| Huge 2 Weeks in MMA coming up, starting tonight! Posted: 6/24/2006 12:16:59 PM | MMA fans should be in heaven these next two weeks, I know I for one am looking forward to every card.
Here's the schedule:
Ultimate Fighter Finals: tonight, June 24th Ed Herman vs Kendall Grove-185lbs final Mike Bisping vs Josh Haynes-205lbs final bonus fight-Sam Stout vs Kenny Florian-155lbs -The weakest card of the 4 I think, but still has the potential to be a good one. I like Bisping by KO, and Herman by decision...not sure about the other bout cause I don't know much about Stout except he's a decent fighter and Canadian, so go Stout!!!
Ultimate Fight Night: Thursday June 28th Chris Leben vs Anderson Silva-185lbs Rashad Evans vs Stephan Bonnar-205lbs Luke Cummo vs Jonathan Goulet-170lbs Josh Koscheck vs Dave Menne-170lbs Mark Hominick vs Jorge Gurgel-155lbs -On paper this is a VERY solid card...hopefully all these fights will be shown on tv, they are scheduled to be except maybe Hominick vs Gurgel which sucks cause I'd rather see that then Koscheck/Menne. Anyway I see Silva winning a decision, cause he's the better fighter but Leben has an iron chin and Silva probably won't be able to KO him. Bonnar/Evans should be good too, but Bonnar is better on the ground so I see him winning by arm bar in round 2. Cummo and Goulet I don't know much about, so I'll pick the Canadian and hope for the best, but I know Luke is tough. Koscheck SHOULD beat Menne, but Menne is much more experienced. If Koscheck wins it will likely be by boring lay and pray decision. The 5th bout could go either way, so again I'll pick the Canuck and hope he pulls it off!
Pride Absolute tournament round 2:Critical Countdown: Sunday July 2nd Tourney bouts; Wanderlei Silva vs Kazuyuki Fujita Hidehiko Yoshida vs Mirko Cro Cop Fabricio Werdum vs Antonio Rodrigo Nogieura Mark Hunt vs Josh Barnett (undercard features rematch between Antonio ROGERIO Nogieura and Allistair Overeem, and the return of Vitor Belfort to Pride) -Should be an awesome card, especially the tourney matches. Some real tough calls here as IMO all bouts could go either way, except I definitely expect Nogieura to beat Werdum, probably with striking cause their submissions shoulc cancel each other out. I guess I will pick Wanderlei by decision, cause it's unlikely he can KO Fujita...that being said Fujita could win a decision too, he's bigger and a better wrestler, so anything can happen here. I will pick Cro Cop by KO in round 2 over Yoshida, but if this goes to the ground Yoshida can definitely submit him. I will pick Barnett over Hunt...he's a better all round fighter and once he gets Hunt down I think he'll submit him with a key lock...he just better keep those hands up when they are standing though.
UFC 61: Saturday July 8th Tim Sylvia vs Andrei Arlovski-heavyweight title match Tito Ortiz vs Ken Shamrock-205lbs Dan Christison vs Frank Mir-heavyweight Josh Burkman vs Josh Neer-170lbs Yves Edwards vs Joe Stevenson-155lbs -The 2 main events could be real good, the undercard is a little lackluster, but might surprise. I will pick Arlovksi over Sylvia by first round KO. Could go either way...Arlovski is better all round but has no chin...either way this one doesn't get out of round 1. Tito will G&P Shamrock into retirement(I hope) in the first round, tko win. I see Mir coming back and winning by arm bar or triangle from the bottom in round 1. Neer/Burkman could go either way, but I'll pick Burkman by G&P TKO in round 2. Edwards has too much experience for Stevenson, and if Joe can't get the fight down he's in trouble, even if he can he might get tapped. I will say Edwards by KO in round 2.
Okay, I did the run down, let's here everyones thoughts and picks!

