Posted: 8/3/2006 2:40:51 PM | | I am curious as to what you fellow fish think about speed dating- I have never tried it but I would think that it is better to meet someone right away in person and then decide if we want to pursue a relationship. I have been trying this internet dating for quite sometime now and I think a lot of time is wasted with a bunch of emails and talking on the phone- it's when you actually meet in person that you realize if there is any "chemistry" or not. I would like to hear your opinions on this subject- thanks! By the way, I never see speed-dating for people in my age group because I guess the younger generation think we should sit in a rocking chair all day and wait to push up daisies but I still have a lot of living to do. | |

I can appreciate the value for those that have problem breaking the ice .. but don't you girls think .. its always nicer when love just happens by accident?

Posted: 8/3/2006 3:00:56 PM | hmm.. i have never done the "speed dating" thing.. i can't judge anything i've never tried .. but i can imagine it would be exciting, fun and even a little scarey possibly .. not sure i'd call an activity that others enjoy pathetic .. and there are #'s who appear to get something out of the "6 minute interview" .. who knows .. i'd try anything once .. ok .. almost anything .. !  .. | |

Posted: 8/3/2006 3:55:42 PM | What do I think of speed dating??? Well, I believe it is appropriately named...because if you do happen to hook up...you will have a quick date...and likely never see that person again.
The process of deliberately going into a room full of prospective men...to chat with each of them, for just a few short minutes..and then pick one you connect with,is kind of like looking down as you walk along a forest path...and finding a million dollars...not very likely it will happen.
I prefer the old fashioned one on one way...it may be outdated...but it works for me.

Think she said it best.
After joining many POF'ers at the Guiness Record for speed dating, I went with no expectations other then that. Speed dating allows you to meet and greet many people you wouldn't have otherwise. If any sparks start flying, all the better, if not, at least you got out for a night and met some new people.
While the idea seems moronic for some [one idea won't appeal to the whole] it does have its appeal for the above reasons. Its a little more of a stretch of your neck out there, but I figure if we're here on POF looking for that special someone, we're already sticking our necks out there with our poles!

Some men had little notebooks with their questions jotted down and some of them just 'winged it'. I had one rather attractive man look me right in the eye and asked me, "why is it when we marry you women, you all of a sudden turn ugly?". No, I'm not kidding, he actually said that! I gave him the raised eyebrow, "are you kidding me?" expression. And for this I paid $45. Yep, as J.T. Barnum said, there's one born every minute! Wasn't a total loss, I met a very nice woman, we talked to each other like we were old girlfriends, but we didn't stay in touch. That became the joke of my friends, "yes, zippy went to speed dating and met a woman!" Yeah, we laughed about that one for a long time! Har-de-har. | |

I couldn't agree more, livenlaffin. No, speed dating's not for me at all - I prefer to develop friendships through the forums and e-mails and dating comes farther on in my knowing a person, rather than closer to the beginning. But that's just my own way of doing it - my own personal preference. But I figure if there's enough people interested in speed dating to try to set a Guinness record (the book, not the beer, right?) then there must be something about it that works for others. No, I won't be at one of these extravaganzas, but I don't think I want to criticize those who are. Cause I think intolerance of other peoples' opinions and methods of living has a lot to do with what's wrong everywhere right now.
So, as livenlaffin says - Happy casting, everyone ... however you choose to do it.

Posted: 8/4/2006 5:05:27 AM | WELLLLL..... I went to a singles mingle with some gal pals, which in itself, was a new thing for me. Speed dating was one of the "highlighted" activities. The girls all wanted to check it out, so I went along for the ride. I felt ill at ease [especially when the next guy up was my best friend's brother - jaysus]. It was filled with awkward silences, sidelong surreptitious glances at various of my body parts from across the table and just general discomfort. You knew the barbies were going to be the ones walking out with a date [not that I'm any slouch in the looks department - but c'mon guys!!!]
I tried it - I did not find it a way to be taken seriously for ME. Some might enjoy that type of thing, but I tend to agree with some of yall that it really is quite a shallow way to meet people.
