| Reverse Discrimination Posted: 5/7/2006 10:09:50 AM | Who are the true racists now? American “whites” are accused of racism, bigotry, intolerance… if they even so much as try to defend what they have always had, or resist changing to what they consider unacceptable. And they don’t even have to be “white”. As long as they are perceived as such, they are hated just for not agreeing. Gays, blacks, Mexicans, or any other minority or special interest group can go around espousing THEIR beliefs, although completely contrary to that of the majority, and they are PROTECTED. Why is it that “whites” are the only people who are not allowed to even voice an opinion, and are the only ones who get those nasty labels? If everyone is supposed to be equal and this is supposed to be a democratic society where everyone has the same rights, why aren’t Caucasians allowed their voice? Why do they just get slammed for not agreeing with every special interest group? Seems the TRUE racism any more is against white people in America. Seems to me that all the crap about using a name in a math test being racist, that bigamy should be legalized for bisexuals, the whole country should learn every language of every immigrant to the US, the US should allow special interest groups to completely disrespect and rewrite the Star Spangled Banner, airlines should allow larger people to fill 2 or 3 seats but not charge any more….is nothing but reverse discrimination by these groups. Americans should just be allowed to be Americans without everyone expecting us to change what we are, and have been, for the whims of anyone who wants to yell and snivel loud enough to get their way. Not accepting something or wanting it, is not the same as racism and intolerance, it is personal preference. I could go through every profile on this site and find something that each profile claims to not like or approve of. So is every single person in here intolerant etc? | |

| Reverse Discrimination Posted: 5/7/2006 11:20:55 AM | | At least the current flood of immigrants are only inconveniencing you. When all the white people immigrated to North America, they decided to kill all the people that were already here and anyone surviving would be rounded up and forced to live on the crappiest piece of land anyone could find. | |

The thing about having free speech is that everyone's entitled to it. It doesn't get doled out based on who deserves it more or even who is right.

| Reverse Discrimination Posted: 5/7/2006 12:46:07 PM | defend what they have always had, or resist changing
Who is trying to take anything away from you? Change is necessary for progress. How is respecting another beliefs a threat to your own? I see a lot of irrational fear in unsubstantiated comments in your post.
I drove down the United States and was pretty apalled at how the hispanics were being treated. They are given jobs to do that no one else wants to do, for lower pay then probably many are getting and have to deal with a pretty high level of resentment. I heard MANY comments about hispanic people when I was down there that would be considered outright rednecked racism where I'm from. I heard comments like they are all illegals and there seemed to be a level of discust associated with the comments.
Regardless if they are illegal or not, they are still human beings and are only guilty of breaking some rules in order to work extremely hard for very little pay. I heard comments about them all squishing huge families into apartments...again with the discust. No thought to the fact that they have to live that way because their income prohibits living any other way. They wouldn't be there if there weren't US companies ready to exploit them.
I saw very few white people behind cash registers. To see them you had to go into offices. As an outsider appearing in, it looks like a lot of people complaining about the natural want of people to be treated as equals. They have the basic human RIGHTS to be treated as equals. While you do not have the right to exclude them or force them to be of your culture.
I do not believe that you can equate what an individual wants in a mate with intolerance in society. People have the right to chose to be with someone who has the same values as they do. But no one is asking you to give up your beliefs, just tolerate the beliefs of others.
Is it really sooooooo horrible the thought of living in a place that accepts more than your culture as the norm? Its that attitude of exclusion which is why affirmative action policies are required. Then people complain about "reverse descrimination" even though they have totally caused the situation in the first place.
If you don't let people in, they will NEVER move up the ladder, their society will NEVER grow and develop, and you will be faced with a very large and dependent population which in times of crisis are unable to support themselves because you have denied them the tools to do so.

| Reverse Discrimination Posted: 5/7/2006 1:14:01 PM | why aren’t Caucasians allowed their voice?
Because we have a very long history of abusing certain words. Our 'certain words' priveledges have been revoked until such a time comes that we can use them responsibly - ie: never.
BTW, not sure what happened to you; but you sound incredibly bitter. I hope some good comes to you and you stop seeing everything in the negative.

