In a matter of 2 weeks I have been approched online by 3 different guys who have a profile with picture, posted saying they are in the US. I started talking with them and then in a matter of time they all of a sudden tell me that their business has taken them to Nigera and they are in need of money to get back to the US.

The first guy claimed he lost his wife and kid in hurricane Katerina
The second, his wife left him for another man and then he met a black woman who took him to Nigeria for a business deal, and ran off with all his money.
The third, lost his wife to breast cancer and he is stuck there with his daughter and needs help cashing a Postal Money Order to get the cash so he can get back to the states.

What the hell. Getting lied to by guys in the US is bad enough, now they are coming out of the wood work from Nigeria! I just wonder if guys are being scammed the same.

What IS it about Nigeria that breeds such disgusting behavior??? I live in Virginia Beach, and was down by the water one day and got a flat tire. Going rate for a used tire around here is $30. Nigerian dude charged me $60!!!!!!!!! Didn't have a choice. Rolled in there with my radial juuuuust about to peel off. Could see it starting. So I wasn't in a position to price compare. Then he had the nerve to give me his business card and suggested I tell my friends. Oh, believe me, I have been. Just for all you locals, he's in the 17th St. area somewhere. Can't remember the exact addy or name of the shop, but you'll recognize the place when you hear the guy talk. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!! Rip-off!!

What is the violation? Just trying to help others beware of this nationa wide scam on women and men. I did research online and looked into this. And found out that this has been going on for a very long time. Hundreds of men and women are being taken advantage of.

We can get on here and talk about oral sex etc but we can't give a heads up on scams? What is this not politically correct?

Please enlighten me here?

I have no doubt all genders are subject to this kind of scamming and many other types as well. I think they believe because we are American or Canandian that we must be loaded and have our extra cash sent to them. Whatever - it happens all the time, just keep some sense.

I have had this happen to me as well. 3 times in the last year. 2 of them told me her mother was from Canada father from Niigera. She was living with her father, now both her
parents are dead and she wanted me to cash a check for her and send her the money right away so she could come here to be with me. funny how they both had the same story.

3rd I believe is a scam but has me off guard. She called to talk to me. told me about
being over there for business and running into trouble. And needing me to cash a money
order and send her back the money. what is putting me off is that she wants money to send it to me, but she is willing to wait for the bank to tell me it is good and has cleared here before i send the money back to her. Picture she sent is signed , but doesn't look likt the name she gave me. so i think she is trying to scam me, but i have doubts.
If i'm right and she is scaming me , she's good at it. I almost decided to send it to her.

FYI: most of the writers of the Nigerian scams are right here in the good ol usa.
Dateline did an expose on a few of the scammers. and they were living in NYC.

Here's is what I do when these scammers contact me the first time:

I reply back to them that I have given thier information to the FBI and USA Homeland security.

http://www.secretservice.gov/financial_crimes.shtml

and then I tell them have a nice day.

(one time a lady said she had kids to take care. I wrote her that if she continued with scams in the usa and lived in the usa and actually had children DCF would be removing them from her custody.)

I don't know what it is ..but none of them EVER contact me again. It must be something I said.

If you get the one with the plane crash you'll have them all.

Still, people fall for it. All over the news, all over the web, TV..... and people fall for it.

Woman here in Ohio lost $250,000. A guy in Florida went for $425,000.

I think that link will lead to how to report those users. I think it was meant as information for you.

You should report them. Weeds need to be taken out.

Another scam - not necessarily Nigerian - is one where someone offers to buy something you've advertised, usually a vehicle. They will send a cashier's check for more than the amount, and ask that you send the difference back to them. They can't send the exact amount as the check is from their client, for whom they're buying the item. The cashier's check is usually on stolen stock, so your bank may honor it as it appears legitimate, but you may be liable for the loss when it doesn't clear. Most of these come from foreign buyers, and the check they send is from a foreign country, so US mail fraud provisions do not apply.

