Alright so i did a thread search to see if there was anything like this. Didn't see anything so here it goes.

Does anyone have any specific way to get rid of certain things. For example I have had trouble with ants and fruit flies. Does anyone have any tricks to get rid of them??

I've heard for ants you can use cinnamon and water to make a paste, anyone else have any other suggestions, except buying ant posion?

So many people have ways to do so many things..passed down from family members or friends.. I think it would be neat to learn some little tricks on how to do some things.

Maybe you know a good way to get out ohh say a ketchup stain you have on your shirt from eating a hotdog at the little vendor outside the dome the other weekend..:D

Come on..let's hear em....

Edit--The title may not suit the thread...but i never claimed to be the ultimate thread starter now did I?? hehehe

Well, you can speed up the whole process of getting rid of ants thing by finding the nest and putting the poisen directly on it.

Whenever I'm cleaning with a bucket of soap, I dump the water around my back entrances and under a window where they always seem to figure out how to get in once a year. It also helps cut down on the amount of earwigs in my back yard that can get tracked into the apt.

The biggest thing I find is planning. I know I get ants each year in the Spring. I know where they come in, so I start placing ant traps around those areas long before they appear. The very first ones out and about are picking up the poisen and taking it back to the nest.

I had a major ant problem when I moved in 2 years ago and now I just see a couple at the start of Spring then no more.

For Fruit Flies, I find having no standing water around or wet cloths helps a lot. I'm bad for letting my dishes soak and forgetting about them and that's where a lot of mine come from. Have a garbage can that seals, have a compost bin outside and don't keep the rotting items in the house at all. Rinse out dishes immediately after use and shake off as much water as you can if you aren't washing right away. Umm, good screens in your house because I find a lot come in on compost day.

Regarding tough stains. I've used Mr. Clean to get a tough stain out of a white roots sweater I love. Mr. Clean/Vinegar also a really good way to get stains out of carpets.

My friend had massive amounts of ants years ago -- he bought a bag of lime and spread it around his house. They never came back.

you dilute it a little and don't scrub too hard. I've only used it like that on white clothes. I have used it on different colored carpets though. The home recipee for carpet cleaner for a steam cleaner consists of water, Mr. Clean, and vinegar. Doesn't hurt the carpets.

The lime would make sense, as I know they will not cross a chalk line. I think Nova Scotia is one big ant nest though.

For fruit flies, get a jar or cup, put vinegar + red wine, or just red wine vinegar, and a splash of dish soap (it breaks the tension on the surface) and cover with saran, pierce tiny holes in it and let er go. I also pour bleach down my drains, I swear to god they hang out in there!

You can do a ton of stuff with eucalyptus oil if you keep it around the house. Used to use it a lot when I was living in Australia because it's dirt cheap down there.
- It disinfects cuts when used directly
- You can mix it with water in a spray bottle and disinfect rooms and kill dust mites with it
- If you're congested and sick, you can put a few drops in a hot basin and inhale the vapors to clear it up
- If you're sore, you can mix it with hand cream or massage oil and rub it in
- You can use it as a cleaner around the house, does a great job on tvs and monitors
- It will break down adhesives, like the ones that are left behind when you take stickers off something you bought

I wonder if the koalas would eat it? you might still need some leaves :)

but I also agree They put the oil on a very nasty cut I got at the beach while I was down under the cut cleared withing 2 days...

Aloe usually takes me about 4 or 5

Fruit flies are the most annoying little buggers ever. They are a pain to get rid of.

Chikky got to the koala joke before me, but I've got this one:

A few years ago a guy had this as his sig on some message board. I thought it was funny so I made a shirt with it and a picture of a koala.

"If you don't want my koalas, baby, don't shake my eucalyptus tree!"

the vinegar/red wine thing works excellent for fruit flies!! I had to deal with them one summer when I had a disgusting roommate! I find the vinegar work without getting too gross just sitting there like wine....did it with beer once too and it did catch the flies but the bowl it was all in got pretty disgusting and fermented or something. Ants...the best thing u can do is find the entrance for them and attack there...ya gotta get rid of the whole clan or they just keep coming. I was watching a thing on the news about why there are so many ants this year...more survived the warmer winter and came up from the ground earlier multiplying

@dimples, yeah I can attest to that...I usually just used to get around the foundation but this year there was a huge ant hill outside...granted, made my life easier in the end.
