But it was the best money I ever spent and I got both kids in the end, so it was all worth it. | |

personally as a single mom it shouldnt be about the price of the attorny or the paperwork it shoudl be about who is the better parent and who is more able to raise the kids and who is willing enough and loves their kids enough to raise them.
I agree 100%, it just tends to be an uphill battle if you're a guy and expensive.
My ex was going to (and did after she lost custody) move overseas, I was the non custodial dad with the weekend visitation, yet I'd had the child ~50% of the time for 2 years & provided the bulk of her needs (Dr's visits, teacher meetings etc). | |

We have joint custody, with liberal visitation. The kids live full time with me. Our split is amicable.
My sympathies to all you out there that have to pay thousands of dollars to get divorced and custody of any kind. I can not imagine why two adults would use kids in that fashion. And shame on the court systems to keep on presuming that the MOTHER is always the best one to give custody to in the first place. Just because the female gave birth does not make her the best choice. In the same vein, just because the male donated sperm does not make him the best choice. Heck, one could argue forever the intricacies of which parent is best. It doesn't matter to the child. People should be nice when the marriage fails (unless for the obvious reasons--abuse, substance abuse, etc...). I am talking about regular old IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES.
Anyhow, soapbox aside, where I live it cost $2 to get the marriage license, and 24 hours later, married. To have to spend 300 times that amount to get out of a dead marriage is ridiculous. Thank God we can do an agreement, so the court has no more say-so than necessary.

they knew at the time it was impossible for me to get custody
so along the way people volunteer to help,i even got children services to help
with them on your side no one can beat them cause the judge will listen to them
before they listen to anyone else
on Dec 17,1993 when i walked out of the courtroom with full custody of my 5 children people saw the impossible was possible,for i didn't give up no matter how many times i tried nor did i listen to people when they told me it was impossible to do
you know it is bad when you find a lawyer to take you case.the first time you meet her she gives you a 50-50 chance of losing.but she found out that miracles do come true.for the past 13 years i have been living that miracle
 i would not trade it for nothing in the world and if i had to do it all over again i would do it in a heart beat | |

Posted: 6/14/2006 2:54:55 PM | Guess I was really lucky. $850.00 U.S. dollars total, for attorney costs and court fees, for full custody. Of course that was in 1991, so I'd have no idea what current costs would be.
But damn, it's great being a full-time dad. | |

Posted: 6/14/2006 6:20:18 PM | I live in a state where joint custody is almost automatic, unless you can offer a reason why it wouldn't be advised. Joint custody also means making decisions together. Didn't go to court even. My ex is very emotionally abusive and controlling. It cost me almost $50 K to avoid joint decision-making with a diagnosed narcassist. And, if you know anything about narcassists, they don't believe they're sick, and they don't believe anybody could have a worthwhile opinion if it differs from theirs. They argue just to hear themselves say brillliant and witty things.
Only reason I posted this, is because it seems like it could be a similar, contentious, scenario. I have my kids 70% of the time, and have the final say in all decisions (after I take his great ideas into consideration.) | |

Posted: 6/14/2006 7:01:45 PM | I Guess I would have to say I am 1 of the Luckiest Dads on the face of the Earth. My Ex had my kids from day of split, for first 3 years ( I paid my $500 a month Child Support ) and and one day out of the Blue, I got a Summons to appear in Court.
In court a Judge gave me Custody of my Daughter and Step-son who is the Child of My Ex-wife and her Ex from years gone by. I signed papers with C.A.S. and courts and took the kids home.
I should note however; Ex was $28,400 in Debt at the time kids came home with her lavish lifestyle and cant claim bankruptcy on any of it ( Goverment Money ) In the end with Debt's she has - She gets Visitation first Saturday of a month over night only. Noon to Noon.
I Feel I lucked out in the end. | |

I know for the most part men have had the short end of the stick but lawyers could care LESS who the kids are going to they all just want the money!!!! BTW atleast my lawyer was "kind" enough to let me drive around the block a couple of times the brand new Corvette I paid for!

Now if only the courts would look at it that way instead of stealing every last penny they can from a parent who is already struggling financially to provide their children with day-to-day needs. But the courts don't really give a shit about who the better parent is so long as you're paying. | |

Went through 8 attornies in three years. Don't piss in my face and charge me 175-250 hour. I Personally petitioned the Highest Judge in the State ,Judge Bell to have Judge Joseph Kaplan retired Judge sit on MY case becuse it took 14 months for a trial because DSS grabbed my daughter when wife was arrested.AFTER ...yes AFTER "I" petitioned for custody.
Liquidated a saw mill, Sweet 57 Chevy, Front End loader, 79 KZLTD1000, 1973 Z1900, and a paid for 3 y.o. saturan.......All at below market value.
Lawyers, Investgators and all that other B.S. Paper work you write checks for as you are going along ...Lost count around $85,000 ( less then $95,000 though). Folks kicked in about $20,000. They refuse to tell how much.
Never touched a $350,000 house thats has 27-28K owed to bank, and sitting on about another 175-200K in assests So I am so F'in blessed. I won't cry...It's just money, can't take it with you.
My heart goes to the guys that don't have the resourses to fight in this womens arena.
I would have fought and liquidated right down to the price of a box of shotgun shells.
POF still reading.....Here's the kicker.....I wasn't fighting my wife. I was fighting the STATE Only.
In closing.... all you parents out there that might be reading this thread with family matters in rough waters.... If I can tell you anything.....Add up the money on this thread that lined lawyers pockets.......STAY out of the courts....period.

Whodeletedme, you got me beat, but I think every dad in here feels the same, money wasnt important, Our children are worth more than any posession we may ever own. My hat is off to all the dads out there who step up and are men instead of dumping their kids off on the ex and living selfishly. being a full time dad is one of the biggest challenges I have ever faced. | |
