Nudism vs Naturism.....What's the Difference ?Page 1 of 2    (1, 2)
I have been a Nudist / Naturist for several years and occasionally go camping at a Nudist resort. On several occasions the discussion on the differences of Nudism vs Naturism has come up. Each time people have different views on what the difference is. Can anybody tell me what the difference is ?

A nudist is simply someone that likes being nude

a naturalist ( or naturism as you called it ) goes way deeper.. they wont have peircings or tattoo's or die their hair or eat foods with chemicals .. their clothes are not synthetic .. it is a full lifestyle of behaviour and not just of clothing optional.

Does anyone ever research these things, before spouting off?

From the Internet dictionary....

naturism

n : going without clothes as a social practice

naturalist

n 1: an advocate of the doctrine that the world can be understood in scientific terms 2: a biologist knowledgeable about natural history (especially botany and zoology)

"As you called it"??? My word, could anyone be further from the truth? rofl

Good evening westcoastgal

You mentioned in your post that there are only 2 Nudist resorts in Canada. Just to let you know that there are at least 5 Nudist resorts in Ontario that I know of. I am sure that there are more that I haven't discovered yet.

You were right about it being alot of fun. It is. Some people are a little shy the first time they try it but most become hooked after their first or second time to the resort.

When people are born, we are all naked...People in the old days, they had no clothes to wear...Looking at some of the African tribes on Discovery channel for examples, you will see that they don't have any clothes on them at all...When we take shower, we are all naked... I don't see much of a different between nudism vs naturism at all. Although I did see the definition of each term, I still think that if you want to be naked. Then just do it.

There is no difference as far as I know...

It's a 'terms' thing.

"Nude(ism)" has more negative aspects, it's rude or something.

Natur(e)(ism) you are just at one with the environment and other people.

It's just perceived in a less negative way so it became more popular.

OP...nudism vs naturism...NOT naturalism which includes hunters and fishermen, i.e. like being out of doors in nature, as apposed to nudism and naturism...

In my definition, naturism is the total enjoyment of being outdoors in a natural way, like being naked. For me, I'm a nudist and love to be socially nude, but I am also a naturist and love being naked in the outdoors.

In the Toronto/Chatham area: Ponderosa, The Four Seasons, Bare Oaks, Glen Echo, Sunny Glades.

The traditional view is that Naturists prefer the outdoors and communing with nature. Nudists, not so much. And Naturists prefer to camp out in the wilderness. Nudists prefer to camp out at a clothing optional Holiday Inn. In addition, nudism is the term most familiar in the U.S. and Naturism is the term most used in Europe.

But any word means whatever two communicators want it to mean. When more than two communicators are involved, it helps if everybody agrees on one definition. But definitions change over time. Take "Gay" for instance. Fifty years ago it meant one thing, now it means something totally different. And there was a short interim period which was confusing and convoluted for the term "Gay". I think Nudist (Nudism) and Naturist (Naturism) are in the same process of change and at this point in time there seems to be no consensus on the two. Taking a poll among the general population would produce mixed results and so would a poll among people who consider themselves Nudists or Naturists. Granted many nudists and naturists have definite opinions on the subject but I think even they would agree that disagreement is more prevalent now than it has ever been.

My suggestion: wait to see which term is used by the person you're communicating with and go with that one.

A nudist is someone who liked to be nude because they like being nude. A naturist is someone who calls being naked natural so they don't sound like they are naked just because they like being nude.

How come nudists are almost always older, heavier people that nobody really wants to see naked?

I guess it depends on the location. I'm old now, but I've been going to the same nude beach for about 30 years, so I was young when I started. At that beach, the people seem to vary in age and size/fitness almost along the same lines as the general population. Maybe a slight skew toward a bit thinner/fitter, because getting to that particular beach involves a fairly significant hike. I've never been to another nude or clothing-optional site.

I've been to a few. Seems to me they're about the same as any other beach except, obviously, people aren't wearing bathing suits and. not so obviously, people seem to be a bit friendlier and leave the beach cleaner when they leave. I think the "old and fat" notion comes from unrealized expectations. There may be some exceptions but take Black's for instance on a crowded weekend. If you can imagine those thousands of people all in swim suits, they're all sizes ,all ages, families, singles, whatever. It's just another day at the beach (as it were).

I am not wearing any clothes while I am typing this, it is too frigging warm over here. Does that make me a nude or natural? lol
In some places, due to climate, it is natural for people to be nude or almost nude. And unless climate change is addressed and the Earth temp does rise 3-4 degrees, then most of the planet will become a natural beach for nudists or nude beacj for naturalists! Naturally. And among other things, conservatives/puritans will freak out. !!!

I like being nude so I consider myself a nudist, although I realise clothes are a practical necessity. But naturists hate the idea of clothes at all and would like to live their lives naked. I think that's the difference
