Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Smoking is my way of coping...and all it costs is my life in the end..LOL. Anywhoo, managed to quit for two months in Feb, but stress did me in and I started again. Gonna try to quit again and again and again until I make it.

Well, that's where I am, been smoking for 20 years, with the exception of a couple while I was pregnant, I hate smelling like a butt head, I feel like a leper if I smoke anywhere other than my back yard, and it's freakin expensive!! But I tell you, I'm one miserable Cuss this week..

I went back to smoking after over a year cause I enjoy it too much. I'll quit someday I'm sure, till then I'm enjoying my sweet nicotine.

I haven't noticed any stains after 10 years either, If it gets to that point I might quit just cause I would hate to see it when brushing my teeth.

Or I might just go to the dentist and get him to fix it.

I am going through the process of making another person quit smoking.
What a dirty, filthy, disgusting habit it is.

Take it from a nonsmoker....WE notice it. More in the form of your bad breath and the smell of your clothes. Your only fresh smelling out of the shower. As soon as you light that first cigarette you stink again. Sorry but true. There is nothing worse to me than dating a smoker and him wanting to kiss me after having a cigarette! YUCK! That's like kissing an ashtray!

I'm not going to stop dating smokers because of it, most of my friends are smokers, but us nonsmokers do notice it and appreciate the effort to quit. I am a lot more affectionate to a nonsmoker cause they smell soooo much better!

Good luck to you sue, and if you break down and have one, just pick yourself back up and start again.

Weird stat: if you stop smoking for 24 hours, the physical addiction to nicotine has ended. After that, the addiction is primarily mental.

If'n ya need a whippin' boy to get it out of your system, let me know, sue, I can take a good thrashing in the name of a good cause ... just don't break anything LOL

I said stains, not smell.

I understand that I smell like smoke, but for the most part, I carry around listerine strips with me and I take my smoke outside provided it isn't pouring rain or hailing (so like, 1/4 of the time lol).

It still gets on me, but no worse than the smell of grease gets on fast food workers.

My friend used to work at Wendy's and I loved picking her up after a full shift

But tell me, how many people like picking you up cause of your cigarette smell?

Also consider this; A close friend of mine has been smoking for 30 years. He is now having problems with impotency due to smoking. He's not that old, still in his 30's. Started smoking when he was really young. He's scared to date now! It really can happen!

haha, yes we do Timothyj.

But on another note, My mom has always looked years younger than my Aunt, her younger sister. My mom never smoked and my aunt does. The same holds true for myself and my cousin. I look a lot younger than she does even though she is younger than me. Same reason, I don't smoke and she does.

So no, we don't have to worry about a limp willy-wag, only looking like an old hag!

Hi Sue,

Yes I am definately at the same place you are. I am on my third day. I have moments I could cry, scream, kill...hmm not good eh? However, its not going to bad..LOL....as long as I know when to walk away...lol. I have been smoking for the better part of 18 years..with a couple years off....

This is how I describe my relationship with cigarettes:

Cigs are my friends,
With me during the good and bad times,
When I am crying...they help me stop,
When I am happy...they rejoice with me,
When I am scared...they distract me,
When I have been hurt, they take it away,
When I am in physical pain, they help ease the pain,
When i have fallen emotionally, they pick me up.

Cigs have been there for me during all those special moments,
When I graduated from high school,
When I had my first boyfriend cheat on me,
When I was proposed to,
When I got married,
I actually gave up smoking for 2.5 years during my marriage, however when he cheated on me...my friends came back to me and helped me out during a very hard time in my life,
Cigs were there for me when my ex lost his job,
and again when I found one,
Cigs were there when I was left alone alot during the marriage as he was just to busy,
I quit smoking when I found out I was pregnant...but they were there for me the day I found out he cheated on me during my pregnancy yet again,
Cigs were there a year later when I walked out,
Cigs were there for six months of hell. They helped me through days when nothing else could relieve the pain.

Cigs are my friend, through bad times and good times, yes I know eventually cigs may kill you...however...what friend doesnt back stab you once in awhile?

So why am I saying goodbye to my friend? Well....as much as you non smokers dont want to believe it....YES...us smokers do know ALL the disadvantages in smoking. OHHH yes we do...we realize that it stinks, that it causes health problems, could be potentially fatal, we even realize that it ages our skin more...yes it makes our teeth yellow...and HOLY....yes we realize we could make a good car payment every month...we get the fact that it is expensive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know..I know..you non smokers do still find the need to tell us every chance you get.....and here is a little tiny word of advice....the more you harp on it..the more we want a cig!!!!!!!!! Thats right.....none of the things you say...is going to make us quit until we ourselves are ready too! We realize the importance it is for you to tell us every time you see a person light up...but guess what...it just makes us enjoy that cig all the more. The best thing you non smokers can do...is just say "You can do it...I have faith in you" or..."you are amazing and I am proud" or...well you get the pic. What you do not say is: its dirty why would you want to smoke?, think of the money you will save, addiction is all in your head... its no big deal to quit...ect ect ect....GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I can so go on about this.......

Anyways..small rant there...back to why I am quitting....basically because I of the money and the smell. All those other reasons..I dont care about. I really do enjoy smoking. there are times in my life after not smoking that I am going to miss...like after that really good meal....after really great sex....after a really good cry....or that piece of news that makes you so happy...that bored moment....the angry moment...oh the list will go on....my friend is leaving me....and it will be tough through each new moment without her...but I will get through it...as when I am seventy....we have a date. My friend never ages...and she will be waiting for me.

