Ever come across a woman who said they lived in your own city, but when you IM'ed them, it appears they live in China or Russia...and these aren't scams, these are actual women living in other countries.

Like I PM'ed someone that was signed online already, showed they lived in my own area....but turns out they lived in Russia, I was like "If you live in Russia, then why did you put down that you lived here??

They post with US locations to draw more responses than they would if they just said "Novosibirsk."

You should be able to tell from the bad grammar in the ad - "Hello I am look for the niceing and goodly man ..." Some are better than others, but they're usually very generic.

Also look for photos that look posed, but not like a Glamour Shot or black-and-white portfolio headshot. Usually they'll list their location as the largest city in the region; almost never a suburb. Russians know about Detroit and Chicago, but they don't know about Novi or Hoffman Estates. On sites that include language, they'll usually list "Russian" as one of their spoken languages.

I live in a neighborhood with a large population of Russian immigrants. I can tell if a woman is a local Russian-American because she'll use the name of my town instead of the central city, and she'll include references to places or activities only a local would really know about. Many are Jewish and indicate their religion, something you'll never see from the Russian-Russians.

I'm ready for one of those foreign women. How do you get them to email you? Is there a list or something?

Some are scams and some are not. When they ask you for money, it is a scam. if they say that you must pay their translating service, don't. Scam.

Another big scam are women who claim to be from eithe the US or Western Europe then they are trapped in Nigeria. They want you to help them out by cashing some money orders that they can't cash there for some strange reason. This is called the 419 scam or apart of it.

The money orders are fake but the banks don't know it so they cash them. You then send the money via western union back to the "woman" the same day or next. When the bank finds out that the money orders are fasle, they come back to you asking for the money. Of course you do not have the money, and now you owe the bank thousands of dollars. You could also be put into jail for it is a federal crime.

DON"T GIVE OUT YOUR PERSONAL INFO AND DON"T SEND ANY MONEY TO ANYONE YOU HAVE NOT MET IN PERSON FOR A LONG TIME

Yeah, I have heard about those scams. There is a woman here at POF who had that happen to her by a guy.

i keep getting emails from really hot russian/ukrainian/romainian girls saying they want me to call them. it lists some 44 digit phone number. Im thinking i call once and it will be like some unregulated russian maffia 1-900 style number. the first call will cost me $4,500.

Mostly the fakes seem to want to get you to email them directly (hotmail usually) and then get a legit known email address first. Then the scamming starts, or ID theft.. If you get a POF mail and then POFmail back with no response it usually means one of two things: scam, or you are unbelieveably ugly and they were drunk at the time they mailed.

If you are feeling in the mood, the 419'ers can be a lot of fun. Don't use your normal email though... I haven't yet got one to send ME money yet though. Working on it :)

But there are some nice ones out there who are really genuine. The "getting more responses" point is correct on that score.

Oh yeah I had a few on Dreammates to be exact--3 of them claimed US residency but turned out to be in Ghana or Nigeria. Once I find out they've lied about their residency I take that as grounds for immediate termination.

And one of them had so little respect for my intelligence that she told me she was in South Africa on a modeling contract and gave me a phone number in Nigeria.

Demanding a phone number is often a good tactic in these cases.

Thanks to the posters for letting me know what would have happened had I not taken action.

Hotmail addresses are not geographically traceable but yahoo addresses are. So you can try to force them to use yahoo mail--tell them you hate microsoft or something.

Alot of them are looking for sponsor's in North America who can get them a one-way ticket out of where they are..there are many money scams originating overseas as well...they are really quite easy to spot however, because their stories are so full of holes..

Hmmm..., why go for a green card when you can get a "sucker" to send you money? Every once in a while I'll get an e-mail on FriendFinder from a Russian scammer claiming to live in the USA. I can tell by how they write in English and sometimes even the e-mail they give me (mail.ru is a good clue). They have to be paying members on that site to even look at someone's profile, much less e-mail them. Every time I get an e-mail like that I report them.

Crikey! I must speak up for 'foreign' women. I'm a Brit, a London gal. I am not looking for a green card or a free ticket to The States. I do like to chat with people in other countries, and I enjoy the cultural differences and the language quirks. You Yanks are the ones that want to come over here, I can't go shopping for fear of tripping over Maddona, Gwyneth Paltrow and Micheal Douglas. I've even heard that Brad and Angelina are looking for a house here. The latest report in my newspaper states (I am not making this up) that 100 Americans have claimed asylum here in the UK. Maybe you US guys are chatting me up so that you can come and live in the land of fish and chips. If you do come you had better practice your****Van Dyke impressions. Madonna is nearly there, a couple more years and she'll sound just like our dear Queen. Or maybe she'll still just sound like a queen.

I'm going to be vetting you guys to see what your true intentions are. And if you can't sing all the verses to 'My Old Man's a Dustman' I will know that your motives are not pure.