| Huge 2 Weeks in MMA coming up, starting tonight! Posted: 6/24/2006 12:32:18 PM | Wanderlei Silva vs Kazuyuki Fujita Hidehiko Yoshida vs Mirko Cro Cop Fabricio Werdum vs Antonio Rodrigo Nogieura Mark Hunt vs Josh Barnett
Silva...tough on the feet and on the mat Cro cop..I dont know how Yoshida can get by those leg kicks..Unless Mirko gets sloppy and Yoshida catches a foot I believe Cro Cop takes this fight. Nog...similar styles but Nog is bigger and proven.. Intersting a couple of sluggers..I guess I will take Barnett for no particular reason other than I think he is better on the ground should it get to that point. Hunt does have the ability to hurt him though. this could be interesting.

| Huge 2 Weeks in MMA coming up, starting tonight! Posted: 6/25/2006 5:52:50 PM | Good card last night IMO, some good fights. Bisping in particular looked really good, as he dominated Haynes. It will be interesting to see how he does against some tougher competition though. Looking forward to Ultimate Fight Night now...and to correct myself, it's actually on Wednesday this week, not Thursday.
Here are the results of the entire card from last night including the bouts not shown on tv: - Mike Nickels defeated Wes Combs by RNC at 3:20 R1 - Matt Hamill defeated Jesse Forbes by GNP at 4:47 R1 - Luigi Fiorivanti defeated Solomon Hutcherson by KO 4:15 R1 - Kalib Starnes defeated Danny Abbadi by RNC 2:56 R1 - Rory Singer defeated Ross Pointon by triangle choke :44 R1 - Keith Jardine defeated Wilson Gouveia by unanimous decision - Kendall Grove defeated Ed Herman by unanimous decision - Michael Bisping defeated Josh Haynes TKO at 4:14 of RD2 - Kenny Forian defeated Sam Stout by RNC at 1:46 of RD1

| Huge 2 Weeks in MMA coming up, starting tonight! Posted: 6/28/2006 8:13:22 PM | Ultimate Fight Night tonight was a solid card. First two fights weren't that exciting, but had their moments I suppose. Evans looked good, surprisingly dominating Bonnar, didn't expect that to happen. Just more athletic I guess. MacDonald looked good in his upset win, and slapped on a real nice, quick armbar. Silva DOMINATED Leben, again not something I expected. I knew Silva was a big jump up in quality opposition for Leben, but I thought his strong jaw would keep him in this fight much longer. Guess he's never been hit by someone who hits that hard, cause he got rocked early and never recovered. The last fight was amazing. Goulet looked awesome, especially in round 1. Then get gets rocked by Cummo early in round 2, but still came back to dominate the round. Goulet dominated round 3 as well, but then got caught in a real tight rear naked choke in the last 30 seconds. Thought Cummo had him for sure, but Goulet managed to slip out and hold on for the decision. Great fight. Goulet looked great controlling on the ground every which way, but still has jaw issues I think. Great lead in card for the next one though...Pride on sunday...likely will be the best card of them all.
Here are the results of the entire card, including non televised fights:
Jorge Santiago def. Justin Levens via TKO (strikes) at 2:13 of Round 1. -Rob MacDonald def. Kristian Rothaermel via Submission (armbar) at 4:01 of Round 1. -Jon Fitch def. Thiago Alves via TKO (strikes) at 4:37 of Round 2. -Jason Lambert def. Branden Lee Hinkle via TKO (ref stoppage) at 5:00 in Round 1. -Josh Koscheck def. Dave Menne via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) after 3 Rounds. -Mark Hominick def. Jorge Gurgel via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) after 3 Rounds. -Rashad Evans def. Stephan Bonnar via Majority Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-29) after 3 Rounds. -Jonathan Goulet def. Luke Cummo via Majority Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-29) after 3 Rounds. -Anderson Silva def. Chris Leben via TKO (strikes) at 0:49 of Round 1.

