myself. Lots of room, good showers, no kitchen, huge tv room. The other hostel was on Melantrichova listed on hostelworld the rooms crammed with bunkbeds tight together. I did not like it, almost got into a fight in my room at 4am with some high and mighty drunken teens on daddies money. But me being over 6' I always diffuse situations quickly. There is a huge club there which was awesome, cool squares. I got lost many times, always found my way within a half to one hour.

Be very careful of the Cash Exchange places!!!!!!!! I got ripped on the day I was leaving from a "Western Union" cash exchange. It was not much but for the few times I got ripped in Europe, I learned a lesson everytime.

I biked Czech in 94. I enjoyed the entire stretch of the Vlata - Czesky Krumlov, Czesky Budovice. Prague was great but even back then it was old news. I got more pleasure out of visiting the places I hadn't heard so much about and being pleasantly surprised by what they had to offer. I recommend getting out of the city for part of your trip.

But while you're there - def go to the puppet theatres and smoke a few cigars on the Mosts.

Prague is a great city but expect a ton of tourists, maybe its better off season. Krakow is a great City to visit, sort of a smaller version of Prague, when I went in '97 there were hardly any tourists.

^^ I agree. I liked the historical central market (inter alia) in Krakow. If you go that far you should check out Zakopane and the Tatras mountains too.

Edit: And when you get out of the city, stay in the Pensions. There's no better way to get a little color.
