I know this method of meeting can allow all of us to be shallow at times.
A while back I communicated with someone who had an ok picture and said their body type was average. I do prefer someone smaller than myself.
Well she came back on-line and emailed me. We decided to meet.
Well, not only is she a lot cuter in person, bu her definition of average is not giving herself enough credit. On top of all that she is a very nice person.
I have met a bunch of women who did not represent themselves honestly, and there will always be those people out there (men and women)
Sometimes you get a pleasant surprise.
Just goes to show that you do not know until you meet someone.

Your very correct! She may have been told at one time she wasn't slim or fit...so she chose average. I've found over a period of time, no matter how we describe ourselves...someone disagrees! I do know, I'd like to understand how a person can say they are athletic and have a belly on them!! I work out sometimes, does that make me athletic...NO!! As to pictures, they can be deceiving and it is a pleasant surprise when the person you agree to meet, is cuter/more handsome!! I try to post my best pics, but I've come to the conclusion, doesn't matter, as everyone has different tastes!!
Are you still seeing her? Hopefully all has gone as well as your first pleasant surprise!

Refreshing to see a post about someone saying the pics did not do justice, over the reverse! LOL

Sounds like a smart cookie you met...toning DOWN instead of UP, doing away with the disappointment factor!

So true, but I still think that it should be considered mandatory that a photo showing a person`s physique from the knees, or atleast hips up should be posted if a person really wants to meet someone.

Call it shallow and I won`t argue with you, but most people simply aren`t interested in meeting someone that they have never seen before and body type IS important to almost everyone in here looking for someone just as facial structure and personality are. This is not to suggest that everyone has the same ideal, quite to the contrary in my experience, infact I have met a few woman who said they prefer my current bodystyle which is no longer athletic and toned. Unfortunately we didn`t mesh in other ways.

I have to admit that I often don`t find women who are more than say 20 pounds over their ideal weight to be initially attractive, not to say that I couldn`t love them once knowing them, but I have gotten more than a little gunshy after meeting several women who listed themselves as average or having a few extra pounds who in reality turned out to be 50 or more pounds over weight and who often display some difficulty in moving or rising from a seated position. Not attractive to me at all and they might as well know this before we get too far involved, just as I want any potential date to know that I am not slim and trim.

Body shape is important to nearly everyone and I believe that it is hardwired into our psyches. I have had several women completely blow me off without a reply and since I read their profiles and weighed the posted similarities in interests and desires before approaching them I can only assume that what I look like does not appeal to them. I wish they would atleast say thanks but no thanks but ultimately I am greatful to know right away that we have no initial chemistry. Admit it, being able to look at your partner with desire is important because if you don`t, what kind of connection do you have? I`m much more comfortable being blown off on-line than I am being dumped in public and face to face. Probably true of most people and that`s why I don`t even begin to fathom the deceit in so many profiles.

Maybe all of the average women that I have dated were merely bloated and carrying alot of water weight from the hot weather, that time of the month, something salty they ate, or whatever..........or maybe it was all the beer!

Yeah, I admit that deceiving/misleading photos and profiles are a huge pet peeve of mine and I`d rather be left alone than to get involved with anyone who either does not see themself or portray themself realistically. Given the original premise of your post Joshua Tree, a good photo or two in a profile removes any interpretation or mistaken modesty.

I think "Average" is just that. Average.. Not too fat, not too skinny. I would even say that "Average" should be the same as "A few extra pounds" since I would venture a guess that most people have a few extra pounds on them..

Probably true John. What I find somewhat disturbing is that there are so many young people these days, especially young women, who are way more than a few pounds overweight. What are they going to be like when they reach middle age and their bodies honestly start to age? They are the next healthcare crisis in this country.

Oh.. I have to give this advice to anyone that is uploading pictures to this site (or any other dating site)... Test them first. What you think is a great picture of you, may not be the one OTHER people think is a great picture of you.

Go to a site like "am I hot or not" and post your pictures... the key isn't to know if you are actually hot or not (even though you may find out in the mean time)... but you'll find out which pictures of you are deemed "best" by how they are rated.

