I rode bikes when I was young when I could handle them. Now we have women in their fourty riding 600 pounds they can't pick up if they lay them down. I don't get it, I think you look like the over the hill gang! To beat that you're getting killed left and right. Did you see Easy Riders to many times or what. To beat that you play follow the leader around the same areas over and over. I live next to the forest where it was quiet, now the weekend sounds like a race track. Can't you find anything better to do than waste gas and and ruin country people's weekends.

Ya.....I wonder to why women get a biggest bloody bike around. I am 45+ and I have bought a bike after not riding for a long time, have it now just one year almost to the day and have put on it over 20,000 in just one year. And NO IT IS NOT A HARLEY....OK... Its a honda shadow 750 and it weights like 500 pounds just one its own, and I know someone that just bought a harley and its 780 pounds...what gives with this...??? I have been told that women like harleys for one main reason..." the vibration "... Personaly I hate that I like smooth ride and most of all quiet one to. I know one women she can not be more then 115 pounds dripping wet out the shower and she bought a huge 800 pounder harley... She can not even pick my bike up off the ground...never mind a harley. I am not thin or weak by any means..but I think I would have a hard enough time picking a harley up from its side. So for some 115 pound tooth pick thin chick to pick it up....well impossible. And when its not a harley then its some rocket bike that goes 0 to 200 in a heart beat.

I bought my bike to save on gas and to do a little traveling with....the guy I know that has the harley....we went out and OH..MY..GOD..! My car " Volvo " uses less gas then that huge pig of a bike....whats the point in having a bike then. My bike...64 miles to the gallon give or take 2 miles per gallon.

First, I love my new Shadow 750. I'm 55, male, and I bought my bike for the same reasons, save gas, and cruise on the weekend. Riding around the same places is a compliment to the area, scenery, friendly restaurants, etc. There are only so many nice rides in any given area. Who wants to spend a day on the highway?
Second, I know women who ride, all sizes of bikes. There's a trick to picking one up. Don't face the bike, put your back to it and use your legs to lift it. I've seen a 120 lb woman stand up a Goldwing this way on a bet. It's not easy, but it works.
I do agree with you about the noise, although there is some merit to the concept that a noisy bike is safer. Personally, I like the look of the stock pipes and the smooth sound of my Honda.

NO maybe about it, they are a awesome bunch..
Bikers are a different breed and I just love them..

yes, we hear those stories ..some are good, some are very bad

here's another heartwarming story from another side:

http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20060412/kellestine_background_060412/20060413/

Wayne Kellestine..

the 'charming', 'roguish' biker who had a fit of paranoia and "offed" 8 (that's eight) of his 'bros' last summer (2006), & buried them on his farm.

Essentially the bike is a good matching accessory for their now blurry and stretching tattoos, the whole ensemble being bait for the bad boys. See the billion threads on bad boys for more information. Yes, that whole Kellestine thing was quite the "selling point" for biker culture wasn't it?

Ever really think??? It has been years since I was on a bike! My dad had one, and actually had one with a side car for me! Burnt my hands on the shiney pipes! OUCH! And my husband had one....and now I can afford one! So I am doing the course and getting into something I grew up with. Sooooo for me its a matter of priotities.....first family, home, kids...and now ME! and my dreams......probably (if I can find one) Virago....or I really like the V Star Classic 750...fits me to a T, and I can manuver it too! AND I do not give a damn what I look like! I will be enjoying myself.
Of course there is the safety factor. An aquaintance of mine, Ester McGuire here in Paris lost control of her bike, and slide under a truck.....RIP Ester. She died as a result of her injuries a couple of weeks ago...and yes it shook me up, but I am goal driven.

Have 5 very close friends, and of those 4 ride. We are looking forward to doing it together. So, hope this helps you understand the feelings and emotions behind this.

I found most of the responses pretty funny. I'm not sure who decides when someone is over the hill and if you're not over the hill are you under it? I'm about to buy a Harley and the reasoning is, they depreciate much slower than the other bikes out there, I like the look of them, and its my money. I guess if you don't like it, don't look.

at Msg #4 ,try a little sensitivity (and intelligent information) next time, Sugah... one of the 'bros' as you put it, was a guy from POF! And there are many folks here who think quiet a bit of him. Also at Msg #4 AND 5 your callous treatment of such tradegy not only belittles his death, but maligns the rest of us who ride ... ...

^^

please inform me as to the 'sensitivity' & 'intelligent information' that should apply ?

what is the intelligent info? that this never really happened, all faked by the cops, right?

why should I be 'sensitive' about this occurence? does that mean pretending it never happened?

apparently, 's' daddy needs it spelled out folks... hmmmm... gee... could it possibly be sensitivity to the fact that this was a person who 's life was suddenly ended by murder??? that this guy has family and friends who mourn his death and miss him terribly... that you were cruel enough to mock a man's death to an online community of his friends? let's see now... can you read my lips??? ... must obviously be the reason you're single....

