What to take to potluck?

I found a great recipe when you need something to take for a cookout, dinner, or any event.

Broccoli Cole Slaw

2 bags (3 ounce) Ramen Noodles Oriental flavor works best
3/4 stick butter
1/4 cup slivered almonds
2 bags (12 ounce) bags broccoli cole slaw (in the bagged salad section of the grocery store)
1/4 cup cunflower seeds
Chopped green onions for garnish

Dressing mix
3/4 cup canola oil
1/4 cup brown or white sugar
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 ramen noodle seasoning packet

Put the ramen noodles in a bag and crush them with a rolling pin while melting butter in a large skillet over low/medium heat. Add the crushed noodles and slivered almonds to the skillet and saute, stirring occasionally (keep temperature at low/medium heat). Meanwhile, whisk together all the dressing ingredients in a small bowl. Place the shredded broccoli into bowl and toss with the noodles, almonds, and sunflower seeds. Pour dressing over salad and toss to coat. Garnish with chopped green onions.

Experiment with it. Personally a little too sweet, so I cut down on the sugar.
Let me know if you like it.

If you want god-awful, take chili and add several dashes of Chinese five-spice. Incredibly spicy, and it'll give everyone ring-of-fire ;)

Ewww, this has turned into a "how not to get invited to the next potluck" thread

Here's a good one....

Buy a tub of frozen mini profiteroles (cream puffs) and a jar of good chocolate sauce (or make your own with good quality chocolate and fresh cream)....also consider bringing several sauces to dip into, like raspberry, caramel, etc....you will be the hit of the potluck!

They're usually the ones who eat the most !!

BTW, what's with the hate on this thread? I've tried broccoli slaw (basically shredded broccoli stems), and it's damn good....a nice change from cabbage....not too wild about the dressing, but broccoli slaw is dee-lish

A potluck is more than just a bag of chips. Who do you think will do the rest of the cooking. I usually make open faced sandwiches on brown buns. egg salad, tuna or salmon salad or my favorite...mash up a can of klik canned meat with relish and mix with mayo, spread on buns.
Sometimes I make cabbage roll caserole. Its easy to make and filling too. all it takes is fry the hamburger and chopped up onions, In another pot cook 2 cups rice in 4 cups water, no salt. When both are done, mix in a can or jar of saurkraut. Mix all together and put in caserole dish, put in oven for 1 hour, and its ready to go. and this will feed 25 or more. Macaroni and cheese with cut up weiners in it is a hit with children. Hope this is an idea for you. Have fun.

We have a pot luck going on this Saturday. Fellow fishees! It drives me nuts when folks participate in the potluck and bring munchies such as potato chips, cheesies! Always seems to be the same folks who do it too!

My aunt makes that at every single family thing that we have (Broccoli Cole Slaw).... and it is so damn good... it may not sound good but trust me it is.

Also my nana makes these awesome hashbrowns, you just take a bag of frozen hashbrowns, a couple of cans of cream of mushroom or broccoli soup, and lots and lots of cheeeese! Then just put it in a cassaroll dish, shove into the oven and bake until nice and golden brown.

You can also add some like crushed cornflakes or something to the top of it so it makes it even more brown, but that is just to the person who is making it if they want to do that or not.

I discovered those broccoli cole slaw bags about a year ago, and thought they were a great idea, but I haven't seen them for a long time. What stores have them?

If you are busy busy and yet want to do some cooking instead of a bag of chips. Here is one easy one for you.

Buy 2 bags of Japanese Edamame or Chinese green Soybean. Cook as directed on packages. Drain, and while it is still hot, add to 2 tablespoons of good quality soy sauce and some grind black pepper. Toss thoroughly and leave it in the fridge overnight. Toss it for 2 or 3 more times in between time. Just before leaving the house, add a tablespoon of sesames oil and toss it once more. It is easy and yummy yummy.

And well, instead of chips you may consider to bring bagel chips or fresh baked cheese bread sticks.
