Imitrex is probably the most used med for migraines with varying degrees of success and I'm glad it is working for you klo. The only concern I have is that taking meds without trying to find or treat the cause is like shutting the fire alarm off without putting out the fire

You're right. Ive heard a few people say that it doesnt work for them, so I guess it really does depend on the person. I believe they make a few other medications out there that are a lot stronger than Imitrex, I just cant think of them off the top of my head.

I've been getting them for 13 years now. I get severe ones almost weekly that last anywhere from 2 to 4 days to the point of getting very sick with them. I've had every single test done more than once and kept food journals for 6 month periods. It's very frustrating not knowing what causes this. I've been on every different medication and not too much works. I have been on the Imitrex for so long that it no longer does anything anymore. The daily meds are even worse. For one they don't work and the side effects don't help. I'm starting massage therapy and am also considering acupuncture and chiropracture treatment.
I'm just venting, but am also curious to see how many others suffer from severe migraines so frequently. I honestly feel like I'm losing my mind half the time. I guess being in daily pain like this causes emotional stress as well.
If you have and advice, please share!!!

Arley8337 - you are not alone,

I've been getting severe migraines for as long as I remember. I spent alot of time in the school office as a kid. So much that they thought I made it up. Anyway, I've been threatened to be written up at work because of it and lost friends over it also. People that don't understand think you make excuses not to hang out with them. It really hurts sometimes and I used to think I was a freak.

I currently work with people of the healthcare field that actually understand. My boss was the person that pointed out that I would get them the day before it was going to rain, snow or sleet. So then I realized that it was almost always the weather and I can't control it at all. I knew I got them when it was really hot and humid out and going from air conditioning to the outdoors, back to the air really makes me sick. I really did not realize I got them all year round or what exactly caused them. I've learned alot about myself working with people that care.

These days I'm on meds that make it less severe and I can usually get rid of it unless it's really bad outside. I take a couple things daily to prevent it or make them less severe, I take Fiorial (aspirin, caffine & sedative) and a soda when I get one and last resort is the expensive Imitrex. I used to eat them like candy then my insurance changed and I could only fill it 1x every 30 days. That didn't go over well when I needed one about 5-6x a week and there are only 9. The really irritating part is that I can just walk out to get in the car to go to work and I feel it starting instantly. In the spring and fall this is daily. I didn't use to get them this easily. I think it sounds ridiculous that I have to do is be outside for a couple of seconds. I am greatful that something works but am now starting to feel hopless again simply because of the frequent pill popping.

I know this is a dumb thing to mention, but do you know if caffiene helps you out or just makes your migraine worse. I had never heard anything except stay away from caffiene if you have one cause it will only make it worse, and I never drank pop, so I never knew. My doc said to try drinking some soda when it's starting and it actually helps alot, along with the meds ofcourse. Just a thought. What have you tried so far, have you tried Nadolol and Nortrypiline?

blueeyes3439 : In that you get your migraines worse in the spring and fall I would want to know if you have any seasonal allergies. For example if you have a ragweed alergy you may need to take allergy med's to help you with your migraines, something not thought of as a typicaly migraine med, but may help.

When anyone has been cycling meds for a long period of time they should be aware of the chance of a rebound head ache. Almost that your body is addicted to the meds you are taking therefore you need more and more of it and then it not only doesn't do the trick anymore, but you actually mildly addicted to it.

Wine, Chocolate, Caffeen and Cheese are the most common substances often attributed to trigger migraine but MOST frequently what I see in my clinic on almost a daily basis are people whose migraines are triggered by weather changes. Usually weather dropping from a high to a low pressure system will be the biggest culprit and once the crappy weather gets there the Head Ache isn't quite as bad. Unfortunately the main stream medical field does not recognize this as a triggering factor. Stupid IMO as many people site this as the major contributing factor. What this makes me look at , at least for part of a treatment is the persons diaphragm muscle. It is the most important muscle when you breath in. It is also very important to help keep the "pressures" constant in you body. Treatment whether by yourself (i.e. diaphragmatic breathing excercises, yoga...etc.) or by a therapist should help. A therapist of any kind how has training in Craniosacral Therapy and or Visceral Manipulation can help. Most Osteopaths are well versed in these areas but other kinds of therapist like Massage Therapist often have training in these areas. A liver detox might be in order and or a colon detox because with a long history of med's you liver and colon and actually kidneys may be toxic. You have to find a way to detox those organs to help aliviate your migraines. Things that you can do on your own are as simple as taking an epson salt bath at very warm temperatures (3-5) cups of epson salts and or a sauna or steam bath. There are many more if you are interested.

