| The ART on your walls... and WHY? Posted: 7/7/2006 1:26:54 PM | I was wondering about the messages we surround ourselves with everyday by putting up art. What artwork do you have on your walls and why?
I found a stylized picture of jesus outside my building on the ground one day, it was in great shape. I wrote underneath his face, "objet trouvé", threw it in an Ikea frame and voila!
I have a 60 inch long poster of Hokusai's The Great Wave.... man i find new reasons to trip to that at least once a week.
I have a photocopied piece of original Haida artwork some Homeless Native guy sold me for my pint. I traded him over the balcony of the Ship and Anchor. Then i put a two hundred dollar frame job into it and it looks awesome. The transaction still is part of the piece for me.
I have a small painting by "Danu" of clouds that he accidentally put a faint red fingerprint underneath the sealant. Dont ask me what is going on there but it makes me think.
I have a photocopy 2"x4" picture i bought on Rek Beach in Vancouver sold to me by a naked man of an old lady wearing a tophat full of bumble bees. Given the opportunity, I would buy art from naked artist again!
I also have a blank canvas with the word "balance" scribed as a ambigram... its a work in progress.
I am very interesting in hearing what do you guys have.

I also have 2 Orca prints. Living in the NW I have developed a strong love of these creatures.

Oh yeah I also have a 33 inch high gold lacquer buddha watching over me at my computer. I guess sculpture should be a different thread. Ah, maybe not, what the hell add sculpture. We can do what we want here, I guess.

| The ART on your walls... and WHY? Posted: 7/7/2006 7:58:41 PM | Hmmm, I don't have any art on my walls. In fact, throughout the whole house, I only have 3 things on the walls.
1. In the office, I have a reproduction, 1876 U.S. Marine's sword and sheath hanging. I was never in the marines, I just thought it looked cool.
2. In the livingroom, I have a large clock hanging above the fireplace. It was a Christmas present from my brother.
3. In the dining room, I have a useless, mission style, tri-panel mirror. It matches the architecture of the house, that's all.
When I had the windows in the basement replaced with glass block, I saved one of the old, 3 lite windows. All three panes even still have wavy glass. Someday, I want to put something in those 3 panes and make the old window frame into a picture frame. But, I can't figure out what I want to put behind the three panes of glass.

It says teamwork at the bottom, and its got a guy on a recliner with his face pressed up on a huge bong, and his buddy is on the floor 5 feet away lighting it for him..... Its like those pictures you would c in a school hall way, only better!

| The ART on your walls... and WHY? Posted: 7/7/2006 9:59:27 PM | | I have a beautiful charcoal landscape dated 10/29/29. It was done in a drawing 101 class by Maurice Bly. He was a friend of my parents that passed away recently. He was an incredible talent and wanted to be an artist, but his parents forced him to become an architect instead. He always regretted not pursuing what he really wanted, so it serves as a kind of reminder to me to not make the same mistake. | |

He was an incredible talent and wanted to be an artist, but his parents forced him to become an architect instead. He always regretted not pursuing what he really wanted, so it serves as a kind of reminder to me to not make the same mistake. It could have been worse. His parents could have forced him to be an engineer. Then his career would have been completely without art.
To make my post relevant to the original topic, I used to have some of my best, current drawings hanging on the walls when I was still in college. But, those were academic, and so presentation was most important. Now that i'm in the real world, "presentation" takes a backseat to clarity and completeness.

| The ART on your walls... and WHY? Posted: 7/7/2006 11:02:30 PM | Looking around this room, I realize I have an odd assortment of wall art ...
A streetscape of Portugal ... lovely colours.
A photograph of the northern lights taken in Nova Scotia.
A landscape in a mirrored framed of the Swiss Alps.
A black and white photo of The Beatles looking out from the window of a train somewhere (circa 1963)
An original oil painting by Tom Wilson of a distorted face surrounded by a sliver of the moon.
A portrait of my kids and I from 10 years ago.
A rooftop view of Puerto Vallarta from my last trip there.
A framed sand art piece with bullrushes.
Yep ... that's home.
Good idea for a thread btw.

The rest of it is posters for local plays from my old days in the drama department. To remind me of better times. Sad, single emo tear.

| The ART on your walls... and WHY? Posted: 7/9/2006 3:45:26 PM | I have mostly water colors.
My favorite is a painting by my great aunt Hazel Hanell. It is a dogwood in winter. I love the shape of dogwood trees, the angles of the branches with snow, and some snow covered cedars in the background.
I have an incredible pencil drawing of an ornate box turtle but the signature isn't legible for me.
a 40's abstract oil of farm houses by Vin Hannell
I have two water color prints by Doug Barton. One is a frog hopping lillies in bloom and the other is an indian woman.
I've got some sculpture, but it's not on the walls.

| The ART on your walls... and WHY? Posted: 7/9/2006 5:29:55 PM | My walls are filled with lots of things ... let's see:
Paintings my mother created (mostly abstract, oil on canvas). A watercolour created by another family member ~ a natural landscape. A print of two owls. A variety of traditional wall hangings. A large wooden Buddha. A candle holder. Two boxes with knick-knacks in them. A Madonna calendar from last year. Native Canadian and Australian art. A variety of Christian depictions ~ Jesus on the cross, The Virgin Mary, etc. Two needlepoints created by my grandmother ~ one with a rose and another with a young girl and boy seen with an angel. A Chinese sword. An abstract painting made by my friend. Some awards. A few mirrors. Some shelving with family pictures. A small, square, ceramic piece ~ a young-girl with her dog. Five lights that are grounded and were here when I bought my home.
And, well ... all make my home just that ~ home ... it is where the heart is!

|
| The ART on your walls... and WHY? Posted: 7/9/2006 7:42:50 PM | On some walls I have large dark spatter painted sheets that look like a spacy night sky. Some are deep blue with white spatters and streaks and others are black with multi-colored spatters. They are serene, yet hold my interest. I never tire of looking at them.
I also have two long runner-like strips cut from an old oriental rug hanging full length down two walls.

I'm really looking to get a copy of van Gogh's "Notte Stellata". It is a beautiful piece of artwork, and I would love to do my room in those colours.
Other than that, I really want to start collecting Asian-inspired art and trinkets. I have a red Chinese lantern and a beautiful geisha figurine to start with, but I want to expand on that.

| The ART on your walls... and WHY? Posted: 7/20/2006 10:10:08 AM | | Westsider, i think that old window frame with the wavy glass would look great right on the wall without any pictures behind it. Just let the wall show through the wavy glass, plus, the reflections on it would be subtly cool. Seems to me that would be in keeping with the other "architectural" themes you have going in your house. | |
