| Visit of the Dalai Lama: The Vancouver Dialogues September 8-10 Posted: 8/25/2006 8:19:19 PM | Hello friends of Plenty of Fish:
I have been a member of this interesting and vibrant community for one week and would like to pass on an event that you won't want to miss. I saw the Dalai Lama the last time he was in Vancouver and he was so inspiring I began writing my book. We are all here swimming around in this ocean of consciousness called the world looking for love, happiness, and peace. On a rare occasion, the world is blessed with a soul who has transcended human consciousness and comes back to the ocean in a boat to help us find our way. One such person is the Dalai Lama. I am not Buddhist, but as a spiritual seeker I recognize a spiritually great person. We are fortunate to have the Dalai Lama amongst us and I urge you to attend at least one of his dialogues -- towards an understanding of peace, love, and happiness.
You are invited to support the establishment of the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education and experience the Dalai Lama up close in dialogue with leading researchers, educators and policy makers at the inaugural Vancouver Dialogues, September 8 - 10, 2006. Tickets are available for the following events:
NURTURING COMPASSION DATE: Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, 9:00am – 11:30am Location: Orpheum
In an intimate high energy dialogue, high school students engage with the Dalai Lama, sharing their stories of compassion in action. This unique student lead event focuses on nurturing compassion in the realities of their lives.
EDUCATING THE HEART DATE: Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, 1:00pm – 3:45pm Location: Orpheum
The Dalai Lama converses with internationally renowned education leaders, policy makers and researchers about children’s experiences in learning compassion, empathy, and kindness.
HAPPINESS & STRESS AS DETERMINANTS OF MENTAL HEALTH Date: Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, 9:00am – 3:00pm Location: Orpheum
This dialogue will focus primarily on ‘happiness’ and life satisfaction—major factors in enhancing both the mental and physical health of individuals and societies. The Dalai Lama will lead discussions with Deepak Chopra, Michael Meaney, Paul Eckman and other well-known researchers and speakers in the area of happiness and mental health.
CULTIVATING HAPPINESS GM PLACE PUBLIC ADDRESS DATE: Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, 3:30pm – 5:00pm
At this festive event, following the songs and dances of Tibetan children, the Dalai Lama will discuss the causes and conditions for happiness and provide guidance on developing an authentic sense of well-being that is independent of external circumstances.

About the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education
The Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education is committed to the Dalai Lama's vision to "develop the heart, be compassionate, work for peace in your heart and in the world.” The Center will foster and support "education of the heart" and teachings on kindness, compassion and interconnectedness. The Center will provide an educational environment that cultivates mindfulness: the integration of mind, body, and spirit. It will encourage heightened awareness within diverse practices of art and it will offer a venue to examine the world’s wisdom traditions through creative interpretation. Founded in 2005 with the active support of the Dalai Lama, the Center has no religious or political affiliation. It will build upon the Dalai Lama’s unique and compelling appeal as a world figure who reaches out to all people with a message of compassion, kindness and mutual understanding. "The key concepts that define the goals of the Dalai Lama Center are: one, the promotion of human values; and two, the promotion of a sense of oneness within humanity. These two ideas serve to promote peace among different communities within one nation, within one world. And they will be particularly useful in shaping the long-term goals of the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education in Vancouver, Canada." His Holiness the Dalai Lama The Center will be located in the heart of Vancouver and will provide a multi-purpose venue with accessible meeting, lecture and exhibition spaces. It will include a gallery, library, cafe and bookstore among its warm and inviting spaces.
By bringing peace into our own lives, the Center will help to bring peace into the world.

| Visit of the Dalai Lama: The Vancouver Dialogues September 8-10 Posted: 8/25/2006 11:53:13 PM | I wish I could make it to see the dalai lama live. It must be quite rare to be able to actually share a room with a world leader. I have heard that his responses are sometimes a bit too simplistic, so I would relish the chance to experience his presence and observe his ways. | |

| Visit of the Dalai Lama: The Vancouver Dialogues September 8-10 Posted: 8/26/2006 8:38:25 AM | I had an awe inspiring moment while on my trip through Alberta last month... Out in the middle of the Rockies as I was taking pics of my daughter, a red robe in the background caught my eye. It wasn't the Dalai Lama, but one of the higher Lama's that was there on a trip as a spiritual adviser was kind enough to allow us to have a couple fo pics taken with him. It was quite the honour to stand with him amidst the trees and mountains!!
I will have to see if I can make it to see the Dalai Lama while he is in town
(ps-the pic I have with the Lama.. he is wearing sneaker~loved that he was so human!!)

| Visit of the Dalai Lama: The Vancouver Dialogues September 8-10 Posted: 9/10/2006 8:45:46 PM | My daughter spent Friday morning at the Orpheum with the Dalai Lama and it was apparently his first ever dialogue with "only" youth - even youth were the hosts on stage
words to describe him from my 16 year old she said he is "COOL" and "WISE"
did you know that Dalai Lama stands for "Oceans of Wisdom"
I am so blessed to have had this opportunity for my daughter - she too is very wise

| Visit of the Dalai Lama: The Vancouver Dialogues September 8-10 Posted: 9/10/2006 8:49:12 PM | I had a stupid stupid appointment that I couldnt reschedule again - that and I forgot to buy my tickets (I wanted up close and personal tickets ie: front row) back in May. All I could have gotten were nosebleed sections. I'm so mad I promised myself 2 years ago that the next time he came I'd go. I'd be living in Vancouver and I'd be working and able to go. Well, I am in Vancouver (close anyways) and I am working and I could have went if it weren't for the stupid appointment. :( NEXT TIME..swear to God I'll go. | |

^^^^ will you actually be meeting him?
Impossible to know. I don't have an appointment scheduled, lol! I met him at the Art Gallery of Victoria when he accompanied several monks who did butter sculptures that took days. I had read so much about Buddhism and him that I let that get in the way. I understood women were not to touch buddhist monks and that they were not to touch women. So I stood near him but did not approach. I saw all kinds of local women hug him and shake his hand. Still, I could not bring myself to break a code I felt I should adhere to. He heard my loud inner conflict it seems and walked right to me as he was leaving the room. He simply held out his hand and shook mine and my ten year old son's and thanked us for coming. I smiled and thanked him back and then when I turned to walk away he stopped me and said "some boundaries will not be enough to stop you".
I am always interested in what he has to say at these events and in his books. Just as I am interested in the wisdom of the people I serve who have no homes.
