Seriously makes me mad that they feel the need to rip you off.... SERIOUSLY... you make enough money without ripping people off (not you skates... well maybe)... BUT COME ON... so frustrating!

They don't rip you off. There's over head, guys that need to be paid, heat, power........it all adds up. Once a year we have to go to school to learn about new things. Tools cost money.......but even that said I think that the prices are too high.
I think that if a person makes 15 buxs an hour then that's what they should pay per hour to get their car fixed..........just my opinion.

I've been pretty lucky, found a really good shop near my house. They had my truck for a week trying to figure out a problem. Ended up being the 4 wheel drive motor, but they only charged me the labor to replace the motor (probably spent twice as much time doing diagnostic) so I was content (happy is a little bit of a strong word for a $1000 repair bill).

The worst repairs are the ones where you don't know what's wrong, and drop it off - those tend to get $$$$

Sorry islandsugar my initial thought was you slept with guy, but you are right and it has been proven that women get taken advantage of more often because they feel that women know less about cars. Next time take a man with you preferably mean and nasty looking and you will probably notice a difference in how you are treated. Also get a quote in writing first and if you feel ripped off report them to the bbb. Most likely if he is a rip off artist it will eventually bite him in the ass and he will end up working for 12 bucks an hour at Jiffy lube.
Skates don't take the shots personally but car mechanics are in a group with lawyers.

Same up here where I am ... problem is two factors ... remote location... so your stuck and HAVE to use them .... and because its remote living ... no one wants to work here so its unskilled ... hard to find good mechanics up here that have a clue.

I'm am one of the lucky ones...
I have an awesome neighbourhood mechanic.
He has had his shop off the beaten path for over 20 years and is always busy, but still makes you feel like you are important and gets you in ASAP. His staff have been with him for years too, so he is obviously treating them right too! If anything.. the quotes are on the high side and he works at getting the parts in cheaper or it takes less time than expected..

for him and the boys

hey all...I've got an AWESOME mechanic...infact have referred many friends to him... He is a very decent, honest man...use to have his own shop but couldn't afford the overhead... has a full time job..but does still do repairs etc...he's got a van just for fixin & working on cars/trucks... way better rate ... and excellent diagnostic work... he is a technician..not just a greese monkey!! I'd be happy to send him your name etc...if you're looking for someone local...he's in Richmond...has travelled in the past to work on vehicles...but that would be something you'd have to discuss with him as I'm not sure what he's doing now ... BUt ...

he won't rip you off...please pay him in cash... and dont' wait to pay him... he has burned before...and being such an honest & decent man... I would only refer people that I can trust..as he has helped me out many a time!! PM if you'd like more info...

It does totally suck to get screwed...luckily because I've worked on my car with my dad quite a bit.. I do tend to know more then lots of woman...and even more then some men...lol go figure!! So... they can't pull the wool over my eyes... but very sad when they try to do so to others... I really think its important for us all to have an understanding about basic repairs...and what is needed/parts etc to do them... that way you don't go and get extra stuff replace when it is not necessary!!

I think you mean reamed. when you ream a pipe , you cut out the inside surface . so apply the analogy to your rectum.

If mechanics is so easy, ladies, i suggest you buy the parts and do it yourself. I think mechanics are underpaid. I do most of my repairs, and there is nothing easy about it.

I do most repairs on my vehicles myself, or with the help of a friend.
While I agree it is time-consuming, and often I have had to go out and buy one tool for the job, because it is the only one that works, once you have the tool, it rarely needs to be replaced.
So the comments about tools cost is somewhat inflated.
As far as getting paid based on difficulty, thats why you pay for 6 hours, when it is a 6 hour job.
A quick easy job that takes 15 mins, you pay an hour for, which is fine.
I think that the hourly rate you pay tends to be excessive though.
I have a friend who works in a transmission shop, and I have seen the invoices in regards to mark up etc
Some parts are marked up %800.
There is doing business and making money
and there is taking people for all you can.
Unfortunately, like a future shop salesman, a majority of mechanics like to sell you more than you really need, and rely on your lack of education to make the upsell.

Well I have had my share of salesmen/mechanics try to rip me off, but to no avail. I actually think that it's comical when they see a woman coming, they try to pull S*it over our heads!! What's with that?

I wheeled and dealed when I purchased my car, got a couple thousand off and just last Monday some mechanic dude tried charging me too much for my oil change...no can do buddy.....

Parts are marked up a minimum 40 percent. People are happy to pay lots for parts but not for labour. The biggest cost is the rental of the land and building. Doctors and govt employees are overpaid but I dont think mechanics are overpaid. Maybe dealer mechanics.

I have a real issue with paying $85.00-90.00/hr for labour/shop fees. Gotta love FORD, DODGE,GM etc for that! Once my warranties are off I am outta there pronto! take my business elsewhere I can "sort of" afford. Labour is ALWAYS more expensive than the parts.
