| Dating 21st Century Style on Second Life Posted: 7/26/2006 5:14:13 PM | Hello all...
Please don't think I'm spamming this online game, I've been playing it for the last 6 months, and I feel this would be an excellent way for PofF singles to socialize in a 3-D environment, before taking that leap to meeting in person....There is this online 3-D Virtual Chat World called "Second Life". From the moment you enter the World, you'll discover a vast digital continent, teeming with people, entertainment, experiences and opportunity. In SL you have a digital avatar representative that can socialize with others online. You can even go out on a dinner date! haha...it's wild...anyhow, if anyone is interested in this...reply back and I'll give you more details...just look up "Second Life" on the net...and you'll see what I mean. :0)
Must warn you though....Second Life is a memory hog, and it's available for PCs (1 GHz Pentium III or better, with at least 512MB RAM) with Windows XP (SP2) or Windows 2000 (SP4) and Macs (1 GHz G4 or better, with at least 512MB RAM) with Mac OS X 10.3.9 or higher. The graphics require either an nVidia GeForce 2 or better graphics card or an ATI Radeon 8500 (9000 for Macs) graphics card. A broadband Internet connection is required. Dial-up users will find that their connection speed does not allow them to view the world at anything approaching an acceptable framerate.

| Dating 21st Century Style on Second Life Posted: 7/27/2006 3:07:31 AM | | Oh there is another one out there huh, souds like active worlds, outerworlds, and a couple other I used to frequent four or five years ago. It is basicly like IM but with a lot of people at once. | |

| Dating 21st Century Style on Second Life Posted: 7/27/2006 6:43:26 AM | hehe...yea, exactly, it is like IM'ing but it's with avatars and your in a virtual environment that can be serene, or total outerlimits! It's trippy...people actually get married "in world" ha! Well...personally, I think it's an excellent starting ground, especially for singles, to really get to know one another before actually meeting face to face in real life, at least it would give you both something to talk about! haha! Also, in my opinion, you can experience what eachother could possibly be like in social setting, be it is virtual, but you can take it to another level by adding voice chat to enhance the "virtual" experience...since I've been trying out SL for the past 6 months, I have seen the crossover to RL, where people do get emotionally attachement to one another in SL...it's very interesting, wild, strange way to date...but heck...I've tried it, and I liked it! And...you can even watch the sunrise or sunset together whilst being on a virtual boat...awwwwwww *coughs* bah! :0) | |

| Dating 21st Century Style on Second Life Posted: 10/2/2009 12:49:37 AM | I started on Second Life about three years ago when it really was in severe growing pains. Yes, it's a virtual "world", and no, it's not a game any more than a playground is a game.
I like it because you really can do whatever your imagination and skills allow. For me, that means some costumes, some accessories, some robot avatars, and a lot of tourism. I always like to see what people create, so I've travelled a lot in SL, but after three years, there's no way I've seen 1/1000th of what's there.
Like any tour destination or game, you must follow your interests. People who have no imagination will find it pointless and tedious because there are no directions telling you "What TO Do Next".
I can spend hours in the public design spaces just building things. I agree with another guy that going to the clubs is fun, too. Most people are rather curious to find the crowds and are open to chatting at least for a bit.
I've always been able to run it OK, but years ago there were many griefer attacks that ruined the experience. I tend to visit SL every few months just to wander around a bit, like looking at the new casinos in Las Vegas.

| Dating 21st Century Style on Second Life Posted: 10/3/2009 9:05:19 PM | I'm amazed these things haven't caught on more, especially AW. Twinity is coming up strong and Blue Mars is doing a great job mapping the real world to their vrtual world.
I note that Charlie Neeson is teaching Harvard Law classes in SL, and his daughter Becca is teahching computer classes there. Anybody can sit it. And it's worth it to hear Charlie, he's one of the most impressive poeple I've ever met (uh, in real life).
I suspect one day these things will catch on to a much greater extent than they have now, and will make web pages look, well, very 2D.

| Dating 21st Century Style on Second Life Posted: 10/3/2009 10:47:27 PM | rsx11s, I have only attended scant few "events" in SL. I watched a fashion show online because I couldn't be at home to "attend" in SL. I took a couple of classes on building things. I've attended one concert and a few parties.
Re: SL vs IM. IM is too quick and easy. Until you can join a virtual world environment with the 2-click ease that you can start a chat, IM WILL RULE SOCIAL CONNECTIVITY. It's about the communication, not the environment. That's why chat is monster huge on cell phones, ipods, AND computers --- it's just about being in touch, NOT the app that connects you.
Re: SL vs. web pages Web pages will dominate information delivery, advertising and shopping for the very same reason that PAPER will never go away. It's too damn easy. Again, if you can pull up a very specific list of what you seek on ebay, Amazon, Craigslist or wherever, why bother with avatars and virtual streets to walk around -- that's just as slow as real life! Yawn.....
However, I believe virtual worlds will become much much more common tools for geographically related searches. I welcomed Google Earth with open arms because I "got" it right away. You can search the entire world the exact same way you search your neighborhood for the nearest McDonalds -- you simply GO THERE and start looking around. This is an intuitive no-brainer way to look for things. It's very inefficient, yes, but the search becomes a physical task rather than a trick of "hot terms" that people have trouble guessing. I want to know where to each dinner the first time I'm in a new town on vacation? I just go there on Google Earth, turn on the labels for restaurants, then use Google Street view to look at the actual sign so I'll recognize the environment when I get there. I LOVE THAT!
But I don't need an avatar to do that. I don't need to talk to anyone in the virtual world to do that.

| Dating 21st Century Style on Second Life Posted: 10/7/2009 11:06:56 PM | Yes, I have heard of SL, and have seen it demoed.
It is not promoted as a singles site or a chat site ...... but it is a virtual social network, where you can learn about different people, things and places. Just like you can meet people through these forums, you could meet people through SL, But, it's intent was not as a singles site. From what I can see it is a means to socialize with people around the world from your home!
I haven't been on it yet ...... will sometime in the future ....... out of curiosity ..... I guess I am not used to the virtual avatar way of traveling through virtual space! ... not yet at any rate!
... I believe you can teleport ........ then you "fly" around ....... don't quite understand why this flying around stuff! .. very sci-fi-ish!
I also am not sure if you have to pay to create an island there ........ it is a "universe" of islands ...... interesting concept .......
