| Ikea to charge for plastic bags Posted: 6/4/2006 11:18:33 AM | Taking a tip from trappedonbayst:
Ikea is to become the UK's first major retailer to regularly charge customers for plastic bags, to try and tackle waste and environmental damage. The Swedish firm will charge shoppers 5p for every bag with immediate effect, rising to 10p in September.

| Ikea to charge for plastic bags Posted: 6/4/2006 11:34:59 AM | What they should do is use paper bags at least they are more enviromentally friendly they used to a few years ago,now i dare say its some what inconvient having to use paper bags no handles but at least they dont come and made from oil and they decay a lot quicker than plastic | |

| Ikea to charge for plastic bags Posted: 6/4/2006 11:42:19 AM | | What will happen if the other retailers follow suit, is that more bin liner will be manufactired from the same material to make up for the lost bags.. only losers will be the public, who will have to pay for the bin liners.. which end up in the recyling bin anyway.. ... so much more work for the lady of the house.. it takes me ages to sort out the recycling into different.... plastic Tesco/sainbsury's/Ikea/ bags /........... So i'm nmot sure why they are really bothering.. maybe if the manufacturers cut out on the fancy packaging they use, have you ever tried getting into one of those blister packs in a hurry! | |

| Ikea to charge for plastic bags Posted: 6/4/2006 11:57:38 AM | That is awesome! It takes something like this to make people aware of how wastful we can be. Sure, one single plastic bag may not seem much but it adds up in the average household that goes to the store once a week. Although I do recycle them already by using them to line my smaller wastecans with. PS I live the US. Oh this is in the UK where they are doing this. Darn why can't the US be an example and do something nifty like this? grr | |

Bin liners? I guess I just have an odd mind but I've just had this vision of ML following her pet elephant around with a shovel and a bin bag. I wouldn't want to meet your dog!
OT plastic bags comprise a surprisingly high proportion of litter and landfill waste. When they taxed them in Ireland people discovered they could manage with 5% of the bags they'd been using before. I think everywhere should charge for them. | |

| Ikea to charge for plastic bags Posted: 6/4/2006 1:13:28 PM | | This won't affect me really as I have bought 2/3 of the big blue bags, so when I go to Ikea I just take them along with me. Plus they are excellent for putting all the ironing in in the meantime | |
