Posted: 7/22/2006 10:34:17 PM | I don't know what it is....I can't seem to get my frame of mind out of the fan fiction element. I've written several successful Fan Fics (which get praise galore) but somehow I can't seem to get my mind going on my original ideas. My head is full of a growing list of new stories, yet always seem to end up being put off or blocked by my brain as I continue to think of fan fiction stories!
Batman Beyond, Transformers, Blade Runner, Star Wars....all of my titles seem to be going strong with many readers. Yet for the life of me I can't break away from them to focus on original titles. I'm balancing so many stories at once I find myself unable to keep up with the updates.
Anyone else having this problem or feel hindered by their writing frustrations? | |

Posted: 7/23/2006 5:21:45 PM | I was once a singer. Everyone told me that I had to learn to sing the oldies, the classsics, the hits to be a singer. To get a stage to perform on. I learned all of those songs. But, I would never allow myself to make a living singing them. I had to write my own songs. I had to have my own ideas. That's where immortality as an artist lay. In your own creations. In your own musings. In your own heart.
I was afraid of revealing myself. But, I got over it with time.
I tried to become a writer. I was well into writing a fantasy novel 186 pages. I stopped. I knew that whatever I was trying to accomplish would never be enough to satisfy me. It was not original in it's conception. A few years later I began to write a Vampire book. But, not just another Vampire book, but a story of complete emotional breadth that just happened to have Vampire's and a lot of sex it it. This is my opus. The Life and Death of Michael A.
I am not a professional. But, I could never write the further adventures of Luke Skywalker, or another story for Optimus Prime, or even think to touch on the greatness of the Blade Runner movie. It would be a fine paycheck, and you could have a stable career with that kind of writing but it just wouldn't be mine. Maybe the new story would be mine but there would be universal story laws that you just couldn't change.
Now of course you have a full-fledged career to think about. I have a once in a blue moon hobbie.
As I have gone through life. I have seen people who have tried to become artists yet lack the ability to do original work. I've met many young comic book illustrators who at an early age become great at copying another artists work. Yet, no matter how good the copy work it it's still always going to be a copy. I've met singers and musicians that can play or vocally sound exactly like their idols. Yet, no matter how good you are you are still a wanna be of someone else who came before.
True artists learn their skills. hone thier skills. Learn from their idols. Yet have the ability to take everything that they have learned from outisde and inner sources and channell their own heart and soul into their works. It's this personal, element. The thing that defines the artist as a single important being is his soul. The soul is what makes great art. Every man woman and child on this planet is different in some incredible way. A true artist realizes this fact and then uses his own experiences and heart to create something wholly original.
It is not the measure of a mans talent or his finished work that represents great art. But it is the emotional responses of the viewer or those exposed to his art that makes it great. If this Art is original then that is where legend is born.
What I'm saying is if you want to ever harbor a dream of becoming the next, "Stephen King, or Tolkien, or Anne Rice," My favorite three by the way then you have to find the time to get your original ideas out and start working on them.
Heart, soul, talent, original concept. That's it.

Posted: 4/27/2008 6:44:25 AM | I fully know how this feels. When I was trying to become an illustrator, I kept having trouble drawing anything other than what I liked.
I couldn't stop drawing Transformers for example. Eventually it got frusterating because it was hard to just come up with something different or practice on something original.
My suggestion, don't feel so bad about it. Think of it as your brain juggling with what you know and enjoy.
They say creativity is really putting more than one thing toghether and making something new with it.
Maybe writing these stories can be seen as an experience builder in terms of juggling story themes that you very heavily enjoy. As time goes on you might be better at mixing different themes to make more new original stories.
If you think of it everything has been inspired by something else.
Transformers pretty much is a mix of Star Wars, World war 2, Gijoe, japanese robots, vehicles, etc. Just like how Star wars is medieval fantasy mixed with things like Buck Rodgers if you think of it.
So don't feel bad or let down on it. It will just negate your creativity. Also slowly introduce new ideas into your writing.
There has to be some things unrelated to the shows your a fan of that you enjoy. Think of how you can get themes from those shows you like and merge them with something you like thats unrelated. I think thats the best way to make creativity.
Remember it's going to be hard to have the same sentiment towards your own characters compared to something your a fan of. We all criticize our own ideas thinking they won't compare to someone elses idea were impressed with.
Maybe in part because of how esteemed we put stuff we enjoy. Or it won't be caught on by people as quickly. Well I think this is an issue of why.
This is subjective of course. Though if anything be fine with embracing it. Just slowly gravitate yourself to coming up with new things until it becomes habit. | |

I have written fan fiction based on my ideas for a novel and even a graphic novel along with the sequel trilogy.