One if not the most important thing for anyone with migraine or any type of head aches, is to MAKE SURE YOU ARE HYDRATED. If you are not drinking water and or you are drinking caffeen or and alcohol on a regular basis, you are dehydrating yourself. Caffeen and water will robe your body of water and if you are not drinking water on top of that, you are definitely dehydrating yourself.

Well , Blah Blah Blah. there is lots more..............but arms......too......tired....lol

Good luck

It's funny I see this thread. Just yesterday I was reading in the "Men's Health Magazine" that had an article:

NUTRITION BULLETIN

"THE HEADACHE MEDICINE"

Cutting back on carbs may relieve you of more than a few extra pounds. In a new study, researchers at Albert Einstein college of medicine found that low-carbohydrate diets help reduce the frequency and severity of headaches in regularsufferers. "Half of those surveys said they attained the same kind of relief from low-carb diets as they did from a migraine medication." says study author C.J. Segal-Issacson, Ed.D., R.D. Although the scientists aren't sure why a low-carb prescription helps headaches, they speculate that some people may be more sensitive to carbohydrates and the allergens they contain - such as gluten, a wheat protein. Take note of when your headaches occur. Forty percent of the patients reported pain after eating starchy or sugary foods.

I don't know. I have honestly tried everything. Since being off of all daily meds I have been taking Magneseum. It is suppose to help relax muscles and ease tension. It seems to be working a bit. I have no allergies what so ever and do limit any trigger foods from my diet just to be safe. Taking your meds with carbonated drinks is suppose to help the meds disolve quicker into your system. The best thing with the meds is to switch them up frequently so you don't become immune to them. Which is what happened with the Imitrex for myself. Lately I've been using the Maxalt rizatriptan wafers. They work pretty good if I take them as soon as possible.
I'm not really looking for advice here, because believe me I have gone through everything. I even considered a breast reduction to try to improve the tension in my neck and shoulders which can cause more frequent migraines. I just want to know if anyone else feels like they are going to lose it! I get really angry when I get a migraine now. I guess just out of frustration, but I feel like picking up something and smashing myself over the head just to knock myself out so I don't have to feel the pain. K, I know that sounds completely insane. But I have heard of other people who cut themselves or hurt themselves in other ways just to deflect the pain from the migraine so I know I'm not the only one who knows what it is like to go through this. I use to get depressed alot and for the longest time I didn't know why. Now I know it's just from feeling so shitty and being in so much pain every day. I constantly worry about what it's going to be like when I have kids. I don't know how I am suppose to deal with this then.
Anyways, if anyone needs any advice or needs to vent, feel free! I completely understand.

I can't help myself, sorry, you did say you weren't looking for advice but ........ sorry for prying or offering an opinion but even the fact that you have taken several med' or cycled them tells me that your body is probably toxic. It really becomes a viscious cycle and you have to break the cycle in order to beat the migraine. I saw someone today who had migraine headaches for over 50 years and for over a decade they had them everyday. She is doing much better after just a few treatments because she broke or interupted the cycle, and she had the phycological barrier of not believing she would ever get better to overcome as well. It is important to release the muscles, vertebra, rib...ect that will affect blood flow to and from the head (and brain of course), and balancing the nervous system is imparative.

Sorry Couldn't help myself! Just want to empasize that there is LOTS of help out there, even for those who do not think there is.......Promise...

I totally agree with you. The daily pain is too much to handle sometimes, I makes me so mad. I do wish someone would knock me out. I have thought about having kids and I don't think I could. I know it sounds selfish to people, but I don't want to give it to someone else. Everyone tells me that that probably won't happen but there's a good chance it could. There have been times I've actually been mad at my parents for having me, or in other words, giving me this hell. It is definately in the family and I know it goes back 4 generations atleast. Can I ask you a question? I haven't had to date in a while and I find this really hard. Most people when they find out about the migraines run the other way or think I make them up. This kinda makes the whole dating and finding worthwhile friends thing really hard. Do you have the same problem? It seems my best friends are my coworkers who are 15 years older than me.