| Huge 2 Weeks in MMA coming up, starting tonight! Posted: 7/2/2006 10:17:55 PM | An outstanding card tonight put on by Pride. REALLY looking forward to the finals of this tournament now...Nog got lucky in his match a little, decision could have gone either way, but I guess he got the nod cause he rocked Werdum a couple times. Werdum looks better every fight though, give this guy another year or two to work on his striking and all round game and he could be champ some day. Hunt/Barnett went according to plan I guess, thought it would last longer though. Same with Yoshida/Cro Cop. Silva/Fujita was good, ref should have been in their sooner, Fujita can take insane head shots though, lol. Belfort looked like the Belfort of old, though the quality of opposition was lacking. Little Nog beat Overeem again...cause Overeem gassed AGAIN, lol. He always looks so good in the first round, then he goes in the tank. Anyway, looking forward to the next round a LOT. I personally would like to see Nogueira/Silva and Cro Cop/Barnett as the match ups. I would love to see Nog/Silva because it's a Brazilian dream match cause of the Chute Boxe, Brazilian Top Team rivalry. Would like to see Barnett get another shot at Mirko too, think it could go either way. Barnett will tap him this time IMO. We'll see though...
Anyway here's the full results for the card tonight:
PRIDE Open-Weight Grand Prix (2nd Round) Results
Pawel Nastula def. Edson Drago - Submission (Armbar) 4:33 R1 Yoshihiro Nakao def. Eun Su Lee - TKO (Doctor's stoppage) 4:16 R1 Vitor Belfort def. Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos - Submission (Kimura) 4:49 R1 Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira def. Fabricio Werdum - Unanimous Decision Wanderlei Silva def. Kazuyuki Fujita - TKO (Corner threw in towel) 9:21 R1 Josh Barnett def. Mark Hunt - Submission (Kimura) 2:02 R1 Mirko Cro Cop def. Hidehiko Yoshida - TKO (Corner threw in towel) 7:38 R1

| Huge 2 Weeks in MMA coming up, starting tonight! Posted: 7/3/2006 9:33:12 AM | yeah it was good for the team, it was hard for me to watch sammy lose to florian and sam was training with GSP leading up to the fight, but both mark and rob won their fights. alot of people are being hard on mark for his win over gurgel, but he played it safe, didnt take chances, normally he would unload alot of kicks and he does kick VERY hard, but he didnt want to be taken down. He also would normally follow up on the ground with strikes but again jorge is a brazlian born BJJ black belt, why take the chance and mark needed the win to stay in the UFC, he lost his title in TKO in the last fight on the ground and seeing sammy lose didnt help.
either way, he won the fight, jorge could not take him down at all and didnt really land anything at all like some people seem to think, mark checked all his kicks and blocked all his shots

| Huge 2 Weeks in MMA coming up, starting tonight! Posted: 7/4/2006 2:47:32 PM | Thanks for resonding guys!
GT99-Hominick did what he had to to win I suppose. That being said, he better try to bring the fight more next time...Dana doesn't keep boring fighters around usually...remember what happened to Salaverry? Oh wait...Matt Hughes....guess that theory is shot to $hit!
lakelandsm-Good call on the fights, I called them all right too. Didn't think Barnett and Cro Cop would have such an easy time though, or Wanderlei for that matter too...my friend was freaking out yelling at Silva to do something, or get up when he had Fujita on his back. I kept telling him it was all good, he defended perfectly and even had a couple submission attempts. When he got up he was somewhat cautious...which again pi$$ed my friend off. He fought the perfect fight though, you don't go rushing in on a wrestler like Fujita or you get taken down...let him come to you and try to catch him on the way in. Silva barely took a punch in this fight and didn't have a mark on his face after.
Anyway, wondering who everyone would like to see matched up in the semi's? Here are the 3 possibilities available to Pride: 1.Cro Cop/Silva and Nogueira/Barnett 2.Cro Cop/Barnett and Nogueira/Silva 3.Cro Cop/Nogueira and Silva/Barnett
I'd like to see #2 personally, cause I really want to see Nog/Silva cause of the Brazilian thing and the Top Team/Chute Boxe rivalry. #1 would make some sense too...option #3 seems the least likely cause there's no real interest in a Barnett/Silva match. Should be interesting...
Another question for my fellow MMA fans....what if Wanderlei wins the whole tournament??? That would say a LOT for him maybe being the best fighter in the world. Would he get a Pride heavyweight title shot at Fedor then? He is a weight class below, but that would be a HUGE dream match in Japan...perfect for the new years show. Wonder if he would actually have a chance...I got to think so...If they stay standing either guy could KO the other...hell Fujita rocked Fedor, so Silva certainly could KO him. And Silva has only been KO'd once, but dropped(flash KO) several times before regaining his composure, so Fedor could definitely KO him, cause Silva has never faced someone with the KO power of Fedor IMO(Cro Cop maybe). Anyway, if Wanderlei wins the tourney they HAVE to make this fight happen, I would love to see it and so would many others I think.