Hi OP, The Artist's Way might be a book that helps.
What I do is keep everything I write and as I edit it and rewrite it I have lots which I will use later in different places or different stories, not the place I might have originally have had in mind.
What about if you thought of someone you know in terms of a fictional character and see what you could do with them within your genre. Then move into other people you know, like or dislike, or elements of famous people who interest you. Mix it up all up a bit and let go of the rigidity. You must have lots of good stuff and all of that is your own creation. How about getting a book on characterisation so you can build your own product, post it on a blog and see if people like it? If you can build up a readership someone might be interested in employing you. Write for characters of less well known comics or take side characters from the biggies and take them on their own story and start a spin off. I would have thought it is unlikely that you would ever keep up with the big stories, they are probably written a year in advance so all you will do is react. But all that writing you are doing is valuable if you can engage it differently and be creative about your core concept. But I think you know that.
All of the above makes you more interesting to publishers of your genre. Research how you can get your stuff accepted by the people doing this professionally. They must need stories.

Posted: 12/29/2008 3:27:15 PM | I had this problem too. I found a way to 'beat the problem.' I had so many stories to write about. This nearly made me dizzy with hopes of getting even one story the right way. So here's how I fixed the problem. I found a theme where I was able to tell the story, if only a bit of it, in a sensable way. I created a character named Hillary McKay.
She is a newswoman. While all the stories that were told to the newswoman were actually all the stories which I wanted to write about they becamse brief memos which were either called into Hillary's office, or told to her at a political dinner. I havn't gotten an fans yet. I would like to know what fan fication is. I speculate it is like being a fan of Mary Higgins or Dannielle Steel?

Posted: 12/30/2008 5:37:47 PM | i wrote a lot of fan fiction myself. i found it was a way to get back into writing so that i could move on to original works. I have boxes of original manuscripts since i was 17. I wrote mostly Star Gate SG1 works and did win one award for a cross over. One was my opus of sorts, a StarGate SG1 cross over with McGyver as Richard Dean Anderson plays the lead in both. This novel was over 80,ooo words and took me about a year to write.
I find it is easy to write when you have an established character(s) to write for. Following along with what one already knows about their character, history, personality traits, one can build on it and craft it into something that perhaps, one would like to see this character go to or be involved with.
check out jackfic.com and look for kdthree. Anyway the other thing i do for six years now is a thing called National Novel Writing Month. You have 30 days starting November 1 until 11:59 11-30 to write a 50,000 + word novel from scratch. It can be anything even fan fiction. Mine have all been original works . I have succeeded for 5 out of six years. Last year there was so much going on with my life with some major changes that it just wasn't fun and that is truly the point of the exercise. Google National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo and you will get all the info you need.
I did submit a treatment when they were taking open submission for new SG1 novels and did get my rejection letter. Whoo Hoo! so i did try.
I have dedicated myself to begin submitting a children's book i wrote in 2009. Remenber Dr. Seuss receive 99 rejection letters before he was published! My original work is more adult Fantasy fiction though i have been working on a murder mystery with also a sexual theme for about 4 years now.
So all in all fan fiction is a great place to practice and latter to plagiarizer yourself.

| I'm addicted to writing Fan Fiction!
Posted: 7/16/2009 1:26:09 AM | I got my start in writing from fan fiction way back in the day. Between '95 - '99 I wrote dozens of fan fiction stories and I used the experience to hone my writing skills. It wasn't until early 2008 when I finally decided to take a chance and write an original novel from scratch, but I did it. I did it in three months. (For the first draft. Consecutive revisions took a bit longer.)
Now I actually have a completed book available through several different sources, but it all started from fan fiction.
Keep at it. Seriously. Hone your skills to the point where you're confident you can write an original story from scratch, then... just do it. Clear off all other projects from your desk and work on the one. That's what I did, and I'm happy I did it. | |

Note: Texas Ranger Walker vs. Leather Face is a crossover of the television series Walker Texas Ranger starring Chuck Norris and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003 movie remake). The New Crime Team is a sequel to Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs and True Romance. This is the Quentin Tarantino film crossover. I would pick the Rock to play this undercover cop who goes by Mr. Yellow. The New House of Corpses is a House of 1,000 Corpses/The Devil's Rejects fan fiction. Cobra Returns is my idea of a sequel to Cobra starring Sylvester Stallone. Middle School Cops is my idea of a sequel to Kindergarten Cop starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
