Are there any local film buffs on POF?

Hello Fellow Quebecfeeeeeshies!

I was wondering if there were any kooky film buffs on here?
What was the last movie that you saw? What did you think of it?
I pretty much watch all kinds of stuff, although I am partial to alot of independant and foreign films. Last great film I saw was Buena Vida (delivery) at Excentris....a cynical little Argentinian film that was quite well-done, I thought.

Next movie I am dying to see: A Scanner Darkly.
Based on the Philip K. D-i-c-k book....and I love his books!

Movies based on Philip K. D-i-c-k books/stories:
Paycheck (2003)
Minority Report (2002)
Total Recall (1990)
Blade Runner (1982)

So what have you seen lately/planning to see?
Inquiring minds want to know!

Hmmm everyone seems to have gone and seen Superman this past week-end.
I personally don't get why it's such a must-see movie for everyone.
I prefer Spiderman myself...at least he is a very creative kisser! LOL

Well if you're into comic books, you'd want to see Superman, it's only natural!
Spiderman 3 looks amazing too!

I personally like Superman, if I would fall off a building I rather get saved by a sexy man in his underwear’s instead of a spider guy, spiders give me the creeps. Besides I bet superman is a better lover.

I recently saw Superman at the theatre followed by Memento which was recommended to me so I rented.

Superman: One word: Meh. It was way below my expectations. Who knew Superman can be so mute?

Memento: Excellent film. Plays tricks on you and screws with your mind. My kind of film. If you liked films like "the usual suspects", "se7en" and "the sixth sense", then you will love this film. I love films with a twist.. the ones that keep you guessing and then surprise you. And most importantly, the kind of film you think about for hours after you''ve finished seeing it.

Go rent it today!

That's interesting adnbek, because I have been meaning to see Memento for the longest time. I've heard nothing but good things about it and the acting in it. It seems like a rather dark film though, and I guess I just haven't been in the mood for that....but who knows? Now that you mentioned it to me, I might pick it up this week. :)

A mute Superman? What does he do....just stand around flexing his muscles or something?

I just rerented Sixth Sense this week. Now that is a a most excellent film! I love the way it's shot with that touch of red through out...pretty cool.

Hmmm I think you should rent Spiderman....in terms of who is the better lover, Spidie sure gives Superman a run for his money I think. Yeah, pretty hot....even upside down! LOL

That is just my humble opinion anyway!

Speaking of Superman and relationships, at the end of the film I would have loved to see Superman, Lois and Richard all on the Maury Show and Maury telling Richard his trademark sentence: "Richard... you are NOT the father."

I've seen Memento ages ago, good movie!

And if you're familiar with Superman adnbek, you'll know that he doesn't usually talk a lot. And yes, this was one of the best Superman movies ever made, the effects were the best and I like the fact that it's not the usual movie where they show you how superman came to earth as a kid. This one was a bit different :)

adnbek:

That would be hilarious! That reminds of that scene in Austin Powers when Dr. Evil and his son are in a support group and the son is telling them all how his father is trying to kill him and the moderator says, your father doesn't really want to kill you and Dr. Evil tells them that yes, the boy is right. too funny!

Let's see...any other film buffs out in the POF universe?
If you're going and see a movie...what movie are you planning to go and check out this week-end?

This is the week-end of Pirates Of The Carribean Take Two...
What girl can resist a good pirate movie....and Johnny Depp?

Yarrrrrrrrrr!

The reviews say it sucks.

And after blowing money on crap movies, I take reviews more seriously now.

I don’t have to read any reviews, I go see it and if I don’t like it, I call it a loss and deal with it, for me it’s a night in the town as long as my date is next to me I’m satisfied.

I never took reviews seriously.. because. I went to see movies that won awards, and I totally hated them. The most recent one is a quebecois movie. C.R.A.Z.Y. the actors were good.. but I hated the story, it was too long.. then a few years ago.. Moulin Rouge. at the beginning the guy is typing that Satine died. well I was half way to the movie and almost sleeping.. I just fastforwarded it to see how she was dying!!! and those two movies won lots of awards!!

I am tempted by the new Superman for 2 things.. First that new Superman is HOT. and second, one of my favorite actors (Kevin Spacey) plays in it.

Well I have to admit I take whatever critics say about movies..with a grain of salt. Sometimes a whole shaker....LOL I have very eclectic taste in movies and it's the rare person I know who has the same taste as I do in everything. Just read my profile to see the names of some directors I admire. I will watch the occasional Hollywood blockbuster....but not every week or even every 2 weeks, that's for sure.

As for Superman...I have heard that people loved it, hated it, and thought it was just O.K. Personally, I'm just not in the mood to see it....so maybe I will wait for it to come out on DVD.

Silk_petal_rose...those sound like interesting movies you mentioned. Some actors whose work I enjoy for sure. So maybe I will see if I can find them.

Sylvie, it's funny that you mentioned Moulin Rouge. I just bought the DVD on sale at HMV this week. :) It's one of my all-time favorite movies. I like it 'cause it's different and quirky. People either love it...or they hate it. Not for everyone tastes, that's for sure.

Hmmmm Kevin Spacey. Now that is one talented actor!

A little more from the peanut gallery, folks!

Hey Poetica - you seem like a cool woman - I definitely am a movie buff. I like all films from Asian - to blockbuster - to indie's.

We should hang out as friends sometimes - even though I may be married - I still believe women and guys can be just friends.

Anyway if you liked Moulin Rouge - then maybe you would likely Strictly Ballroom by the same director.

I'm going to see Bon Cop - Bad Cop tonight at Fantasia film festival - its the world premier and the director is supposed to be there.

Bye

hey ovnay,

Why in the world would Bon Cop - Bad Cop be playing at the Fantasia film festival??
How odd! When I saw the trailer, I thought the movie looked totally predictable. But hey, I could be wrong! That is cool though, that you're going to the premiere and that the director is supposed to be there. One movie I caught at the Montreal World Film Festival a couple of years ago had the whole cast and the director, producer etc. there...and they answered a few questions once the movie was done. That was awesome.

Have fun at the movies!

Well POF film folk, I finally saw A Scanner Darkly after much anticipation (and talk) about the movie...

And it was AWESOME! It was kind of how I imagined a LSD trip would feel like (if I had ever taken drugs) in full technicolour! The effects were pretty cool and the acting was solid...I especially enjoyed the characters that Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson and Rory Cochrane played. Hmmm Rory Cochrane...I didn't even recognize the guy that once played Tim Speedle on CSI Miami.

And Keanu Reeves? Well Keanu Reeves...played Keanu Reeves as usual. Which I don't mind at all! ;-) I had no idea that most guys are less than impressed with Keanu's acting talents. All the guys in our group last night seemed to mostly associate Keanu with Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure .... lol

Now I think I will watch Richard Linklater's Waking Life, which I had bought on sale for $5 at HMV a couple of weeks ago...Same director and same effects...let's see what he did with that in this movie.

Well, that's more from the Peanut Gallery, folks!

It has spots where it gets a tad pretentious and a wee bit twee, but the stylised animation and music create a dreamlike, alternate reality. The ideas and concepts of the film really get into your head, and trigger the dream logic part of your brain.

It's a beautiful thing to watch. Lots of fine detail in the background to ponder.

Take a look at William Castle's B movie horror masterpiece, "The Tingler" (circa 1958), starring Vincent Price. It is credited as the first cinematic expression of an LSD trip. Delightful, trippy, lurid colours.