| Huge 2 Weeks in MMA coming up, starting tonight! Posted: 7/4/2006 4:31:33 PM | trust me, I am not sure how many fights of marks you have seen but that was the ONLY fight where he played it safe.
have you watched some of his UCC/TKO fights?
the only think that suprised me was that he didnt kick jorges legs when he leg sweep him. If you seen the second fight he had with shane rice he was inflicting some serious damage when shane was butt scooting, it set up the TKO, rice was in pain, and trust me, hominick kicks like a mule, its had to picture a guy who fights at 145 (normally) to hit as hard as he does, but somehow he generates alot of power in those kicks

| Huge 2 Weeks in MMA coming up, starting tonight! Posted: 7/5/2006 6:12:45 AM | If these happen here is my take.
1.Cro Cop/Silva and Nogueira/Barnett
Crocop..I think cro cop hits hard and has size over Silva. Both of these fighters CAN be hurt but I believe the potential to hurt belongs to Mirko.
Nog...well nog is nog and while Barnett looks pretty good on the ground NOG has 2 ways to win where barnett has one. Nog can win via ending of the fight(Ko or sub) AND decision. Barnett cna only win via ending the fight (KO or sub)..he will not win a decision unless his name is Fedor. See the Ricco/Nog fight for my reasoning behind that.
2.Cro Cop/Barnett and Nogueira/Silva
HMMMMMMMM IF Barnett can take Mirko down he can win the fight. Mirko has great TD defense though But Barnett is big enough to power him down. I would go on a limb and say barnett on this one.
Nog wins versus Silva IMO. Again Nog is used to fighting bigger guys and his groundwork is top notch. Silva has the power and good ground skills but I see Nog somehow getting Silva down and gaining a dominant position for the win.
3.Cro Cop/Nogueira and Silva/Barnett
IMO the best potential matchups
Nog v Mirko we have seen but if you recall Nog was getting tatooed until the TD. Nogs takedowns are not awesome but good enough to repeat the 1st result. I say Nog on this one again.
Silva v Barnett.. Well honestly Silva hits like a mule but he has had some interestng fights with wrestler/brawler types (like Rampage) until he gets the big knee or punch in. Barnett once again has size, is used to being hit hard can probably take Silva down multiple tims, can hit pretty hard himself and has some wrestling to gain a dominant position. I will Barnett in this one too!
So I guess what I am saying is that unless NOG/Barnett are paired this round that is the fight we will see in the finals. In which case I take NOG for the same reasons I mentioned earlier.

| Huge 2 Weeks in MMA coming up, starting tonight! Posted: 7/6/2006 6:49:54 PM | GT99-I have seen Mark fight before...he is a good fighter, just saying he better not employ that style regularly in the UFC is all. Saw him beat the crap out of Stephane Vigneault last night on the Fight Network...from TKO 20. Good fight.
lakelandsm-I agree that Barnett and Nog, the two grapplers, might have the best chance of meeting in the final. Really any 4 of these guys could win it all, which should make for an exciting semi finals and finals.
So what do you guys think about Silva's chances of winning? If he does should he face Fedor? I think definitely he will have earned it, and all the Pride fans in Japan will demand to see this match up. It would be an awesome fight IMO, and someone would get ko'd for sure IMO.