| Reverse Discrimination Posted: 5/7/2006 1:32:49 PM | “Oh but they do OP they march down the street wearing their white hoods viewing their thoughts on other races with the police lined up protecting them.” This remark is ridiculous and inflammatory. You are implying that the majority consider this acceptable and just allow it. I have NEVER seen anyone in a white hood in anything but a movie or a news report of some kind, much less would I engage in it. You are just pointing out another small interest group/minority. Badbrain- If you are referring to the native American Indians, I will never say anything good about what was done to them, or think it was fair in any way. If ANYONE has a reason to gripe, they DO. “The thing about having free speech is that everyone's entitled to it.” I believe that my point was, that it isn’t. “Who is trying to take anything away from you?” Jobs for one thing, and forget all that hooey about them doing jobs no one else would. It just isn’t true. “Change is necessary for progress.” I do not consider a lot of the changes to be good ones. Real food is still better than fast food and junk food if you ask me. I am not going to change from eating fresh to something you throw in a microwave just because it is “progress” to some. (Just an example.) “How is respecting another beliefs a threat to your own?” I never said it was a threat, I was simply asking why EVERYONE can’t ask the same respect. “I heard MANY comments about hispanic people when I was down there that would be considered outright rednecked racism where I'm from.” Probably not much different than the remarks made by Canadians against Americans every day. And your point would be what? That you don’t believe that it doesn’t go both ways? “They wouldn't be there if there weren't US companies ready to exploit them….I saw very few white people behind cash registers….As an outsider appearing in,” and getting a very distorted view, (I can't only think of one store I shop at that doesn't have "white" cashiers) you are making a lot of assumptions on what you perceived on your “drive down”. It sounds like you are pretty much buying into the propaganda regarding American stereotypes, while you are trying very hard to defend the stereotypes made regarding mexicans. I think you just proved my point that only those who are perceived as “white” aren’t allowed to question all of this, much less refute or resist. And before there are any more false assumptions, please note that I use the phrase "appear" or "perceived" regarding "white" people. I am not "white", I am not "black", I am not mexican, cuba, bajan, spanish, italian, or any of the other things people have assumed simply from my appearance. I only checked "caucasian" on this site because they still don't have a box for people like me. I am actually a beigish color, but most days I feel purple. | |

| Reverse Discrimination Posted: 5/7/2006 2:44:03 PM | I see where the OP is coming from but its kind of an oxy moron fro Me..I can't explain it.
I can: It started back after the big war. Women were first introduced to the work force during the war. White men ruled the world then, without question. Everyone else, women and any other race besides white, were subservient to us. We dug it. What happened is: Women liked being out of the house. They realized for the first time that they could and would have their own rights. "All men are created =", had just become "all people". At the time of this "revelation"...blacks were still being forced to ride in the back of the bus. "Indians" were still hung or shot for loving a white woman. (don't mess with our women.) Slowly, with legislature passing moral and civil law, they were allowed to become lawyers and hence, politicians arose from the masses. Then all hell broke loose. Being a white male was a bad thing. (I realize that many of you don't remember the 60's and 70's) Political correctness began. Everyone had their "special interest" group. The common link was "de-throne whitey". Idiot laws were passed by greedy morons seeking nothing but re-election and press. "I'll get the support of this faction if I try to push this bill." That is how it happened. It was simply political bullshyt. At which point "bussing" began. And then it was forced political correctness. I have a white friend from Alabama that got bussed to an all black school in the 80's....they kicked his azz about 3 times/week. (I'm not saying that that wouldn't have happened if roles were reversed) Anyway, the reverse discrimination got pukingly sick when they started the thing about having to hire "enough minorities to make the quota". White men that were over qualified, lost employment to people that couldn't flip a fricking burger right....but, they got their job because they were the right sex/color. That is how this came about.
The only "race" that anyone should be concerned about today....Is the "oil baron" race. They are the ones that are crippling the world.

I sorta hope most of her comments are tongue in cheek because if one's gonna assert that they aren't allowed opinions when they've been posting around on the board and NOT getting deleted, it seems very disingenious to me. Her opinions have been posted, yes? So who exactly is stopping her?

