| Why do we rate photos so harshly? Posted: 7/19/2006 2:47:21 PM | | I enjoy the "Rate My Picture" function, but I find all too often that I rate the posted photos much higher than their averages--and I wonder, why are we all so harsh in our determinations? Are we all so taken in by the Hollywood / nip 'n tucked / liposuctioned / special lighting / Glamour Shots makeup / PhotoShopped and retouched idealized SHAM of beauty, that the average attractive man or woman appears lackluster and unappealing? | |

I don't think this is the reason.
Unfortunately, some people find cyber space a great place to hide while venting their negativity. (See postings on negativity --- interesting reading.)

| Why do we rate photos so harshly? Posted: 7/19/2006 3:07:09 PM | This has been expressed elsewhere....the general concensus is that people want to save the higher scores for perfection....as if there can only be one '10' in the universe.
I, too tend to score higher than the average if I see something about them that attracts me....and lower if I see something I dont like about them, such as holding a bong in their hand...I know....beat me up for not being fair...but anyone on drugs deserves a zero in my book...no matter how attractive....I know their brain is probably fried...

| Why do we rate photos so harshly? Posted: 7/19/2006 3:14:18 PM | I don't think people do rate them harshly. If 1 is dirt ugly and 10 is I'm goin' to Hollywood, your avarega Joe or Jane falls in between 4 to 6. Now my Ma Ma always told me I was a 10 but she wore glasses and always lied to us. | |

Don't tell a soul, but I just rated you a 10, (twice I think).
Once again, I'm too old and live too far away, but I like ya anyway
Sincerely,

| Why do we rate photos so harshly? Posted: 7/19/2006 4:29:01 PM | I never really understood why that feature was part of the plentyoffish site in the first place. I turned off the feature on my profile once I knew how to do it. Of course, knowing I wasn't "doing it" for the 18-25 yr. olds had a bit to do with it too - so disheartening.

| Why do we rate photos so harshly? Posted: 7/19/2006 7:22:28 PM | hmmm ... what is the point in rating photos??? ... i don't know if anyone has rated mine . don't really care one way or the other .. OH NOOOOOOOOO is vogue doing a PoF photo shoot??? no no no .. get the scum out of the frikkin pond!!! lmao
ok .. i was thinking though .. there are a couple 'fellowfishes' who appear to be identical twins .. i mean right down to the little shiney spot in the corner of those frikkin sunglasses! .. seriously ..!! and since i am aware of the forum rules i just can't divulge with any "ease" either name .. but i do know what at least one of them looks like! lmao
hmm .. maybe the category should be .. rate this pic as believable or b....... i mean unbelievable .. on a scale of 1-10 .. 1 being an absolute fake .. too frikkin obvious it aint you and 10 bein "now THAT is real" .. and of course a score anywhere in between would be droppings of another sort ... lmao ..
so .. when's the photo shoot?
i wont judge you by your mugshot .. if you dont judge me by mine .. of course now if you are stricken with something as serious as brown eyes .. then we may have an issue! .. just not a surface fish i guess..

| Why do we rate photos so harshly? Posted: 7/20/2006 1:45:49 AM | | silksmoke, I gave you a 10, I hope I look that good when I get that age. I really do not care what the masses think of me or how I look, I would care how that one person in my life thought I looked and was. Their vote counts, all others are just killing time. | |

| Why do we rate photos so harshly? Posted: 7/20/2006 5:45:36 AM | | I'm like CDN, when I first got on P.O.F. I was "playing" with the different features to see what they did, etc. Then I quit because I didn't see the point in it, but now it shows a "history" of your voting. I've received a couple of emails stating how "shallow" I was for rating people. I didn't bother to tell them what had really happened. | |

| Why do we rate photos so harshly? Posted: 7/21/2006 4:27:02 PM | | I think that the feature is meant to operate as a sort of pictorial "edit my profile" request. People who post several photos to the site can change which they are having rated and then judge which photos garner more positive responses. | |

| Why do we rate photos so harshly? Posted: 7/22/2006 7:41:49 AM | Hey, I've had a rough decade and it doesn't take much to amuse me ....... so I rated a couple of pictures ... so shoot me
Just kidding ... but I do look for time fillers sometimes ...... (and yes, I do volunteer work too so please don't go there lol)
*note to self* - quit sounding defensive

Silksmoke..
I don't rate photos..I found out that the rating system is flawed, big time..But, If I was rating..You would get a 10..
There are about ten or twelve ladies here who fall into the 10 ratings, IMHO..

| Why do we rate photos so harshly? Posted: 8/28/2006 10:23:22 PM | 1. Most of the people that rate pictures are the younger ones - they rate us older people low cuz we look like chit to them. 2. Many of the people that rate pictures (keep in mind most of them are young) are trying to torpedo others in an attempt to make themselves look better (higher ratings)
This is just my logical guess but - I am thinking that is most of the cause of lower ratings. They look low to us because we come along and (we are use to people our age and what people our age look like) rate them higher than average (an average rating - which was established by young people).

| Why do we rate photos so harshly? Posted: 8/29/2006 8:40:48 AM | Harshly? Why rate them at all? When someone views your profile, they can decide for themselves if they want to contact you or not. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Rating pics without a profile is ridiculous except for those who think that looks are the only thing that matters. | |

| Why do we rate photos so harshly? Posted: 8/29/2006 10:02:17 AM | Yep message 13 has a valid point. I check peoples voting history for various reasons. Sometimes people do find their voting history held against them. BTW I do vote based on not looks, but quality of pic and originality. I also rate on the high side. Why not boost an ego or two aye? | |

| Why do we rate photos so harshly? Posted: 8/29/2006 11:31:10 AM | | I rarely rate pictures, because all you're seeing is the outside and I usually don't have time to actually read the profile anyway. So it's basically "oh, that guy's hot," based purely on his outward appearance, so he gets a 10. The only pictures I ever give a low rating to are the ones that are too dark or too far away. | |

| Why do we rate photos so harshly? Posted: 8/29/2006 11:41:39 AM | I don't rate photos, either... but here's an interesting development(uggh, somebody shoot me before I do any more bad word play things) Since I posted the "treed" Chevy as my lead photo, emails are finding their way into my mailbox; not a torrent LOL, but definitely an uptick in what it was when I had my shining countenance as lead photo! Most want to know how the h*ll I got that truck up there,* and/or how the h*ll I got it down... ( *Once upon a time I had big dreams of competing in NASCAR truck races...) NOT!
Just an interesting sidelight on the photos subject Cindy O
