I do not know if anyone else, but large portions of Queens have been having a blackout for almost a week now, and only now is it national (US) news. It is amazing that if anything happens to Manhattan everyone is like "OH MY!!", but no one cares about the outer boroughs. What a bias, it is sickening. Queens has a higher population than Manhattan.

Want to know what's going on? Ask me, I live here. There are thousands of people who have been without electricity (light, fridge, elevators, hospitals, street lights, subway service) since Monday, and only on Friday did the city bother to start offering any kind of emergency relief. All this in the middle of a major heat wave and now severe thunderstorms. (Beryl left overs, I believe) Of course, these services are being touted on the news, which we can't watch. Also, Queens has a very high number of senior citizen facilites. I personally know of one bedridden older lady who has spent the past 6 days in a dark, unbeearably stuffy 4th floor apartment, who was told that unless she needed a respirator, she'd have to tough it out. I think (I know) that we Queens residents have been incredibly patient and understanding for the most part, unexpected things do happen after all and New Yorkers are troopers, but the fact is that we have been helping each other for the most part as the powers that be seem not to care, and we are finally fed up.
I myself have been lucky, and have taken it upon myself to help others, since no one else seems to be doing it. The parade of people leaving their food, taking showers, cooling off, etc., has been constant. I have lived in third world countries that were more organized than this.

Sorry, after this week, I just had to rant a little. And as far as I know there is no definite end in sight. And you're right, my sister (in another state) had no idea this was going on after 5 whole days.
