If you wish to be contacted, go to your Mail Settings and turn on your Messaging feature. The options are:
Allow Instant Messages
No The chat link will not be visible and no one can IM you You can however, IM someone as long as they have their Chat enabled /turned on (see above).
Yes Will display the chat link and anyone can send you a chat request
Favourites Only Will display the Chat link only to people on your favourites list who can then send you a chat request
Important Note: You don't have to have your IM/Chat turned on to contact others, only if you wish to be contacted. You could, after having received a chat request from a more favourable prospect, turn off the IM/Chat so no one else bothers you, while still maintaining the existing chat session.
HOW TO INITIATE A CHAT SESSION Updated May 21 2010
If you see a person you wish to chat with on any of the following pages;
Online (# of user) link or just the Online link, depending on where you see it and if you are logged in to your POF eMail
... and you see either of the lnks Chat, Instant Message or IM User, either under or beside their picture, simply click on that link and you "should" establish an IM/Chat session with them, providing they anser your chat request of course.
If you don't see the Chat, Instant Message or IM User links, then you cannot Instant Message them because they have not enabled it.
The above list of areas where you may see a chat link is subject to change from time to time as the site sees fit.
You may also see Instant Message User-Xwithin a users email when you open it, if they have their IM function turned on.
They may refuse or not answer the request, and you will get a message indicating such in the chat window. Also note that not all users are aware of how to turn off their IM consequently they may ignore your request for any number of reasons and the request will time out. Some users may not realize that their pop up blocker is also blocking the request.
Important
You'll know if a chat request comes through via a pop notification, so ensure you have plentyoffish.com and pof.com excluded from your list if you have your pop up blocker enabled.
Chat session are not saved consequently there is no way to retrieve them.
I have tried the instructions above, and I get what you are saying, but what if "instant message" does not appear only "User Online" how do I "IM" them? Also how do I get "instant message" under my profile. I do have it turned on and no pop up blockers. I do get users "IM" me but I don't know how they do it.

It simply means they don't have their IM turned on, and you can't IM them.

IM user will appear under or beside your name, depending on where they view you from, eg. from a search, from their favourites list, etc..
when you have your IM on, all they do is click on the link --> IM User
Thanks for the quick response. I have already read the links, but it's always great to post. So I guess the user must have IM turned off. I do have my IM selected on, but when I load the explorer again and don't log in and do a search, it just says "online user" under my profile.
OK - Here's the problem. I'm reading emails, forums, and other stuff when all of a sudden someone wants to chat with me. Great, I love to chat. Problen is, when the chat has ended and the IM screen has gone I realize I forgot to write the persons name down. Is there some way to find that person again or are they gone for ever.
Please, help - I found my soul mate and lost her all the the course of 10 minutes.
Unfortunate as that may be, there is no recall. If they're truly interested in you, check to see if they viewed your profile (providing that they have the feature turned on),

As far as speakers are concerned, if you aren't happy just hearing from another room and want to hear outside, …some bigass Tannoys and a 300 watt NAD amp will do nicely.
i agree it does it to me too, not just one or two people i try to chat with, but every single person i try to chat with. 1st it says pending, then i timed out. one or two people i can understand but every single person??????
sort of confused by the green and red chat signs next to people who are in my mailbox and online?? sometimes it says chat in green ..other times it says chat in red ..sometimes it just has a little green ball.. whats it all mean??
OK I have read all of the posts. I am not seeing anyone with the same problem I am having. I was able to chat then one of the guys that I have been talking with told me he can't send me a chat anymore, that it just times out. So I tried to chat with him and I get a box that pops up. On the top it has POF Chat (Beta) Chat List Chat Settings Chat status - which I have checked online Chat Sounds - on But I cannot chat and nothing I do on this will change it. I do have all the other areas correct. I will accept chats, etc.