I am curious Regal...how exactly has it been diagnosed that your friend is now impotent from smoking? I know impotent guys that have never smoked a day in their life and smokers that are quite able to get it up almost to much? Has he tried quitting to see if he can get an erection again?

Smoking does age a person...as well as tanning....eating poorly ect...

Best advice for smokers trying to quit....It does get easier after time...yes alot of time..AND NO...that does not make us feel better this moment hearing that...so stop saying that!!!!!!! LOL....Let me ****, cry, complain..it will be worth it...

Also...always remember...you are only one puff away from being a full time smoker!

For you non smokers that cannot fathom how hard it is to give up this addictive nasty habit?

Pick one thing in your life that you love...that you do upto an average of 25 times per day for aprox 5 mins each time, that gives you relaxation, that you truly enjoy doing or having...ex...coffee? And know that you HAVE to give it up....NEVER to have it again no matter how bad you want it....even after ten years of quitting still getting that craving.... Add to that...an addicition substance. And see just how easy of a time you have doing it. And if you dont think it would be hard, then do it. Give up that coffee, chocolate, pepsi, computer, or anything else that you can enjoy.

Astartes....since you are in the process of "making" someone quit....what could you quit...to give her emotional support and to understand what she is going through?

OK.....I am done...I dont think anyone will read this cause its to long... but thats ok....it helped me keep my fingers busy all this time....although..jeesh...I would kill for a cig right about now..

My grandmother quit smoking 15 years ago, maybe more. She always looked older than she should have and when she quit, it actually took years off her appearance (eventually) allowing her to look more youthful and healthy.

Hey Sweet, I know how much you are struggling with quitting and I am very happy to see the way you've externalized the stuff you are going through. If you keep expressing that and keep it outside yourself, I'll bet you'll finally be able to beat your addiction. Heck, you may have just inspired me to give it another go 'round.

While it's true that 'your friend' will be around forever, 'she' will eventually become a memory. If you can keep 'her' completely externalized, 'she' will never have the power to suck you back in.

I'm very proud of you; keep going and keep writing about it.

sweet~ I couldn't have said it better, it is now the end of my 4th day, and I am starting to get some colour back in my face.. I went to a dinner meeting today and there was beer, I had one, and no smoke, that was weird...I almost tackled a guy outside who was smoking, but I showed control...and walked away. I also decided to change my eating habits at the same time, so not only do I want a smoke, I feel like I'm starving...am I an idiot, I should just trot downtown and get a box of beer, a burger and a pack of smokes.. Heheh, just kidding..but it sure sounds good!

well, I don't know how to answer this, so here goes....

A pack of smokes is usually stale before I finish them....

If I smoke 4 a day.....then that means that day has been stressfull....

I don't smoke in my house, or really even in my car......

I didn't smoke during my pregnancies. (3)..couldn't stand the smell or taste.....

People find it hard to beleive that I smoke, even my dentist said to me last week that my teeth aren't stained like that of a smoker.

I want to quit, but for me i think it has just become a stupid nightime ritual. I can go all day and not smoke...but I NEED to have that smoke before I go to bed.....

Any suggestions??? ?

oh, and Sue....keep it up...you will make it!! And even if you break....you will try it again and be successfull. You didn't start smoking over night...so quitting won't happen that way either!!

Stay strong chickie!!

i'm one of those stubborn ones who simply dosn't have the desire to quit, life has been stressfull for as long as i can remember and i only smoke about a pack a month, maybe if the months been really bad i'll smoke 2 packs. and hey it keeps me sane. LOL I dont think i'll die tomorrow from the 2 maybe 3 cigarettes i smoked today, but i can think of a good 3-4 other people who might die if i were to quit. i guess i could refer to myself as a social & stress releif smoker.

sweet, you summed it up quite nicley, when i was living with my abusive ex for 2 1/2 years my "friend" helped to make each day just a little more bearable, and when i finally got the courage to leave my "friend" helped ease the stress of being stalked for the following almost 2 years, and when he finally left me alone my "friend" was there to relax with me,

now even though i dont smoke much i still get the people telling me i should quit etc etc, and sue is right people like that who simply irritate the sh*t out of you only make you want to light up right then and there, but the way i seen it was it was better to smoke a few cigs a day than it would have been to start drinking like a fish. LOL now to all those about to tell me how much i should be trying to quit STFU and pass me that lighter over there would ya?

I am sure I will quit someday...but I dislike extremists on either side.I do not like smoking indoors or at bus-stops or anywheres else that people could be close by.I do however like to smoke outdoors when walking down the street and hate it when I get a dirty look or when people have this attitude about it.They assume too much...On the other hand I dislike people who just light up in bus-stops(the semi-enclosed ones) because they think it is their right to smoke."Come on maam/miss people could want to sit down and they may not want to breathe that in , including me if I am not smoking!"^^^ I am with this guy.I smoke maybe 2-4 smokes a day and get along just fine. But it is going to kill me... one thing at a time.

aww Sweet... you summed it all up. Cigs are the only thing that you can always depend on being there to help you through the tough times LOL however... i too have decided that it is time to say goodbye to my friend... I am doing the 'cut-back' method LOL i only allow myself 4 smokes per day (down from 12-15 on average) Tomorrow will be the start of only 3 per day.
Also, your advice about being supportive and saying things like "Oh.. you only had two today? That's amazing... good job... i'm proud of you" instead of "Should be none" (or something along those lines). I'm damn proud of myself for only having 4 smokes a day :) Some recognition of that is nice.

Astartes: You're in the process of 'making' someone quit huh?? LOL How about 'helping'... that sounds much nicer.
