| anyone been to thialand? Posted: 5/6/2006 6:29:35 PM | I lived in Thailand for a year teaching English and working for "The Nation", Thailand's largest English daily. I thought it was a great country, but Bangkok, where I lived, was just horribly hot, dirty, and sometimes dangerous.
I never did the tourist thing, although I've been everywhere throughout the country. By tourist thing, I mean bars, bar girls, clubs, and drugs. I was married and living in a two story townhouse and generally doing the domestic thing.
However, Thailand is a country where everything is possible, especially for a white guy with some money. If you want to work, you'll find opprotunities there that you'll never find here. If you just want to stay for a couple of weeks you'll have a ton of fun as well...just ask all the balding, obese English men who live there for decades and still call the locals "s".
It all depends on what you're looking for, but no matter what, you'll have experiences there that you will never find in Canada. If you're wondering if you should go....I say go. The beauty of the country, the charm of it's people, and the culture shock of using their toilets for the first time will affect you for the rest of your life.

| anyone been to Thailand? Posted: 5/7/2006 7:46:23 AM | Had been there for over a dozen times, like it but wouldn't say it's the best on earth, as I haven't traveled enough Was there working on a post-tsunami project during last Christmas, that I'd visited the most affected areas hit by the tidal waves; such as Khao Lak, Krabi and Phuket islands. No doubts they're beautiful places that worth paying every visit. Good value accommodations and restaurants are all over, friendly locals remain as the best part of my memory. Yes, I'd recommend it. | |

| anyone been to thialand? Posted: 5/8/2006 6:15:42 AM | I loved my experiences in Thailand. I visited Chaing Mai in northern Thailand...it was a nice place to visit but it was after a Typhoon came accross Vietnam into Thailand and there was a lot of flooding. Still the people were fantastic and loved learning about the Northern Hill Tribes and their experiences.
Southern Thailand was where I went to relax and hit the beach and the water is beautiful...a lot of great beaches, I loved Koh Samui what a great little island with amazing beaches. Very relaxing and enjoyed every minute that I was there.
I'm planning another trip back in the next year or two.

| anyone been to thialand? Posted: 5/9/2006 7:23:28 PM | | Have been there... a beautiful contry....but would not think it was the best place on the earth. | |
|
| anyone been to thialand? Posted: 7/14/2006 8:48:24 PM | Pattaya is an interesting place...the bar scene is a little much but to each their own.
Pros:
Nice surrounding islands Very inexpensive Much cleaner than Bangkok Many, many friendly people
Cons:
Pattaya main beach is not the best Watch for cons..especially ppl with sob stories and that are overly friendly Nightlife scene gets a little too much After awhile there is not much to do during the day
IMO....check out Chiang Mai
Have a great time!! | |

| anyone been to thialand? Posted: 7/15/2006 1:01:20 PM | I've been Krabi, (not so great) full of honeymooners and ladies of the night,so we ferried to Phi Phi, that was amazing (where 'The Beach' was filmed) Spent a perfect day, lazing on a boat feeding parrot fish pineapple and watchin the sun set, bliss... then ferried to Phuket (too touristy for me) then Bangkok (preferred Kuala Lumpar)..
All in all Thailand is amazing but its what you make it, make sure you travel with a like minded companion and you will have fun no matter what..
Can anyone tell me what Phi Phi is like now, Iwas there the month before the tsunami and would be interested on its welfare post.. have fun wherever you go x

| anyone been to thialand? Posted: 7/16/2006 10:00:44 PM | I've now lived in ten countries, and I wouldn't say Thailand is the 'best place on earth', but I believe it's 'one of the best'.
jon, Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand

| anyone been to thialand? Posted: 7/18/2006 9:40:58 AM | Been there a couple times.
Go north for some jungle adventure, head south for some beaches, diving, snokeling, etc. Also makes a great base to jump to Laos, Vietname, Cambodia and Malasia.
Also, all the things down there are sooooo cheap. Replace your wardrobe and get some suits made.

| anyone been to thialand? Posted: 7/19/2006 8:41:14 PM | Absolutely. Enjoy the Tuk Tuk rides (they're drive like crazy people -- not just there, it's an Asia thing -- India is worse :) enjoy the GREAT food. North to Cheng Mei for crafts, jewelry and silk. South to great scuba diving and beaches (Phi Phi island isn't too bad). Get some nice massages, go to the Farmers floating market a couple of hours outside of Bangkok.
enjoy! Tom | |

| anyone been to thialand? Posted: 7/20/2006 3:28:27 PM | | top place, would have to recommend it… especially the diving…night life isn’t bad.. Bangkok is a little on the seedy side in some places, but hey food and night life is superb and the locals are the most friendliest I have ever met | |
|
| anyone been to thialand? Posted: 7/25/2006 9:27:33 PM | Yep! I've been to thailand 5 or 6 times. I'd go there for visa(passport) runs from Taiwan, 45min flight, for a week or so.
Diving! Koh Tao has some incredible visibility, cheap bungalos ($5/night) at the quiet end of the beach.
Good times! In Pattaya (hooker central :( ) I rented a Yamaha R1 $18 for 24hours and rode it to the cambodian border 270km/h, FUN!
Food! Prawns the size of lobsters (not a lie) at the price of a hamburger.
Beaches! White sand and crystal clear water.
Koh=island
Koh Phi Phi was great
Koh Samet nice beaches and lots of singles
Koh Chiang more of the same.
Koh Tao has the best diving.
Go! | |
