| Lilac festival Posted: 5/11/2006 12:40:44 PM | Yeah, I'll tag along. I would like to advise in advance as to some pitfalls though(since I volunteered for this before).
Take your sunscreen. Take bottled water. Wear a hat if you can(last year was a scorcher, imagine all those sunburned scalps). If you have to drive to get there the best parking I found is NW of the SafeWay(it is one end of the festival) in the neighbourhoods.
Lotsa food lotsa bands(well over a dozen) and lotsa eye candy.

| Lilac festival Posted: 5/11/2006 12:53:12 PM | Lots of eye candy for sure..... M.A.: Lilac Festival - Sunday May 28th 2006! Sunday, May 28th, 2006, marks the date of the 17 th annual 4 th Street Lilac Festival, and the streets have never been hotter! In 2005 an estimated 120,000 Calgarians participated in this fabulous one-day festival. They enjoyed the wide array of entertainers that were featured on stages and entertainment zones along 4 th Street in the heart of the Mission district. In addition, they had an opportunity to shop at over 600 craft, food and entertainment vendors along the 13 blocks of the festival. With something for almost everyone to see and do we had participants dancing in the streets to the smooth sounds and scrumptious tastes. Fourth Street is known for it's diverse cultural restaurants - "you can eat around the world on 4 th " - and those restaurants took to the streets that day selling samples of their fabulous menus. | |

| Lilac festival Posted: 5/11/2006 7:56:42 PM | | Not sure where Mission District is. Where along 4th street is it? South or North etc. Sounds like it would be fun. | |
|
| Lilac festival Posted: 5/11/2006 7:59:42 PM | | mission district is along elbow drive I believe; it includes in part 4th st SW where it meets the Elbow River [Elbow Drive]. That's from memory, though I think the City of Calgary and Calgary Transit websites likely show it on their online maps. | |

|
| Lilac festival Posted: 5/12/2006 4:35:10 AM | Its better to go early like 10:30 - 11:00 to avoid the massive crowds for the the first while. Whats a good time for ya'all? I do have Dragon Boat Practice until 11:30 and will need to shower and change because the Glenmore Reservoir is not a pleasant place to be going for a "swim". Would early afternoon like 2 pm work?
~Stone
Or you guys can arrange to go earlier and I ll meet you somewhere.

|
| Lilac festival Posted: 5/12/2006 12:22:03 PM | So this is monster-friendly? In that case, count us in! Wahoo! Time to break in the new wagon! You say it gets busy around the pre-noon time? I think we'll head down early-ish.... anyone else want to go in the morning?
I'm sure my fishie would be okay with spending the day with us Hey, fishie! We're going to the Lilac Festival... wanna come? Prinnie
|
| Lilac festival Posted: 5/12/2006 12:35:27 PM | | its monster friendly but its alot of walking and an insanely huge crowd....earlier is a good idea of you have small monsters...and so is a wagon as i found it to be alot of walking last year...and might have been a bit boring to kids as there isnt anything for them to do really...its more like street vendors and table after table selling unique wares....like wrap skirts...t shirts...jewelry...chimes...that sort of thing...i have no idea if little ones would like that. | |
|
| Lilac festival Posted: 5/12/2006 2:36:26 PM | I took my crew a few years back..
It was an expensive day out.. all there really is to be is watch a bit of entertainment, generally not kiddish and spend cash on booths. I ended up about $200 poorer and my kids came home with all sorts of unique stuff. My girls were cool with it but my son was bored silly and it was hot, and very very crowded so if you're kids are walkers, you might want to consider those hand holder things.. It would be easy to lose a young child down there.

| Lilac festival Posted: 5/13/2006 7:49:54 AM | | I'm gonna be there.. Screwtape Lewis (band I work with) will be playing around 2pm on sunday. | |
|
| Lilac festival Posted: 5/13/2006 8:40:55 AM | | Then I will see you there TCPL^^^ I never miss the Lilac Fest.. I mean.. it is my favorite flower though truly.. it has nothing to do with Lilacs.... *puzzels over this* I will also be bringing a friend or two. | |
|
| Lilac festival Posted: 5/13/2006 9:23:03 AM | mmmmm....lilacs. The place I grew up in, in BC had a 50 foot long lilac hedge. Every spring it would smell up the entire neighbourhood. I do so enjoy the smell of lilacs now, and look forward to the festival. T'is a shame I've developed allergies to the flower, but being surrounded be the wonderful scent again (even for a short time) is worth a day in the hospital. | |