ALWAYS have your bank verify the check before releasing funds (they can call the supposed issuing bank), or have them hold the funds until the check has cleared.

Yet another is that you're contacted about some inheritance from an unknown relative, etc. That you are contacted by email rather than regular or certified mail is an immediate cause for suspicion.

Hey people !!!!

I agree with the report them to the authorities threat .
In the past year I have had 3 attempts and was initially fooled
by the first two . Same ole sad stories . Gorgeous women with pics.
They are fairly crafty and manipulative so obviously it's good to get the
message out and help the unsuspecting .

I used the ( I am a government official ) the second time and that was
a good deterent.

On the 3rd attempt I decided to play along and have some fun .
Here's the funny part !! After following along with the tragic events and
awful happenings of the scammer I announced that I was heading for
Nigeria on some business and was looking for some people to assist me with some
fund raising . I offered them $$$ up front to meet me at the airport -- ha ha ha.
to make a long story short at the end of it when we had arrangements set I dropped the bomb and laughed out loud in there monitors face. That's just me having fun !!

I think the real question going around is --- are they able to hack your PC ??

I had a woman saying she was stuck in a motel in Nigeria and the owner would not let her leave until she paid the balance and it was 19 a day to stay there. She also said she madly loved me and wanted to be with me and asked me for money to pay her hotel room balance a plane ticket here to the states. Well I told her I had sent her by western union a 1,000 dollar check to get back here. I gave her a false account number and some other various false information. She emailed me the next day and asked me how couldl I do something so mean to her. She said the Western Union office said they would have her thrown in jail if she ever come in with a false claim like that again. Well I told her in another email that your not getting a dime from me and your scam is not that convincing and here are the reasons why. First you dont tell a person you are madly in love with them on the second email, second you have been saying you need 1,000 to get a plane ticket to the U.S and to pay off your hotel balance and the plane ticket alone is about 1400.And third you never asked me if I am madly in love with you which I am not for your information.

She kept emailing me after that and I would be all nice and compassionate to her and then another email I would call her the scum of the earth in about 5 to 6 paragraphs. She finally got the hint and quit emailing me.

How YOU could do something so mean?

That's like robbing a bank and asking the cops to give your car a jump start.

Reminds me of some loser on COPS who called 911 because she was trying to buy crack and the kid took her 20 bucks and ran away. She wanted the cops to get her crack money back.

Apparently she has nothing to do until Oxford calls and offers her that scholarship...

That's about as good as the people who contact me about money they have need transfered into the us. or that i inherited a portion of. They even have a nice scam on ebay- saying you have to immediatly contact paypal. when paypal knows nothing about it. or stuff they say your account has to pay for. to get your paypal pass number. I get that scam weekly. Like ebay said if there is trouble with you paypal account. we will only contact you through our messages on ebay. not in your personal email address. But damn those phony paypal notices look so real. Fell for it once. And had to get a new card and everything ( I was lucky I had no money in my paypal account) Just goes to show you don't ever give your internet passwords or codes to anyone! cheryl

The Nigerian scam is the oldest spam game to phish for personal information with spam e-mail. Never ever give your bank account number to anyone. Once that number is had, it is the easiest thing in the world to turn it against you. They'll make up any excuse to get your bank account number and steal all your money. I basically report all such mail the spam@uce.gov

Can't find the link for it right now, but there's a group of people who have turned scamming the scammers into a competition. Tell the scammer that you would be happy to process the transaction for them, but it would require them to send some kind of "collateral" or processing fee, be it a picture of them holding a sign with your name on it or money. I wish I could find that link.