Personally, I don't think riding motorbikes has any age limitations. I have been riding since I can remember, have three bikes in the garage now (sorry, never had a Harley and never will) and hope to be riding well into my old age. If a person is in control of the machine and cognizant of peripheral circumstances then I say ride on irregardless of age and choice of steed.

My greatest question for those Harley riders new to the sport of biking is: why no protection? (and the answer: just is not cool). I came back from a 700 mile trip last weekend and passed a train of Harley riders some of whom had brain buckets but NOT ONE had on leathers or protective clothing. Outfit of choice: shorts and tanktops!!! (I think one pillion even had on flip-flops). That just baffles my mind (knowing what road grit feels like on skin at a mere 20 mph let alone 65). Ride in Europe like that and they take your bike.

But I guess this is a totally different arguement than what was presented (but by all means feel free to defend your cases). Personally, I think that HD has done a stellar job at boomer advertising and we should all applaude their efforts.

Re: Msg 11... I agree totally that regardless of age and choice of steed it is, indeed, the skill and control you have (even at the mercy of cages)... but I do NOT agree that Harley riders don't wear protection... wrong, my friend... maybe not helmets (likely in NH and other states), but you'd never catch me... ever... in shorts or flip flops or sneakers on a bike .. nope! Please don't group the newbee, wannabee, yupiebee, posers with the old skool bikers.... tks...

live2...

Excellent response and plenty of apologies for the wide cast of my net (I should have highlighted the "new" HD riders stated in my post). Yes, most of HD riders I have approached on the road who have on full leathers seem to have been riding for a long time (I don't talk to the posers). But, you have to admit, they seem to be becoming more and more of a minority these days.

It is an interesting social phenomena to think about, choosing to be naked (present company excluded) on a machine capable of totally screwing up your body in a split second. Do you think any "new" riders realize this, or are they so blinded by the hype/status/playground mentality that it could "never happen to them"?

I say one easy slide down the rumble strip and another bike will be on the market, which by the way, will do wonders for "holding the value of HD".

hi non... tks... new riders (as I've said many times before - age and gender excluded - make two fatal mistakes)... either 'never happen to them' or 'lose your confidence for a split second (mostly folks who ask me about getting their bike license - I tell them to take a mc safety class) and always, always, drive defensively... most cages never know you're there... protective gear or not...

I am a 48 women who rides a Harley. I wouldn't give it up for anything.
If I was ever to lay it down (which I hope to hell never happens) it would be a struggle to pick it up but it can be done (not that I want to ever try).
I love the wind in my face/hair as I go down the highway. To me there is nothing better than this.
Sure my kids worry everytime I go out but I have told them this: Just remember if mom doesn't come home that I died happy and doing something that I love so very much.
I have friends of all ages that ride and I don't think any of us look silly or too old.
Besides age is just a number. It's how you feel on the inside and personally I don't feel any older than I did when I was 25.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Ride Safe Everyone

PS: in response to msg 11 I beleive....I wouldn't be caught dead on my bike in shorts and tank top and those that do are asking for trouble. I think it should be mantory for at least jeans and full tops if not leather.

Well Junior, the deal is that most of us are poor and can not afford to buy a harley until we are over the hill. Now we have the cash and time to enjoy it we spend it any damn way we want... Even if that means buying a harley or a vette.
Don't worry someday you will catch up and understand, that is if you live that long...

I guess the roads are big enough for us old bags as you claim we are. I guess its a good thing we live in America where we can ride as long as we please no matter the age or gender. Sorry about ruining your weekends but it makes mine very nice.

I'm 52 and have found that most men in my age range (46 to 56, roughly) are Harley riders/owners. Maybe this site should be called Plenty of Harley Dudes...
and just for the record, I have nothing against Harley riders but I'm not interested in riding on the back of one, for safety reasons.

I sold my Harley 3 years ago, along with my VW trike. A 4 wheeler accident convinced me I wasn't invincible.

growing up in an MC and now have a club im in the top ranks of....we actually get approached by alot of the older riders and some are yuppie retirees who havent a clue or by the middle age guys who swear that they are badasses for having the cash for a 07-09 hd, then show up exactly as said no riding gear, we school them real quick and let the real old school riders teach em how you ride safe and come home from the road.

now ive said my 2 pesos...i admire the old school riders, they have the road knowledge and laid back attitude needed for living outlaw.

A simple reply to an otherwise dumb question.

People as why we ride a Motorcycle. For those who have experienced the joy, no explanation is necessary; for those who have not, no explanation is possible.
