Has anyone read the Satanic Bible? What did you really think of it?

So has anyone out there read the Satanic Bible by Anton La Vey in it's entirety?

If so what did you ultimately get out of it? Did any of you consider yourselves Christians before and then maybe it changed your ultimate view of yourself?

Since the definition of a "christian" is somebody who believes in Christ coming to save humanity and someone who tries to follow his teachings. Did it reaffirm your beliefs or question the need of it all?

I have not read the book in it's entirety but have always been curious? Yet I have always been made to feel I was wrong for even wanting to know. I just know I'm not happy with where I am right now. Not that I want to join another religion or anything like that I just want to be more well rounded and versed.

Are any of you afraid to read it for fear you might see some of yourself in it or relate more to it than your bible?

They always tell you not to "invite these things into your life" but do you ever wonder if it is just because they know they will "lose your soul" if you learned the truth, or at least opened yourself to all views? And actually got you to "think" instead of just "blindly" following?

hmmm..... I'm not looking to be hated here or receive a whole bunch of "how dare you" mail, I just want to know if any christians out there have read both? Or if any satanist read both the bibles?

And why did you chose one or the other, do you even have to chose?

I am NOT looking at the whole afterlife issue though I'm just asking about the ideals and practices of both in relating on how you treat your fellow man here on earth!

Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to peruse its pages. However I feel that even if I were to read it the book would have no bearing on whether I remained Druid or changed to Christianity/Satanism.

well its not much of a 'religion' because its not at all spiritual, its more of a lifestyle and childish philosophy. I dont think its even an interesting read, its very cliche.
Alot of modern satanists dont even like La vey's form of satanism, its theatrics and tries too hard to be shocking through its spooky imagery.
For more interesting satanism there's Luciferian, and the Temple of Set.

I don't think I have ever seen the satanic book, but I bet it would be an interesting read. I am a very spiritual person, and although I like to think and say I am a God fearing man, I don't always act as though I am one. I think your post is very interesting. When I ask people if they believe in God, I always follow it up with do you believe in satan. I do this because I do not feel that one can truly believe in God if they are unable to accept that there is also a satan. Have you read the Holy Bible, Old and New Testements? How many testements are in the satanic book?

Cheers.

Interesting book. I like the moral philosophy it presents. However, all that stuff about magick is kind of silly.

I had been a Christian for a long time when I read it... during an 'experimental' phase.
It's really mostly just La Vey's philosophy as dredged up out of Aleister Crowley's writings...

The beginning has a lot to do with his distrust of the Christian church... that it is hypocritical and full of people trying to hold power over others... keeping them from really becoming all they could... and I can find some agreement with that.
He feels that Christianity breeds weak willed sheep who are not thinking for themselves.

A lot of what he promoted was that people take responsibility and open their eyes to what is going on around them... recognize their own assets/powers and use those to get where they want to go. A lot of it would easily mesh with the stuff you'd hear in a Tony Robbins seminar or in secular self-help books.
There really wasn't anything 'Evil' about the book... he wasn't promoting that you go out and eat babies or assault Christains... the worst thing about it is that, taken as written and on its own, it's a pretty selfish philosophy. Being selfish is not always a bad thing though.

I think the Satanic Bible is a lot closer to a Holy Writ of how most people (including a lot of supposed Christians) are living their lives these days than the Christian Bible is...
we mostly treat each other well as long as it doesn't get in the way of 'getting what I want!'.

Oh, and yeah, the magic stuff is pretty silly and melodramatic/theatrical... but entertaining if you enjoy that sort of thing.

I really don't know much about it like I said before, but I just thought I had always hear that it was the first true written or accepted version of the "satanic bible". But it's not that old, and no I'm not into dramatics or silly magic.

So does any one out there have a better suggestion on what to read?

what is Luciferian? or the Temple of Set? any particular "good" or "very descriptive" books on I guess the true philosophy of it all?

What I liked and still follow is his creed:

I read The Satanic Bible in high school, and found it to be little more than a rehashing -- and not very good I might add -- of the philosophy of Frederich Nietzsche, and the "magick" of Aleister Crowley. I wasn't at all impressed with it whatsoever.

ya, I follow this more than anything else also, "do unto others as they do unto you"

so what about the whole "turn the other cheek" thing in Christianity vs. the "don't turn the cheek" and just move on thing in I guess "Satanism"?

how many times do you allow yourself to be beaten down before you just say "screw this" your gonna get whats coming to you, I don't want to wait for "god's" supposed justice?

"I feel funny typing satanism, because so many people view satan as something bad but I just feel it's like the whole ying-yang thing you need a counterpart to all.