You'd be suprised which ones people will rate higher.

What about if someone is here for just friendship?

I've been griped at for not having a full body pic. Why should that matter when I'm not trying to get dates anyway?

Besides, there is no accurate option for my size. I'm short and Hobbit-shaped (sans furry feet), not BBW, and I am definitely more than 'just a few extra pounds'.

Still, why does this matter if I'm just here for friends?

That's awesome, I hope others will see this and will open their eyes to other possibilities that are all too often overlooked.

Thank you sharing your positive experience. It's not done enough and it was a nice break from the norm.

In the words of a great man-- "Your an island of reality, in an ocean of diarrhea".

Well if you're here for just friends, I don't really think it should matter (IMO). However, because we can't always control how others perceive us, the only thing you can really do is put your best self out there. Regardless of what you are looking to get out of this site, consider that those looking at your profile will still only see your picture first before they even decide to get down to the meat of it. It's just human nature we all do it.

Think of it like a menu, no pun intended, some are just more inclined to choose their meal based on the picture; rather than hearing about the specials or reading the description before making a decision. What’s that saying, “we eat with our eyes first”. LOL.

But don't be discourage, the reality is someday someone will pick your "menu" and know that that's exactly what they've been craving all this time.

Oceans of Love, Luck and Happiness,

Aloha.

Yes, I agree with that.
The pic is the first thing evaluated and either followed up or dismissed.
Those guys who haven't seen the profile (hence don't know why I'm here) are excused.

There have been guys who, upon having read my 'just friends' profile, still insist I should have a full-body pic.
THAT'S what I find so ridiculous, and hilarious: that someone I don't even want to date anyway would get so annoyed about my looks. What's he losing? Nothing.

Humans are such extraordinary, marvellous and entertaining creatures.

Ok this is where I can't defend myself from sounding mean.

I have learned to be VERY leery of profiles that post "about average" with only head shot photos.

There are exceptions - yes - I have met a couple that had that same combination who turned out to actually be very attractive "body-wise" - but by and large - as most men on here will tell you - if all they have are headshots with the "about average" description - they are hiding something.

Body shape is important to nearly everyone and I believe that it is hardwired into our psyches.

true a study was done and 94% of males were attracted to women with a 70 degree angle between to smallest part of their waist and the widest part of their hips, and this went for both guys who liked big women and smaller women. the study was done by showing thousands photos of women to the men and viewing brain waves.

Speaking of pictures...

What about those profiles that have pictures of "her" hanging onto some dude? Comical actually - they're on a dating site (men and women) and actually put up photos of themselves with them leaning on, their arms wrapped around, or whatever, some guy or girl.

*yawn* i see yet another "big" guy saying women with "over 20" pounds not "attractive". that covers many body types and fat and muscle distribution shapes. guess if you stay online long enough, you'll find somebody who doesn't have 20 pounds anywhere, if you always take a scale to first meetings. i agree with posting real pics, not old ones or retouched ones. i don't even know how to have real pics make a person look 50 pounds lighter; maybe i should spend time learning that instead of other productive things. you can photoshop and create just about anything, though, apparently. if someone only has a headshot, you should be aware that you have only seen their head no matter their description of themselves. some things are obvious from the headshots though. as another person on here said, a chubby face with no visible bones like a collar bone usually means a chubby person, duhhh.

and also, if you read what the people on here say, alot of them are already paying for gym memberships and using them. i'm sure at least a certain percentage are taking fat burners too. mmmm..maybe losing weight isn't always as easy as this. if it was, all these people here and at the gym would be skinny. since yes i do go to the gym and know what people there look like, they are not all skinny.

Thanks Drinks for a positive post!

I can honestly say that I have been fortunate, every guy I have met via the internet has an "accurate" photo posted, sometimes they are a little cuter in person, sometimes a little less, but I have yet to experience some guy who is 84 instead of 48, states he is athletic and clearly the last weight lifting he has done was a fork to his mouth, etc.
