| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 8/17/2006 2:15:39 PM | I have had Post Traumatic Fibromyalgia since a back injury in 1998.....
Definitely exercise! I started with Water Aerobics....
A good diet is of course necessary for any musculoskeletal disease. A low stress environment and fresh air and lots of good clean water.....Lemon added to water is good especially after exercise....Message is also nice and the best one for this is myofascial release. Weight management is also important to relieve stress from the bones and joints.
And be sure to get plenty of good rest! Even if you have to take something sometimes....The restless leg syndrome is especially troublesome to fibromyalgia and treated with Elavil which also promotes sleep.....

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 8/17/2006 10:49:29 PM | Thank you so much for the advice. I have to admit I struggle with my weight and sleeping for any length of time. Is Elavil available over the counter?
I will try to address both of those issues as well as indulge in a massage :o)
Thanks again for your help, I feel like such an old crock when I cant do the things I want to because of this.
I think its time for me to start controlling it, instead of it controlling me! Karen x

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 8/18/2006 5:32:52 AM | | OP Elavil is a prescription drug. Also my housemate has fibro and he's had great success with going to the gym. He said it was hard at first, but now that he's in the routine of it, his fibro is much better and the odd time it does get to him, it's much milder than it used to be. | |

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 8/26/2006 5:45:20 PM | Curious...how were you clinically diagnosed? As far as I have knowledge of FM, it includes that there is no diagnostic tool/test that can diagnose if one has FM.... is there something new??

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 8/26/2006 6:52:18 PM | I recommend finding a good alternative/holistic doctor who is experienced in this area. Western medicine tends to try to treat the symptoms through anti-depressants and pain medications. In other words, you are doomed to a lifetime of addictive drugs. Holistic doctors tend to look deeper often prescribing holistic treatments that can not only ease the symptoms, but may actually heal you.
Do some google searches on Fibromyalgia (FMS) as well as Chronic Fatigues Syndrome (CFS) which is closely related. Accompany your searches with such words as holistic, natural, fatigued to fantastic, etc.
Good luck. I hope you feel better soon.

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 8/29/2006 8:32:33 AM | Just wanted to check in and say thanks to those people that have come up with suggestions. I will certainly look into them.
In reply to AngelicSmiles, you are right there is no test that can be done to establish that you have this, however after several years of being referred to rheumatoid specialists and having what I can only imagine to be every blood test known to man, this is what they came up with.
All of my symptoms are covered under "FM" list and I also hit the roof when most of the tell tale pressure points are pressed.
Obviously I couldnt diagnose myself, all I knew was that there was something wrong. I have to trust what the doctors say and hope that I can find something to ease the symptoms and works for me.
Thanks Karen x | |

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 9/1/2006 3:13:18 PM | Former pharmacy tech. here.Elavil is an archaic drug with a LOT OF SIDE EFFECTS.Check with your doctor.Rivotril, generic clonazepam is used for nerve pain and restless leg syndrome. It's classified as a benzodiazepine and will help you get the sleep you need. With all meds like these, there is an adjustment period for the body. You will find yourself tired, sluggish, confused etc.Do not drive until you know how these drugs will affect you.Good luck!Another thing that works well is an aromatherapy massage. The blend of oils help to stop the pain so the massage therapist can work on you a little deeper without feeling excrutiating pain.

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 9/1/2006 5:03:13 PM | the above poster IS correct; ihave been on low dose clonazepam since 93; a quarter of a tab 2x daily works best for me.
in the midst of a nasty "flare" half a tab of flexeril and then i can get massage therapy at least 2x per week, more if necessary, work beautifully. thankfully i have good insurance!
and the pressure points test is always pretty accurate for me, i know to get better rest and eat right when i feel the dragon approaching now.
best of luck to you, OP in your search for answers and relief; i do hope you've had a chance top check out the other threads on this subject; SO MUCH info and support is in them regarding fibromyalgia...

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 9/8/2006 11:59:53 PM | Hi Karen, after 7 years of suffering and trying everything the doctors and everyone else suggested, ...everything is under control....and the majority is natural: -Take 3x per day 1300 mg Glucosimine, Chondroitin, with MSM. (all in 1 vitamin pill) This takes aproximately 2 months to feel the full affects, but continue with it.(I call this my miracle pill, the first that's ever worked) -Low dose(50mg) Trazodone helps you sleep and for pain. For some reason, this low of dose works for Fibro sufferers, but not for non. Rarely any side affects. -Exercise....but build up slow,....if you over-do one day, you will be in too much pain the next to do the exercise. -Massage is great, but be sure the masseuse is aware of your fibro. Massage too hard and it will feel like he/she beat you later (trust me on that one, )
Since I've done this, I'm back to hiking in the mountains behind my home 1 1/2 hours every day; fishing; camping; hunting;swimming.....prior to this,...I got to the point I was barely walking with a cane.
Take Care!! | |

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 11/2/2006 3:41:59 PM | | Try the website fmaware.org. This is the National Fibromyalgia Association's site. They have some very helpful information. I agree with most of the information listed above. Proper diet is obviously an important factor, along with moderate exercise. Massage is of benefit and some studies have shown the both accupuncture and chiropractic can help. For anyone curious, there are 12 spots on the back that may be involved with fm, find a knowledgeable doctor for diagnosis. Good luck with the website. | |

| Fibromyalgia - anyone got any handy tips or remedies? Posted: 11/10/2006 11:11:21 PM | I have fybromyalgia also. I have high yeast and interstitual cystitus. Following a diet staying away from caffeine, sugar sodas and anything with nitrates in it like processed meat. I usually have to get up and soak in a hot tub of water. The doctor told me to use epsom salt. I know when I eat anything sweet or caffeine or processed meats I hurt really bad. Also eating yeast breads, Pizza and anytime of breads with yeast in them hurt me tremendously. Artifical Sweeteners also. Hope this helps.
Sincerely, Karen | |
