I had a friend that came from Italy this weekend so I took her to little Italy for pizza and she told me that the pizza was not that great and it is one of the best pizza I been having for years, I checked out so many but there all crap, my friend told me that restaurants here in Montreal do not put there heart into the quality and taste in there pizza, It’s more like volume taste instead of quality taste, What happened to the great pizza in Montreal?

| What happened to the great pizza in Montreal? Posted: 7/31/2006 2:27:20 PM | | Last Friday, a few colleagues of mine and myself ordered from a pastry shop, but they are more than a pastry shop.. It is on Jean Talon Market. It is called Motta. Don't know the exact address but it is on a small street south of Jean Talon st. I shared a pizza with a colleague who is italian. gee, I did not even tell her when we ordered that I totally dislike the after taste of olive oil. well guess what it was the best pizza I had in such a long time!!! We said now, every pay, we order!!! The one I had, had fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, olive oil, and spinach. of course the sauce and cheese!! I am surrounded with italians at work. and they are picky and they just love that place!!! and Little Italy is so close from that place.... | |

I know which place you are talking about for sure:
Motta 514-270-5952 303, avenue Mozart Est, Montréal, QC H2S 1B8
They have THE most amazing cannoli by the way...they have great pastries and cold cuts and stuff! The pizzas are very tasty for sure...I've had a few to go from there. :)

Posted: 8/1/2006 8:19:24 AM | | i'm a fan of food so i can confidently answer this inquiry, montreal basically has only two top tier pizza places: dei compari at 1668 st. denis and pizzelli at 4250 st.denis. i prefer compari, the quality of all the menu is superb.

| What happened to the great pizza in Montreal? Posted: 8/1/2006 1:42:12 PM | Hello Poetica!!
Guess what.. today at work, my italian co-worker decided to order again from Motta.. As the girl I shared a pizza with was not there, I shared another kind with that guy.. gee. That was amazing!!!
For the pastries, I live across the street from an amazing French pastry. and .. I don't go there so often, because I take care of what I eat (well people compliment that I had lost so much weight!!) but they were closed for the past two weeks. And I have a craving for their chocolate eclairs made with REAL whipped cream.
Concerning Motta, well, at Christmas, the whole work team ordered sort of a buffet. We had two choices of pasta. We had the tortellini with rosé sauce, and penne with meat sauce. that was good too.

| What happened to the great pizza in Montreal? Posted: 8/6/2006 5:56:54 AM | Like any other North American city, Montreal has two grades of pizza:
1) Lower food cost and quality to a point where they can hang a neon 99 cent slice sign in the window like the competition.
2) Make the best product at the expense of that sign.
Some good #2s in my neighborhood are: Pendeli's Pizza (Cote St Luc rd) B&M (one on Somerled and take out on Sherbrooke W, both NDG) Cozie's (Somerled)

| What happened to the great pizza in Montreal? Posted: 8/6/2006 9:28:02 PM | This weekend I checked out Motta’s, after 20 minutes of driving around and I finally got a parking spot. I had the pizza, it was good but they don’t have the thin crust style but I can’t complain, it was a good tasting pizza but will I want to go back, No, it’s good but not good enough to go back. But the canolli I liked, maybe I’ll go back for the cannolis.
On Sunday drove to St.Denis street, I wanted to go try Pizzelli’s but there was a few gay’s wearing woman’s clothes blocking traffic kissing on the street and also no parking, so after circling the block countless times I got discouraged and my appetite got discouraged seeing men in braziers kissing so was turned off a left the naborhood, I don't care if men want to kiss but i hate it when there is cars passing by with little children seeing that kind of behavier, so I decided to go to Elio’s Pizzeria, I had a great pizza, I would go back to have pizza at Elio’s for sure.
What ever I say in these forums is not meant to promote business or hurt anyone’s feeling or discriminations; it is simply my point of view, just like many here giving my opinion saying my $0.02.

