Used Bookstores in Toronto....Page 1 of 1
Ok, I love to read but haven't been able to really explore the city for some bookstores. Chapters is kinda expensive to go to all the time, so I was hoping someone could help me out and recommend a few?

I don't think I saw anything in the rules against this type of thread, so if I missed the meaning of one, let me know, mods!

haven't done the used book store tour in toronto for ages and a lot of the ones i used to frequent are long gone. Pages on queen was a favourite ... and there's always the good ol' World's Biggest Book Store! (it IS still there, isn't it???)

really you just need to get out and wander - they're "bound" to be all over the place.

gawd, i kill me!! what a freakin' punster!! (k, it was stupid ...)

Be careful of what used book store you walk into. lol 7 yrs ago I was in Toronto and I decided to take a walk around and find a used book store. Walked into a small one, found a book, and realized that there was no one in that section to pay. Noticed a walkway between the shelves, looked through it only to find a sex shop like none I had seen before. Now if I could only remember where it was! lol

Cool, thanx....I've seen a couple of these (I think the worlds biggest only sells new stuff...Could be wrong)......Just looking for a shop with a little nostalgia to it.....I like a little vibe type feel to my books, ya know? I'll have to check out the side street ones.....The Library never has anything good......

The Great Escape on Kingston rd. west of Victoria Park. Small shop, shelves to the ceiling, very little room between racks. Good selections

There are a couple of good ones... I think there's one called BVM (don't quote me on that, though) on Elm St, besides World's Biggest Bookstore. There's also another location on Yonge St, at Eglinton.

There's a chain for used books called BMV. There's one practicallly next door to World's Biggest, and another at Yonge & Eglinton...not sure where the others are, or if there are any others.

They are pretty good. Good selection on a variety of topics and genres.

I find Orion Books around Yonge & Wellesley pretty good too. It's an insitution on Yonge.

I'd also recommend going down Yonge Street, south of Wellesley in particular. Orion Books is absolutely amazing, as is Elliot's (which is just north of Wellesley).

There used to be a fabulous one on Queen Street years ago, but it's been turned into a Condom shop.

Or try going to any of the University Bookstores - they usually have some very excellent books on sale.

Wow,
this thread is awesome. Shit, I've been looking for different used book stores for a long time. The one next to the World's Biggest Bookstore is pretty good.
Recently I have been finding some very very rare used and new books on amazon.com for very cheap. Its kinda surprising. But if you prefer the hunt and stroll, then used book stores should be more fun for you.

Bmv beside the worlds biggest bookstore is better for dvd's and periodicals.
The one just north of Eglington on yonge st. is the main store and can help you out if there is something you are trying to find. More rare stuff there too it is in a higher income neighbourhood.

BMV opened up a new "branch" in the Annex nearly a year ago, on Bloor between Bathurst and Spadina. It's really large with two levels of browsing.

There's a really nice little used book shop on Harbord, just west of Spadina, which sells hard to find books and rare academic texts - called Atticus Books I believe, across the street from the Toronto Women's Bookstore.

someone already mentioned goodwill...unbelievable selection of books(most of which have never been opened)
chapters on-line is another great place especially the bargain best sellers you can get 5 or 6 good reads for under 40bucks and receive free shipping

BMV has 2 locations, one near Spadina & Bloor, the other near the worlds biggest (Stands for Books Music and Video)
There's a few used bookstores on Queen St E. just West of Spadina and East of Bathurst on the south side.

There's one just SOUTH of Baldwin street. North of D'Arcy St west side of McCaul.

There are a few on College as well. East of Bathurst and West of Ossington. I remember one near Grace st.

hope this helps.

Biggie, there are three BMV's within the confines of the old borders of the City of Toronto - Yonge & Eglinton, next to World's Biggest, and the one in the Annex.

Any major street within the old City of Toronto will have a selection of used bookstores. Many libraries also have sales each year, clearing out old stuff, to make way for new inventory. And for those who would like to donate books, the Toronto Public Library also accepts donations - just need to drop them off at one of the larger libraries like North York Central and Northern District.

Used bookstores are like nirvana to me...I love them. I could lose hours in one...but, they are a little dangerous for me since I have gone through cycles of owning too many books with no where to put them...my book shelf runneth over. I recently sold most of my books over craigslist before I moved to a much smaller place. I know you can get great deals on books over the internet but nothing beats browsing in person at a second hand shop. I have found some very cool older books that I would never had heard about otherwise. I usually head to the Annex or the Yonge Street strip for second hand bookstores.

I'm not kidding you one of the best used bookstores in T.O. is the Goodwill on St.Clair near Bathurst (On the south side of St.Clair, west of Vaughan Rd.) I've found tonnes of good books that look like they've been barely used for as cheap as $1 each! I think its because near Forest Hill... anyways I found my favourite book, An Anthropologist on Mars by Oliver Sacks in hardcover for $2 when it normally goes for $30. I found 2 copies of Memoirs of a Geisha and a few Anne Rice books, Tolstoy and J.D. Salinger and some from Oprah's book club as well. Check it out! Bring $10 and you'll have lots to read!

I love Eliots Bookshop .. north of Wellesley on the west side of Yonge. Good prices, classy owner, and they pay good prices for your gently read books. Recycle the books you don't read anymore and read something new.