The bible is full of examples of retribution and vengeance... but supposedly those are 'good' only when God sanctions them... that being said, I don't think Jesus taught that people should be weak (meek is a different thing).

Satanism is just more inward directed... less socially concious maybe...

There's no 'True philosophy of it all'... unlike the Bible, which claims to be thousands of years old in parts... and to be the literal 'word of god' in parts... there is not (that I know of) a converse 'word of Satan' with the same tradition or common acceptance.
(thought there are plenty of crackpot texts that claim to be dictated by demons they are not widely accepted by a variety of groups).

Mostly you've got a tradition of various magic texts that may or may not even mention Satan... and there is not a clear philosophy there.
The closest thing to a 'gospel' for Satanists that I know of is the Crowley stuff... but though he liked to use 'Satanic' imagery I don't know that he ever formally called himself a 'Satanist'...

I think one of the core tenents of Satanism, as I understand it, is that you shouldn't need to look to any higher authority outside of yourself... you don't need a book/church/priest... you just need the ability to see your truth and act upon it without fear.

(just my opinions, mind you... and I'm certainly NOT a Satanist).

I do the same thing by asking supposed "christians" if they believe in Satan but they always get so darn defensive.

I believe in a "devil" just as much as, if not more, than a "God" because I see so much more of it around me even in their supposed "acts for god" like a bombing of an abortion clinc. How is that for "God" the killing of more people, hmmmm...... just wondering.

All these people are going to die eventually anyway why bother? right?

I believe that in the end every one will get their "just rewards"

Here's an interesting side note...If you've read the Jewish Tanakh (which is the Christian Old Testament) Satan is actually mentioned only twice, and that is in the Book of Job. There are no other references to Satan whatsoever in the Tanakh. I just thought I'd mention that.

^^^^

In addition it is believed that Satan wasn't any sort of devil figure as we know it today. Satan was actually another god from one of the gentile races; no reference is ever given to him being a "fallan angel".

the book of the dead is the necronomicon, is is purly a spell book, no religious teaching. ive read it. i belive it was written in babalonion (obviosly i dont know how its spelled)

stanic bible- it is not about whorshipping the devil, it is a spiritual religion were you are your own god and you live to please yourself, not a god. and practicing magic is not manditory as people think, it is an option that one can follow to better ones life. having an unlucky day, cast a spell for good luck.

if someone smites you, hit them back 2 fold.

the deadly christian sins are the commandments to live by.

and no if you read it demons will not come through your front door and drag you to hell. read it with an open mind, and dont think "satan will come up from hell and get me". satanism has nothing to do with the christian devil.

I've never read the satanic bible. I have no desire to do so... too busy doing other things.

However, a friend of mine told me he read it once. He used to be a satanist. He told me he actually thought it was boring and was unable to finish it. He wasn't won over to Christianity by anything he read or anything anyone preached to him. He was won over by the prayers of his mom and later, after she got saved, his wife. He was also a hard-core drug addict. He'd been through the 12 step programs etc. The moment he accepted Christ, he felt the hand of God reach in and pull those addictions out of him. He sobered up in an instant. He's been clean ever since. That was over 15 years ago. He also said that his wife, who was in another room crying her eyes out because of him, heard angels singing.

I read it. If you take it at its face (and I gather most of what he writes about himself is nonsense) its actually sad and paradoxical. The guy discovers hypocrisy in people. Shocking! Anyway, disillisusioned, he doesn't even reject Christianity, he just picks the side destined to lose in the whole Christian theology. Satanists are actually far more literal believers in the Bible than most Christians, just kind of screwed up. You don't bet on the Washington Generals. You don't put your money on the loser in a fixed fight.

I haven't read this book. There are so many positive books I will read instead of this one. To each his own. Some folks love the darkness rather than the light. And the light and dark have nothing in common. So enjoy your choices, for the light or for the darkness of the soul.

I haven't read this book.

From their website:

Satanists are epicurean, skeptical atheists who see Satan as a symbol of pride, individualism, and the quality of questioning all dogmas. The word in Hebrew means “adversary” and so we are each “Satans” to the doctrines that would have people use faith instead of reason to understand the universe in which we live. Our goal is to enjoy this, the only life we have and not waste it in anticipation of a mythical afterlife or an imagined apocalypse.

"Darkness of the souls" is a pretty dire sort of statement to make, it indicates to me that, there is NO in-between, thus life is black and white, to which I'd say it is not a sensible conclusion in the modern age.

nes4ever69 although I've never read the necronomicon it was actually written by one of my favorite authors Mr H.P. Lovecraft. It has no truth to it at all.