I'm not really allergic to anything. I specified spring and fall because the weather jumps up and down alot. It could be 60 during the day and 30 or 40 at night. If the weather changes 10 degrees in a short period of time I know I will get one. I know it's the barometric pressure and it just pisses me off that it's not something that I can control. The stuff I take does work, it just depends on what it's doing outside. I can usually get rid of them before they are totally horrible but it's how they are still so constant that's killing me. There are things that I have done to cause them and I don't do them. I can't even lay on my stomach cause I will have an almost instant headache. That to me sounds stupid and hard to believe but its the truth. I have kept a food journal for months and thats just isn't it. I don't even eat most of the foods on the list of no-no foods. Not when I have a headache and it's going to rain. I have tried taking magnesium, doing yoga and pilates, drinking water like a camel. None of these things have helped me. I have heard from others with this problem that I should try going out west cause it worked wonders for them. Like to Nevada, the weather is very different there. If there really is no humidity like here, I am up for trying that. I don't know what area you live in, but let me just tell you that the weather in Illinois just sucks!

I used to get migraines AAAAALLLLLL the time. I was taking Imitrex pretty much daily. I know what my triggers are.....caffine, red wine, processed foods, chocolate, the weather, that sort of thing. I try to my best to watch out for the triggers, but they were getting really bad. I've done all the tests to see if there's something physically wrong CT-scan, MRI, all that kind of thing and nope, there's nothing wrong upstairs.....I'm just lucky. lol

I now take something called Topomax as a daily preventative. My doctor and I messed around with the dosage for a bit to figure out what worked best. Cut waaaaay down on the amount of migraines I actually get and now when I do actually get a migraine, my doc just gave me a new med to try and it seems to work great with way less side effects than the imitrex. Imitrex made me sick, not that the migraine didn't anyway, but it gave me the shakes and made me sick to my stomach. This new stuff doesn't make me sick and gets rid of the headache usually within under an hour. It's called Relpax. It comes in 20 and 40 mg pills and you can only take 40 mg in a 24 hr period. Also with respect to the topomax, my doctor does blood tests regularly to check to see how my liver is metabolizing the drug. It can be hard on your liver. Just an fyi.

I get migraines. I used to get them a lot, but since I moved to Calgary, I've been getting them a lot less.

I use Imetrex too, but I have the injectable version. It works alright. My only complaint is, it doesn't do much for the symptoms that go with my migraines. The symptomes/aura is sometimes worse than the migraine..

I think this, at least in some people, is because they feel like their body is betraying them. Believe me, I've thought of the 'frying pan over the head' solution more than once. Fortunately as I've got older my migranes have reduced in frequency. They were worst when I was a child actually. Most likely due to mental stress as my home like wasn't peachy and I was a sensative kid. I average maybe 1 a month now, and if I can get something into me at first sign of a headache coming on I can usually beat it. At that early point almost anything will work, including advil, or tylenol. But, if it gets it's hooks into me I can be down for 3 days in absolute misery.

He's a question. Anyone have any unusual ways for treating their migranes. If I had a bad on I couldn't do anything with I'd sit in a bathtub full of hot water and put an icepack on my head. Gave me quite a bit of relief actually. I've spent many an hour sleeping in the tub like that when my head hurt to much to even grab a nap. Seemed to force some of the excess blood that was in my head likely due to overly dialated blood vessles. When I get a migrane, the veins in my right temple bulge and become noticably prominent, when at other times they are unnoticable.

yes.
years ago it was suggested I stay away from red meat, that helped some but not much.
I recently found out I'm gluten sensitive, and while reading up on this I found out that gluten for a gluten sensitive person can mean migraines. I have fewer migraines now that I avoid gluten. Its not easy and I don't recomend it for those who are not sensitive to gluten, but it works pretty good for me.

Apparently Oxygen's supposed to help. Like the ones that people with emphazema (sp) use. My doctor's suggested it a couple times, but I don't want to go sit in emerg. to wait for the nurses to triage me and then the doc to shine the lovely pen light in my eyes....uuuugggghh. But I'm told it works quite well. I've never tried it though.

my son 13 gets really nasty migraines..... NO aura as they ALWAYS start between 4-5AM and he wakes up in agony can can't even from words to ask for help I just hear him moaning. He's had CT's and MRI's etc. allergy testing, diet monitoring, stress monitoring to no avail,. welcome to the world of migraines. poor thing. A few of the gals I work with get really nasty ones too and they swear by migraine meds,. or Advil migraine ( whatever you are taking ) PLUS a can of COKE... must be a COKE apparently pepsi doesn't work as well. I tried it for the few I have had and it works! My son thinks so too just takes a bit longer has he already has his full blown by the time I get to him. Oh and peppermint oil just under the nose and on your temples, and the usual dark room and COLD cloth on head.