| What happened to the great pizza in Montreal? Posted: 8/7/2006 10:35:26 AM | | Elio Pizzeria is located in the little Italy sector at 351, rue de Bellechasse, Montréal, QC H2S 1X1, Tel. : 514-276-5341, it’s one street west of St-Denis, you have to go early if you don’t want to wait in line for a seat, on Fridays, Saturday and Sundays, from 6:00 PM till 9:00 PM you will have to wait in line to get a seat but the parking is great, you have a private parking for just Elios across the street. I been going there since I was 15 years old, I am now 49 and still love it there. The best cannelloni and the best rigatoni in the oven I ever had. And the pizza is fantastic. | |

| What happened to the great pizza in Montreal? Posted: 8/9/2006 10:01:27 PM | The problem is the "Olive Gardening" of Montreal's once great pizzaria scene. For sure the Olive Garden chain of restaurants don't exist in Montreal (yet?), but there are plenty of cardboard tasting fast food pizza joints to go around (only real "mom & pop" pizza parlors deserve the moniker of pizzaria).
First step to great pizza...just say no to the corporate juggernauts like Pizza Pizza, Pizza Hut, Dominoe's, Boston Pizza...et al. Then, take a walk down the street to a Pendeli's or other true mom and pop pizzaria where they actually roll, flip, spin, and knead the dough, and add the best sauces and toppings. It sure beats pre-made in a factory doesn't it?
Pizza used to be an art, a treat to be enjoyed....guess what? It still can be.
Oh yeah - Scatterbrain, don't worry about your friend from Italy...she's only used to the world's best. I'm certain ANY pizza will pale in comparison whether it's from Montreal, New York, or Chicago.
...and that's my 2 cents.

| What happened to the great pizza in Montreal? Posted: 8/10/2006 4:02:32 PM | I have been to Olive Garden, in Ottawa in the early 90's. It was good, but I was not quite impressed. The restaurant did not stay open for a long time.
Funny, still in Ottawa. There was that restaurant in the middle of Rideau Centre. Called Movenpick Market (we had one for few years at Place Ville Marie). But the one in Rideau Centre, had a wood burning oven and the toppings were the fresher toppings. I loved it there. The one in Montreal was only gas oven.. not quite the same thing.
Once in New York, there was that restaurant, Woody Allen's favorite. On Bleeker st. Also had a wood burning oven. On the walls you could see pictures of the owner with a lot of celebrities ( I wanted to steal the Hall & Oates one!!!) Don't know if it is still there. It was great. thin crust.. It was called Johnny's Pizza.

| What happened to the great pizza in Montreal? Posted: 8/15/2006 3:31:30 PM | I am an avowed pizzaholic and montrealer and I know what you mean. one thing I have seen is that alot of pizza places have been bought out by persians and kurds and arabs etc. Now I have nothing against these peoples, I love persian food but none of them know what a pizza is supposed to tase like, they spice the sauce funny, they use cheep cheese and lousy quality dough that is as thin and flavourfull as cardbourd so they can 2fer pizza.
Bleahhh, as is usual and has been mentioned, the reduction of food to cardboard is a common thing.
one of my favorite pizza's was always Place tavere in pierrefods and dorval, as a kid, Luna pizza was good too but it has been years since I had it.
you need to shop around some.

I posted about some excellent and tasty pizza I tried at one place. It's not your traditional Italian pizza...but it is very savoury!
"I went to a place recently that was a great place for a first date, I think.
Resto-Bar Terrasse Le Pierrot 104, rue Saint-Paul Est, Montréal, QC H2Y 1G6 Tel. : 514-861-4311 (in Old Montreal)
I went there for lunch and it was wonderful. Basically, the whole place looked like it was a terrace....open air even on the top floor....lots of lush plants and greenery. Old Montreal is a great place to go in general....you can stroll along the area afterwards. I had a Chicken Sesame Pizza there that was so incredibly tasty....and they had an affordable selection , I thought.
It was a fun place to find...just happened to walk past it and it seemed worth checking out!"
Great pizza for people who like to experiment!

| What happened to the great pizza in Montreal? Posted: 8/17/2006 7:50:55 PM | Hello again pizza lovers!
I just thought I would mention something else concerning the Italian pizza in Italy versus Italian pizza in Montreal debate.
The dairy products and the very water itself is different in Italy. Whatever cheeses people use in Montreal are just never going to taste the same as pizza in Italy for this very reason. That's also why cappucinos in Montreal will never taste the same as the heavenly ones in Italy. If you've tasted caps in Italy, then you know what I mean.
Last time I went to Italy, I brought back a whole bunch of fresh coffee, intending to make the same tasty espresso I had when I visited Italy. Alas, our water is very different and the espresso just did not compare at all to the same brew in Italy.
Just a thought.
