| emailing others. Posted: 6/16/2006 5:05:26 AM | The best thing to do i find is to tell them what caught you're attention in their profile, it's a good starting point. Hopefully it leads to them reading you're profile and emailing back!
if that doesn't work, resort to the naked pictures.........lol
|
| emailing others. Posted: 6/16/2006 6:43:45 AM | more suggestions people ... lol i have the same problem ... i have a ton to say ... just never know where to start | |
|
| emailing others. Posted: 6/16/2006 7:03:25 AM | Okay, seriously folks....
When I send out emails, I normally ask questions about something that is in their profile, or mentioning that there is something that we would have in common. It shows that you actually read the profile (VERY IMPORTANT to do!), and that there is a reason they may wish to communicate back...
If you are going to be brave/outgoing/gutsy/confident enough to communicate with someone, actually start by COMMUNICATING! Oh, if you do not have a pic in your profile, you gotta give a reason for them to write back. So, if your profile says "prefer not to say" for most things, as well as "I am no good at this stuff, just ask me", you will get very few responses to your emails, let alone very few initial contacts. Consider your initial profile to be your "resume", and the emails you send out to be the "cover letter".
Other little pointer.. okay, BIG pointer -- SPELL CHECK, PEOPLE!!! If you are a poor (read: horrendous) speller, do your profile in MS Word or some other word processing program that has spell check, and then cut and paste it into POF. I have done the old "Read/Deleted" thing to a number of different emails that, basically, made me read through three times before being able to figure out what was said. Yes, it makes a difference. I'll go back to the cover letter comparison -- remember, good first impressions!
alright, that was my two-cents worth... (hey, why is it that I give my two-cents worth, but it's said to be a "penny for your thoughts"? where did the other penny go?!?)

| emailing others. Posted: 6/16/2006 7:09:31 AM | | I usually make sure to say something along the lines of "Check out my profile and get back to me if you're interested in chatting" as well... avoids any of the 'oh ... you have a kid?? I dont like kids' later on... PET PEEVE: Dont msg me and say 'wanna chat' cause you like my pic and then obviously know nothing about me - even simple things like my age, location, or the fact that I have a child. Also... The spell checker thing is def good advice LOL | |
|
| emailing others. Posted: 6/16/2006 8:01:39 AM | Personally, if someone was to send an e-mail to me, there's two things that drive me nuts:
1) Ridiculously short, one-liner e-mails that give me nothing to work with. 2) Profiles that only say things like "Ask me" or something.
Neither of those give me ANYTHING to work with. So, I would say, at least ask a question, bring up a subject to talk about. Something.

God DZ .. Good thing I don't talk to you much .. or that you don't stop talking to guys that can't spell.. My spelling is so bad even spell checker says WTF!
|
| emailing others. Posted: 6/16/2006 3:15:34 PM | when i would email someone.. (not anymore)...but when i did.. i usually went with the compliment like Catch a Star said
subject... "i just wanted to say....." email... "that you have a great smile. ;) check out my profile, if you want to chat... "
or basically tell them WHAT in their profile caught my eye. have to say something that they can respond to
email... "hey.. i noticed in your profile that you love to ski.. so do i!! did you make any trips this year??"
and leave it at that.. short and sweet.
|
| emailing others. Posted: 6/17/2006 2:11:20 AM | I prefer to send them tips on things like skinning kangaroos, or fishing with tennis rackets.
These tips not only let them know of your existence, but also teach survival skills for life.
|
| emailing others. Posted: 6/17/2006 7:46:08 AM | say in email excetly what you would say in person nothing more nothing less honesty is key | |

