Oh, and it was getting dark. The emergency gear went down. All I had was a life jacket a summer rated survival suit. No hopes of being rescued before hypothermia set in.

It is difficult to imagine that people still deliberately mutilate their own kids, simply to make them better beggars
But that is very common practise there
A strictly enforced society of Classes/Castes
If you are born as one Caste, you will die still in that Caste
A Buddhist Society where Ritual Murder is quite acceptable.
Stoning Adulterers etc etc
Where abject poverty and disease are watched by thousands driving past in great wealth

Posted: 5/9/2006 1:03:14 AM | Port Moresby. A mate got robbed at knife point at the ATM in the airport! Then the so called car that was supposed to pick us up turned up 40 minutes late and was full of other people. We'd booked the damn thing and saw a picture of a small luxury sedan. It was a utility with people piled up in the back.
Detroit, I didn't get a wake up call, missed my coach and was harassed at the Greyhound terminal by the staff.
But in both situations it was not unberable, just not really good. | |

No turists, only me, waking down town Jakarta (population 17 million), the way everyone was looking at me, I almost regretted I didn't wear diapers (nappies)!
I only wanted to hunt for Cobras in the jungles of central Jawa (one of the photos in my profile) but I thought I'd go to the city & buy stuff since it was cheap. But I wandered off into the part of the city where I definitely shouldn't have!
I felt 100 times safer in the jungle than on thr streets of Jakarta, or I should say: some parts of Jakarta, like Bronx or Queens (equiv).
Note: the photo in my profile was not taken in Jakarta but in some village at the edge of the jungle. I wasn't quite liked there either, you can just see the mutual mistrust in this very picture. | |

Nothing went right from the moment I got off the plane!!!
One damn depressing place.... everything was like being in the 1800's still - and rude, ignorant people. I got the impression that they REALLY hate Americans there - and I'm a Canadian!!! Guess I should have worn my, " I AM CANADIAN" beer ball-cap. | |

It really stunned me. My friend insists Taipei is nice and I'd never wanna leave... but his parents also own like 5 of the top restaurants there and a bunch of factories. So next time I go... I'll have to see from his point of view lol... then maybe I'll like it? | |