| Reverse Discrimination Posted: 5/7/2006 4:52:05 PM | remarks made by Canadians against Americans every day
Which remarks please? The only ones I've seen are ones addressing policies that SOME American's misperceive as being anti-American simply because others are pointing very logical points out.
I don't know how many times I've seen this go on in these forums. But one more time....to criticize American policies does not mean that we are anti-American. If anything its a difference in our socio-political structure. If we Bush bash its because many disagree (including Americans) on the way he has chosen to run your country which has a MAJOR impact on our own therefore I feel free to speak. I think its completely innaccurate to equate this with rednecked racism and am sorry to say, it seems like grasping at straws to prove your point.
My drive was from Nova Scotia to Connecticut. I stopped in many places along the way for gas and food. I'm just telling you what I heard over the space of those two weeks. I worked in employment equity and diversity training for several years so when I see things like this its indicators to me of an inequitable system. There is both a business and social case for diversity...it works.
To do otherwise I feel is an unfair monopoly of power. With the current demographics, "miniorities" in many cases now outnumber the caucasion population. How long do you think it will be that they will tolerate a system that caters to the miniority instead of the majority? Before you point out that is what affirmative action does, you are incorrect. There is a really big difference in getting people to recognize the diverse environments in which they serve and a single miniority enforcing its will and values on a diverse population.
Before you say anything further about jobs you should know that affirmative action policies are designed only to help fill the inequities of an unfair system. Hypothetical situation: If the local available workforce population (those who are able to work in the field) for say black people was only 1.2% the companies hiring goals are set to reflect that. Once they reach their goals in that area they are not required to continue to apply affirmative action hiring policies for that group. So to say you are disadvantaged would have to mean that the local company was going beyond what was fair for that region. I have seen the hiring statistics for many regions of the United States and can assure you, that is not true. Even the companies that do have the right amount of employees to meet their goals fail in the sense that the people are clustered in the lower ranks within that organization.
Canada has a way to go too at this point. Quite often there are still gaps but there are plans in place to fill them by encouraging children in schools and making them aware of opportunities for them in these fields. I'm sure the US has similar plans in place. But the longer people's sense priveledge remains intact, the more difficult these endeavors become. My feeling during my visit was that this sense of entitlement was stronger than it is in Canada. That I will concede is completely based on my own perception.
I have no problems in answering questions or talking with someone regarding their opinions in these areas. Many of the things I hear are complete myths and unfounded rumours regarding affirmative action and I feel good being able to clear those things up. Maybe my, and others reaction to your post, had a lot more to do with the way you did it. Instead of asking you were promoting a point that many find offensive. Its that promotion that got you my response.
I personally find Canada's system of dealing with employment equity more accepting of diversity. I base my opinion on demographic data retrieved from the last census....not on American bashing. If you can provide logical substantiated arguments to refute that, I'd be very open to listen to them.
I apologize if I come off harsh but you have to understand that I have dealt often with the attitude and in my experience its based on a lack of awareness.
P.S. I never even looked at your profile

| Reverse Discrimination Posted: 5/7/2006 5:14:19 PM | delytful - You're 'beigish' and feel 'purple'???? Cool !!!!!!
I think the belief that no white person and/or American citizen wants to do those low-wage, often demeaning jobs is incorrect.
I'm a white person, have done some of those jobs, and occasionally even liked them (except for the pay NO ONE likes the pay.....).
The real reason why they are given to others by the companies and corporations is that they will work for even less, and tend to be easier to 'keep down', especially if they don't speak the language...... Follow the money, and you will find the truth.

I registered as a republican when I turned 18. Against my dad's "independant" registration. He had always said that republicans were the "rich" party. But, Ronald Regan was the guy then. Everyone's grandpa. And he made sense. And he was a good guy in general. Plus, the republican theory was originally about "less government, more personal involvement". I'm still cool with that.

Agreed. As for the not wanting to do the jobs it does relate to the pay quite a bit. Even in Canada, a lot of these jobs used to be considered blue color type jobs. But they've fallen below that now to the point a person can't survive. We just have more of a mixture of people doing those jobs. Same problem just more of a mixture going up the ladder.
I work in jobs I guess you would consider lower to middle middle-class type positions and I can barely survive with the cost of living so can't imagine surviving on what some of these people are bringing in.
I also acknowledge that Canada doesn't seem to have as many issues with illegal immigration which I'm sure has to do with our location more than anything else. Its pretty heart tugging though when you see these companies exploiting these workers the way they are on one hand and waving a flag in the other.
What happens to a company in the US anyway for having an illegal immigrant as an employee? I know the person will get deported but does anything happen to the company that was exploiting them in the first place? If no, to me it would seem to make sense that unless you have consequences for that company, they will continue the behavior which will only encourage the problems.

| Reverse Discrimination Posted: 5/7/2006 10:02:52 PM | I will just say this, ANY kind of discimination is potentially harmful and hurtful to people.
We really should instead try to help one another and if we see someone who is not "like we want them to be" we should embrace them still and not hold it against them and not reject people over certain things because that just proves to be a bad and hurtful to many people.
We al shoudl try to put ourselves in another persons shoes before making a critical comment about them, it is just not right to bash them over soemthing that we may not like that they CANNOT control. This does bother me and it hurts to be honest to see people being put down over stupid things and not treated equally and fairly. If people can only imagine what this can do to others.
i said this before I'll say it again, we all need to have more love in us, and less hatred and more compassion and opennes anmd acceptance and a caring spirit.
So many people would be happier.