Ah, finally somewhere to vent my shame. lol I got suckered real good last winter. Not from anyone on pof and not from Nigeria. It was a lady from Cameroon. It began simply enough as she contacted me via a christian singles site. It was just chat for the longest time emailing. Then she told me that she was a missionary in Cameroon working with the pygmie tribe kids. I had no reason to not believe her. Then she said she had planned to move to Canada. Well she was a bit short of cash because she had donated some of her savings to the orphanage. Big dummy here thought it would be a good idea to help her out as she promised to repay me when she got here. Well one issue after another kept happening to her. Like she got sick, then her mom died....
Anyway, thousands of dollars later she disapeared and stopped emailing me claiming she picked up another illness. It was very elaborate and she didn't miss a lot of details. I was in denial for a long time thinking I would hear from her again. Now everytime I see a western union sign I am reminded of my foolishness. Funny thing is that now she has contacted me again on a different web site (not here), with a different picture but the story is the same. I haven't responded. I have nobody to blame but myself. Oh what a dummy. lol
I tried looking for a place online where you could post the people so someone else didn't get caught but I can't find one. Anyway, don't send money to someone you have never seen in person. Some of them are very good at what they do.

Maybe they need a web site for dummies like me where you just send money.

Hi this is the very first time on the forums but I really wanted you all too know that the scams are real I have gotten mixed up with them A family from Nigeria and also some one form the UK, the Family from Nigeria claims that there dad was a king and that he had a heartattack and left his money in a bank and that the governement would not let her have the money that It will go back into the government and that the mother and his sisters were being watched by the governement and that the money would be sent to A security branch for safe keeping until they can find some help from the USA they sent me picutures of themselves and all I fell for it, I had sent them over 2000.00 so that they can get over to USA and then we were going to claim to be next too kin too them and help them get their dead farther's money out of the bank which they said it was over 3 millions dollars well like the other person was saying everytime they contacted me after wiring them money there was always another excuse why they could not come over to the USA finally i got tired of it and demaned my money back and told them I will turn them in to the FBI that is when I had no replys back, Also I listed my car for sale on the internet and this person said that he will be sending me a money order and which he did and the money orders were fake I went to Amcott cashing office and right then and there they came back to tell me that they had been gettting them from all over Florida, Someone is making money orders and they look so real that you could not see the difference from the real ones only the professional can tell the difference, I had to sign a police report stating about the emails and all, they are still trying to catch these people yes we might be dumb for doing this but when you think you can trust someone you can't, so please there are scams, many for them I will never see my money again, so everyone its true If its sounds too good to be true IT IS beleive me you can go on Nigeria's web site and on there you can see thousands of scams emails, and most of the people are from other countries also and also right in the same state as you so please everyone just type in scams in your browers and they type in Nigeria and that will help alot and sence I excepted the fake Money orders I am still being ask questions and that is because I am helping to catch them people and get them off the internet for once and all yes we can become vuluable to them scams but everyone please be careful do not beleive none of them to be true I hope I have helped

I have profiles on a number of dating sites and I am contacted by theses people almost daily, The girls come from all different countries but they all just happen to be in Africa at the moment, sometimes they don't tell you that right away, when you are chatting ask them what the time is there, I had some claiming to be in USA then saying the time was the same as me in UK and Africa, so then you know. The best thing is not to believe any of their elaborate stories, and say from the beginning you will never send money or do any financial things. A good site to look at possible scammers is http://www.romancescam.com/album/index.php loads of pics and names they use.
Keep a look out and keep your hard earned money in your wallet. Never send money to anyone at any time.

You are a complete idiot if you fall for these scams. If you have that type of money to just blow like that donate it to a charity rather then giving it to some scam artist half way around the world.

but it's true! My mother was a queen of nigeria and because the country won't release female money to me her daughter, I do need a strong man to help me get this money. I am very young and very slim, have no baggage, and will pay you back double when I get back to wherever it is you now live that I once called home, there, somewhere. Tell me your hair and skin colour preferances and I'll send you a pic of myself to prove it is really me.
So please send your checks, no actually money orders please, to my post box in Canada. They will forward it to me in Nigeria to save you overseas stamps.
