Act Your Age?? What the heck does that mean???
Posted: 5/24/2006 8:21:34 PM
OK, I have posted on here in numerous threads and occasionally have been told by others (some much younger than me, others as old or older, also by friends who are not on this site) that I should act my age since guys my age are not supposed to be into the Goth Scene and other things I am into. Well, I have no friggin idea HOW to act my age. What is my age supposed to act like? I am 55 years old for cryin out loud. I am myself. Should I be out learning golf and wearing ugly knee shorts and white knee sox and ugly sandals and that stupid golf hat? Or maybe I should be wearing Dockers and polo shirts or Cargo Pants and sports shirts… If you read my interests, yeah, most guys my age do not like the same thing, but that is them. Am I supposed to suddenly act like they do? And exactly how is that? I am very confused…

Most women younger do not want older guys, women my age want younger guys... boy things suck when you get older... LOL... I am having trouble-finding women who share my interests but then, my interests are those of much younger guys. While I do like some stuff that women my age enjoy, most of the things they like are very dissimilar.

I mean "Travel, movies, conservation, C&W music, dining, arts and crafts, boating, classic rock, some jazz, some country, the standards, antiquing, Biking (as in bicycles not motor), board games, romance, gardening, looking for a soul mate, needlepoint, dancing (old people dancing not younger people dancing), starbucks, cooking and reading, walking, swimming, lounging in the sun, singing, hanging out with my friends and spending time with my kids, etc” just doesn’t cut it…

I have yet to find but one or two women my age who are even remotely close to liking what I like and even they only like some of the things I do. Doomed I tell you… I am doomed ROFLMAO…

Anyway, just frustrated and trying to figure out all this relationship crap…and figureing out why women think I am not acting my age and are not particularly interested in trying me out for a road test... Help....

When someone says act your age they are really saying you should behave like I think you should. Ignore them, maybe they will go away.

so... act my age? like get a haircut and some sensible shoes? No way!
I think I'll go put on some heavy metal and bang my head.
I've never been a conformist and I'm not about to start now just because of
some norms society seems to think I need to fit into at 50 years young.

A suggestion, there is an area here where people give a critique of your profile. that could be an option for you. I was reading your profile and seemed to have made some conclusions but I dont feel they are to your benifit. Dont' give up Your wading in the shallow end of the pool.

Age is only relative in you're mind.

It's significance is meaningless when you consider, time only exists in the present.

There is no past, no future,............only the time being 'now'.

So you're spirit lives in the 'now',...... always has...... always will.

So long as you act even slightly differently to accepted conventions for people of your age
you will be told the same thing

My Kids worry about me
That is bloody AWESOME

Too many people have forgotten how long we will probably live
They reach 30 and settle for mediocrity, forgetting what adrenalin tastes like

We don't have to do that
We can do whatever we like

Act your age.......hmmmmm/ Where is the manual? Why wasn't I given one at birth? Who decides what is "right" at any given age? I'm so confused now.

25 years ago, I was busy living and didn't have time to get married, have 2.5 children and go $65,000 in debt on a home. could it be that that's where I messed up?

Think it stems from growing up when we first hear "act your age" from our parents. I'm still trying to figure out what they meant.

Too old for heavy metal, too old for rock, too old to talk about sex, too old for long hair, too old for this and too old for that. I don't think so. I always ask 'em to define old.

That green thing in the back of the fridge???? Now that's too old. Me?? I'm neither green, nor do I hang out in refrigerators. I might hang out in a pool hall, preferably one that has no country on the juke box. Yes, I garden and do various needlework, but I did those things at 20, so I don't consider them "old" just hobbies I've had for a long time.

Too old.......sheesh, people need their own lives so they can stay out of mine.

Ooooooh yeah . . . Dontcha just hate judgemental people who judge folks by their standards!
If I'm told to act my age, I just know those youngsters are going to have a very boring mediocre kinda life when they get to my age - or they'll realise how wrong they were and have to eat their words.
Act my age?
No thanks - that's no fun at all

Act your age????? To a degree, yeah, but, what's the good of being an adult if you can't be a kid every so often. I've tried to never lose that part of a child that is in awe of everything that goes on. I still will just stop everything to look at a "neat" bug, or still will stand in awe at watching geese fly over head. Many people, when they become adults, don't look around them any more. Hence the phrase, stop and smell the roses.

I hope I never lose the ability to stop and say "Wow, would you look at that!?"

Just me, though.

My kids used to tell me to grow up until I told them I have grown up as much as I ever want to be. They are all over the age of 18 now and have told me they wouldn't want me to change for anything. The way I see this whole "act your age" BS is "CONTROL". Sorry folks, I walk my own path and live my own life. If anyone is offended by that, well then walk the other way, thank you, have a nice day.