| emailing others. Posted: 6/17/2006 11:36:59 AM | biggest pet peeve after getting emails...is when you get the ones that say my msn is blah blah blah, so you add them, then realize they never read your profile at all, and use "brb" as an excuse to get out of the conversation 30 seconds into talking, usually durring those 30 seconds is when they find out i have 2 kids and no longer want to talk, and after putting brb dont ever come back.
word of advice, if you dont wish to talk to people with kids the "have kids" part in the profile might be a pretty good indication that they "have" kids, so if you read the profiles first you could save yourself alot of wasted time., not to mention wasting the people who try to talk to's time as well.
|
| emailing others. Posted: 6/17/2006 12:22:16 PM | i never add anyone to my msn that emails me and says "here's my msn, lets chat" i wouldn't add just anyone to my msn.
i usually write them back and say "why?? what makes you different from all the others that say hi. lets chat. c'mon buddy... don't be so lame" LOL... but that's just me.
Red, maybe you wouldn't want to say it that way.... but email them back and say.. well have you even read my profile? cause that will save you time and hopefully get them to read it then if they are still interested in talking great! :)
it's not usually until a few emails back and forth and that i get a feel for a person to i consider adding them. i agree it's easier to talk to someone on msn.. but a lot of them on here are morons. (girls and guys.. i'm not discriminating.. LOL)
emails should give you a bit of insight into what you/they want.. and if there are common interests... well then go from there.
;) | |
|
| emailing others. Posted: 6/17/2006 12:30:11 PM | | i read their profiles before i add them on, and it sometimes is after a few emails, but i'm still shocked at how many seem to know literally nothing about me once they finally do get added onto msn, and even more surprized at how many dissapear at the mention of kids even though my profile clearly states that i have 2 of them. | |
|
| emailing others. Posted: 6/17/2006 12:39:32 PM | yeah Red, i agree.. it is pretty shitty when that happens. and yeah it will still happen after a few emails.. i just thought maybe it would cut down on it happening. lol. guess not.
people get lazy and don't want to read. sad really.
i admit, i used to be one of those people that stayed away from guys with kids... and i made SURE to check profiles. not to waste anybodys time. (however my views have now changed on that... *giggles*)
i'm sure that there are decent enough guys out there... that at some point he won't dissapear. :)

| emailing others. |
| emailing others. Posted: 6/18/2006 8:40:18 AM | | uh I just usually say that their pretty or something like that and if they don't get the hint then i usually just cry myself to sleep | |
|
| emailing others. Posted: 6/18/2006 8:30:34 PM | ahhh.. Hacker... you're one of 'those' guys are you? LOL I honestly hate the "You're pretty, want to chat?" emails... because while they are flattering, they give me nothing to respond with, except "thanks..." and they also lead me to believe that you're not emailing me because you read my profile and were interested, but purely because you think I'm hot. No thanks. Feel free to continue with your "You're pretty" emails, but make sure to follow it up with a comment about something in the profile, or a questions or ANYTHING else to add some substance to your email. :) | |
|
| emailing others. Posted: 6/19/2006 8:17:17 AM | Ok....if you ladies could just reply in here with what you'd like to see in an email from me that would save me spending all my time trying to be creative and deciding to go with the "you're hot, if you were a booger I'd pick you!"
Dai_zee gave me the "BRB" on Thursday.....I think she must have gotten lost.
speaking of "brb".....there's a great link out there that Skibunny (hope you're feeling better!) sent me about never trusting a girl who says "brb".....I put that up in my MSN one week and was overwhelmed with messages.....
In all seriousness...if you can't constuct a proper sentence (and that includes proper spelling) than you should spend more time in school and less on the computer. Substance goes a long way....trust me, the worst that can happen from a little effort is a new friend :)
ok, ok....you're all hot......here's my msn........
|
| emailing others. Posted: 6/19/2006 8:41:32 AM | Sorry Acid... that's what you get for not buying me a birthday drink LOL but seriously... sometimes BRB is because theres a two year old getting into god knows what, and sometimes those type of situations take a while to deal with LOL | |
|
| emailing others. Posted: 6/20/2006 3:29:53 PM | Two thoughts occurred to me as I read the previous responses...
1. I like to treat e-mail like any other "real" letter. It should show that you put some thought into what you wrote, and were careful to write in such a fashion as to be clearly understood. Few things make a worse impression than poor spelling and grammar. The way I see it, if someone doesn't care how their writing looks, what other things don't they care about?
2. Messages must have purpose. Do we share a common interest or occupation? It is quite difficult to reply to a message that basically only contains "Hey, you're good looking, get back to me". What is the recipient supposed to write? Give him/her a reason to want to respond.
