ok, who knows something about window a/c???? Help a lady out!Page 1 of 2    (1, 2)
Alright, here is the deal....I got an air conditioner today, brand new and Im so freakin happy!!!

My little dilemma is...how long does the friggin thing take to cool down the joint!..When i first turned it on, the temp read 90, and after like 2 hours, its only at 86...

do i leave it on all night, blowing frantically or should i turn off the fan???... i know, i sound dumb, but its like midnight and im hot as hell!

thank you!

Is there a hidden temperature setting on it? Some units have odd ways to set the temp.. I would guess that you re-read the instructions.

Personally I would leave it on all night, and if in the morning it is not cooled down the home take it back. It really should be blowing out cold enough air to cool things off more then you have stated in the time you stated. Two hours should be long enough to cool the area off by around 10 degrees from what I have come across.

If you have an much larger area then the unit is recommended for then it will not cool things of that fast. Double check the information on the box as well as the instructions. I've seen units that have a scale on the box for cool/time estamation.

Sorry for any spelling errors I'm dyslexic and proud... :D

Hey,

How big is the air conditioner in BTU and how big is the room(s) your trying to cool? If you just installed it and provided its adequate for the area your doing I would leave it running all night so they it will be cold for tomorrow.

Cheers!

its 8000BTU....and it was like a sauna...I have it on the main floor and i can tell that the humidity in here has totally decreased and it is blowing cold air out. The size is like an average townhouse, decent sized but in no way is it huge.

make sure all the windows are closed the thing is with humidity it may take a day or so to just suck it out out your place.... close your blinds or curtins as so the sun does not heat the air inside your home.... you should be good by the morning... if not then you need to go to play B... a bigger unit..

Hey,

8000 BTU is rated to 350 SQF MAX. I would say your A/C is just underpowered for your home since I'm sure a townhouse is over 1000 Sqf. To maximize its effectiveness I would put it on an upper floor since cold air naturally sinks. Also if its on the main floor it will definitely not be able to cool anything on an upper floor.

Good luck

Thank you Jeff....it seems to be cooling down. Im not concerned really with the upstairs as the fans do just fine in the bedrooms, but i did know that cooler air sinks. I just wanted the main floor to cool down and it has decreased by about 10 degrees...so we will see in the morning. If not, then I will have to upgrade. Im going to buy a second one anyway, so I would just get a more powerful one for the main and move this one upstairs, but thank you for your imput. I was just getting discouraged cause im impatient and wanted my house cold in an hour....

Close the doors upstairs if you haven't already and if you have fans, have them help you out with the air direction. Personally I find ceiling fans are a marvellous invention.

Keep the blinds closed and your house a bit dark at first, that will help. Also, it's a window a/c, it will take some time, it's trying to cool off your entire house because its all open, it's got a lot of area to cover, so it will be a while (maybe couple days) before you feel it really cool off.

ahhhh, thats where you are wrong there my dear friend!!!... yes, its not at there and I am GREAT with the heat and sun, but coming into my 'sauna' is a bit much and my kids werent sleeping well.

OK, so its morning and the temp now reads 73 and its pretty comfy, so I guess its working!!..mind you I slept on the couch, still have to go upstairs and get the kids outta bed, Ill notice the difference then.

That you will Ceil darlin! And Jeff was totally correct! Depends on how much of an area you are trying to cool..remember that hot air rises....so the kids may be hotter than a tomale! I have central air thank God...could not get by without it...but that is cuz I am an old bag who needs her comfort in my final years!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you air condition it's not just the air you have to cool but everything else in the rooms. furniture, appliances, walls, floors etc as well. That takes a lot of time and energy.

Turn off any heat making things like lights, appliances, tv, computers. etc. You don't notice them in the winter but in the summer you will feel the heat pour off of them.

Air conditioners work best at night not in the heat of day (simple physics of heat transfer). Try running it mostly at night and allow the room to get warmer in the daytime.

Major yo-yo usage however will not help. Just running it full blast for a short time and then letting the heat rise to max for a day and then tryng to blast it cold again will not make it any cheaper to operate.

Keep all doors to unused rooms closed that way you won't be cooling them when you don't need to.

Air conditioners work best when placed in the hottest areas of the house. Hot air rises and cool air sinks so by removing the hot air and not over cooling colder air you will find it works more effectively. If you have ceiling fans they work wonders. Also on some furnaces you can set the furnace fan to run at a slow speed to move the cool air around - especially cool air from a basement. Turning off your furnace pilot light helps a lot as well.

Hey,

Ya I didn't mean to insult you with the cold air sinking comment its just some people don't think about it. The downside to using an undersized A/C is that it will run like mad and be extremely expensive. There are downsides to to big as well in that it will constantly start/stop and never keep a stable temp.

Cheers

I used to have a small house (900 sq ft) I cheated by putting my window airconditioner in the basement window right by my furnace and turning the furnace fan on --- Red Neck Central Air is what I called it
Mind you, it wasn't a two storey house so the air didn't have far to go. When it's not super humid I will often just run the furnace fan to circulate the cooler basement air through the house. I have to have the central air on when it's humid because I have asthma and not being able to breathe is apparently bad for your health!

What ?? 8000 btu air conditioner !
Oh heck you got a baby one then.
Well that little fellow will take 24 hours to cool your place down .

So just leave it running after you have set the temp dial.
As being only 8000 btu's that type is a one room a/c unit and to cool the entire house down that wil take at least 24 hrs and maybe longer .
Now what you can do is get another one of the same size and put it up stairs and that way th two units will cool the house faster ! But still looking at 24 hrs though

I don't think that an apartment building will have an issue with window units. My building allows one per unit. If you add another one, they have reserved the right to charge an extra $50 a month from July to September.

I have tinfoil on my windows - shiny side out - to block the sun. Keeps my place 4-5 degrees cooler (I don't have an AC yet this year - had to ditch the old one cause it was too big).

Even with the AC - I keep foil on the windows - just helps - and the AC doesn't have to work so hard. Also - it will take longer due to the humidity we have had.

I would get a big square fan too - place it somewhere in the room that is out of the way and have it blow the air from around the AC out to the rest of the floor.

Also - perhaps think about getting a ceiling fan to help with the air flow.

I had the same thing with mine but found out that I didn't have it set right. It has a digital display and there were two options: one was fan and the other was cool and I had it on the fan one. Once I changed it to cool it was great.