I have no idea what "Act your age" means. How does a 60-year-old act his age? By playing bingo at the senior center?

I am still healthy, am still interested in the things I've always been interested in (computers and music), still can shake my butt on a dance floor, still listen to the Stones and the Who and Led Zep. If you look at pics of me taken 20-30 years ago, there is not much different except my hair color and the fact that I've gained weight, same t-shirts, same jeans, same running shoes or sandals, same eye glasses (no more black rims, though, thank your favorite deity).

So far as I'm concerned, this is how a 60-year-old is supposed to be. Ain't dead yet.

It's your age, so you get to decide. The best part about being a grown-up is not having someone else dictate what is "appropriate."

Well, I did go to one site's Profile review (Not POF) and was told that if I wanted to find a woman I needed to get rid of all the things I had, and put down that I enjoyed holding hands, long walks in the moonlight, looking for a long term relationship, love cuddling, etc etc. All the stuff that you see in the cookie cutter ads many guys have used. I added a couple of the things to my profile, but for the most part, I prefer to be me and tell it like it is. Why lie or stretch the truth. Sooner or later, the woman who responds is gonna find out who and what I am looking for so why not stop her from wasting her and my time.

Also, it was not just places where I had my profile posted that people have told me to act my age, this is even on Non-Dating sites. And on the other Single Forums, I also get sometimes, "Well, only women a lot younger like the things you do, so don't plan on finding anyone your age. Now if you liked things older people do....." I also have a Email Buddy I have been talking to for 6 years, who told me that she thought I needed to act my age????

When my second son was 18, his friends thought I was cool because of my long hair, beard and I listened to heavy metal and hard rock and dressed cool (like they did)... Heck I have ALWAYS listened to the harder music...when most kids my age were listening to the Beatles, I was listening to the Stones and Zepplin... The Beatles only had a few good songs I liked and that was after they started doing drugs ROFL... LOL I was the only kid in school who had a Nehru Jacket and wore a huge Peace necklace. And you should have seen their faces when I did my oral term paper on how I wanted to be a Hell's Angel and then gave a Review of Hunter Thompson's "Hells Angels" LOL

I like the way I am. Does it limit my "possibilities"? Oh heck yeah, but I am a realist. I know it will be somewhere between hard to impossible to find someone who is my female reflection. I am ok with that... It would be nice to have one, But I do NOT have to have a intimate relationship with a woman in my life... I have a bunch of women friends I hang out with so...

I think it means your not supposed to do anything that is fun. Not unless you're acting immature like a child throwing a tantrum its a dumb expression. I still like the same things I liked when I was a lot younger. I've been building scale plastic model cars since I was a kid. I also race radio control cars (that wasn't even around when I was a kid). But those are two hobbies of mine that have a stigma of being for kids. But they are for adults and on a higher level (skill and $$$). There are far more adults in those hobbies than there are kids. I like muscle cars, sports cars, custom cars not old folks cars like Buicks. When I reach 80 I still won't drive a Buick. I just bought an '06 Dodge Magnum R/T withe a 340 hp V8, something I missed out on when I was young. Basically a cool looking car with balls, although I'm single it makes a good family car too. It's just not stodgy, that's the point as far as this "act your age" BS is concerned.

I still like science fiction, action/adventure movies too. I listen to classic rock which was current when I was in my teens and college. I still drink chocolate milk, never liked plain milk.

I know how old I am chronologically, but my brain tells me something else. I don't feel my
age, therefore, I don't act my age (however that is I'm supposed to act). Mind you though
my body also lets me know how old I am, don't have the stamina I used to ( I'm talking
about physical stuff and not what some of you may be thinking ). But to get back to the
original thread, I say to hell with those nay sayers and do what feels good to you.

I just realized something, we are acting our ages. Those other people are just cranky because we aren't acting their perception of our ages. Nor are we acting their age.

dude, I haven't a clue they mean. But I can tell you that I'm 45 and I often feel the same as you. I am who I am. I am willing to grow (and want to), but not conform. I love metal, beer, sex, exercise, the outdoors... pretty much everything I did when I was 18, only now I have a degree and a job and party in the time that's left over. WTF is appropriate action for 'my age"?? I don't know. Few head bangers left like me, but that's their choice. I get off on the hard stuff, they get off on Lyle Lovett, whatever. I try to live and let live. But I am frustrated by the same thing that you are. I like having a part of me that loves roller coasters and cartoons (old ones like Underdog, Speed Racer, Popeye, Marine Boy, "AstroBoy"), so that makes me .......what?... Me, I guess. To thine own self be true is a favorite saying of mine. As long as we ain't hurt'in anybody, "Party On Wayne"! As Jimi Hendrix said, "I'm the one who has to die when it's my turn to die, so let me live my life the way I want to."