| Reverse Discrimination Posted: 5/8/2006 2:58:23 AM | Reverse discrimination comes in many forms. Just learn from each group that has gone through it and over came it. Don't hate the PLAYER, HATE THE GAME. I grew up in an Italian neighborhood. And I was a dark skinned Mexican. Who was left-h and attended an Italian church with Italian nuns who said I was tainted by the devil because I was left handed during my cathicisum classes and on and on. So we moved to another city. We were accepted there. My son was married and my daughter is married to white mixed persons. I also date white men. So, I don't hold it against white people what a few white folks did to me and my family back in the 1960s. And I still attend my mom's catholic church with my 75 y/o mom. Just like the Viet Namese forgave us and now live over here, and the Japanese for gave us and live over here, and the Germans forgave us, and also live over here, and so on and on with other groups of people. Forgive and move forward. Otherwise, you drive you crazy and negative vibes will follow your train of thought. It takes hard work, but, YOU WILL BE A BETTER PERSON FOR IT. OVER COME. | |

| Reverse Discrimination Posted: 5/8/2006 3:50:57 AM | That's actually discriminiation, not reverse discrimination. There actually isn't any such thing as "reverse discrimination" you are either discriminating or you are not.
It was a term adopted by some to express their frustration with affirmative action policies. Those frustrations are often based on myths and senses of entitlement.

| Reverse Discrimination Posted: 5/8/2006 5:36:49 AM | Polly G (cute, btw....:) ) 'Reverse' discrimination is a sort of PC term which stems from the false assumption that only white people can be discriminatory, and refers to discrimination against them by others. (Which I'm sure you knew.....)
I've never heard of anything actually happening to a US company for hiring illegals, it's so prevalent (Wal-Mart does it....), that doing anything about it is pretty unrealistic, there aren't enough courtrooms, jails, whatever from sea to shining sea to hold even a fraction of the offenders.....
All in the name of saving a buck.....

| Reverse Discrimination Posted: 5/8/2006 7:28:48 AM | At 17, walking down Alamo Plaza during my lunch break, I was approached by a black man who stopped me on the street (where I was entering a restaurant) and asked if I would go out with him. I said no. He said, very loudly, that I didn't want to go out with him because he was black. I, also very loudly, said, no - I didn't want to go out with him because I didn't know his name, didn't know anything about him and because he was foolish enough to stop me on the street and make ignorant comments like that.
At the time I registered this encounter as an attempt to pull some kind of reverse discrimination; possibly that definition is wrong... but the implication was clear to me. This young man was accostomed to using his color to intimidate.
|
| Reverse Discrimination Posted: 5/8/2006 9:30:52 AM | ^^ That is a perfect example of what I mean, and have gotten the same attitude and rude, idiotic remarks for saying about the same thing. Always wanting to pull the race card even in situations where it doesn't exist. And for me, since people always mistake me for a nationality I am not, I get racist slams against me of all kinds LOL So I get a pretty good idea of what others have to hear. The meanest and most defensively abusive have always been black men. The last time anyone "white" made a racist remark toward me was when I was about 30 years ago. Loooooooong time ago. "I was tainted by the devil because I was left handed" This is just a perfect example of stupidity, and it does happen. I became Ambidextrous because the teachers forced me to use my right hand. "Where is the all white footbal league and the all white college??? Oh ya, if we did that we would be racist.... racist is, as racist does.. THe most racist folks I have met are not caucaision...." Lux- ok, so you're still pissy about another forum, whatever. Go ahead and try to twist this by implying that I am just referring to this forum instead of what really goes on in society. And Polly, it would take a month of Sundays just to pull them all and repost them for you. Try reading through some other threads on the subject. "I'm just telling you what I heard over the space of those two weeks." Already acknowledged it sounded like a short trip with limited contact. "With the current demographics, "miniorities" in many cases now outnumber the caucasion population." But they still want to claim minority status and get all the benefits associated with that. I also don't understand how it can be called "forcing" anything on others, when they came to the US of their own accord. No one forced them to come here. And before you want to even think of telling me what affirmative action does or not, especially here in the US, I would suggest you work in a politically correct government postion that embraces affirmative action, for a few years, like I did. You will get a clearer view of the reality of it. I could give examples to refute all your claims about lower positions etc. Such as the HEAD of the LEGAL department being black, or the highest ranking employee in the entire department being japanese. As far as kids in school, those who actually do the work, get the good grades, and the scholarships, is the only real FAIR way to go about things. "Instead of asking you were promoting a point that many find offensive. Its that promotion that got you my response." More like your PERCEPTION of what you read. And I don't think you come off as harsh, I just think you have a distorted view of what is really going on, as most people are encouraged to have. A good example is all this propaganda about illegal immigrants being treated so badly and paid so poorly. They came here illegally, and are hiding that, which is why they take these jobs. If they were legal, they would apply elsewhere. Seems to me they are bringing it on themselves by getting themselves into the position by breaking the law in the first place. So what is better, let them work for low wages (and they aren't always as low as people want to make them out to be) or just jail them and leave them in prisons? | |
