| OTTAWA UNITED SINGLES COFFEE CHATS, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH Posted: 8/28/2006 3:15:01 AM | Thank you to all who attended yesterday's Single's Coffee Chat. We had such a good mix of people attending. I appreciate all your comments on how to improve the next event that will take place on Sept. 10th, and I appreciate your encouragement for organizing the fall single's mega event. It will take place, and be planned according to your growing feedback. Your participation in our POF forum has been in a large part responsible for the good attendance we had, so I hope our discussions here will continue to be meaningful.
Notes:
-Yes, many of us will continue to meet at Starbuck's on Sunday's (any Sunday) at 2 PM even if no event is planned. If this trend becomes popular then we can extend this to other Starbuck's, indeed any coffee shop such as Starbuck's, Wag Cafe....
-Yes, we will continue to wear a black piece of clothing as a quick indentifier
-Regarding the "Talking Pole" idea: Please send me your suggestion for an ideal location for a talking pole in Ottawa.
Thanks again!

| OTTAWA UNITED SINGLES COFFEE CHATS, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH Posted: 8/29/2006 2:50:23 AM | Beer's a good way to attract men at a social, lipstick's another! Agree? Glossy red is my all-time classic favourite. Perhaps we should hold a special taste testing event (sponsored by a beer breweries) where men are invited to taste different beers while judging lipstick models (By the way, this may even attract big name lipstick designers, like Revlon. Pehaps this can stimulate creative new lipstick designs.)
That may be the way to attract men (just kidding of course!). Thanks for your suggestion.

| OTTAWA UNITED SINGLES COFFEE CHATS, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH Posted: 8/29/2006 5:09:28 AM | FAQ: Frequently asked questions about our events:
Q: I would like to attend but I have a babysitter problem on Sundays. A: If others have children perhaps we should organize an event for them, with no alcohol.
Q: Why is it that people of all ages attend your events? A: We should feel comfortable with adults of all ages, and we don't have to date them all.
Q: Why do we meet at Starbuck's? A: Starbuck's the starting point. If the group is small, we stay there. If it's big we go to Montanna's. These places are well known, affordable and wheelchair accessible (Yes, I do want to attract differently-abled single professionals, if I knew how to reach them).
Q: What is the program? A: Each person introduces themselves (30 seconds each), then its a free-for-all
Q: Are ther any rules? A: We should not interrupt each other, criticize each other or monoploize the chat floor.
Q: What is the Fall Ball? A: I am planning a mega single's event for the fall, where I hope to attract no less than 500 males and 500 females.
Q: Can we help somehow? A: Yes, just attend our events, give us feedback on how to improve them, and ask your SINGLE friends to come. We also hope to attract comedians and singers to attend our events. Do you know any who have a repertoire of Romance-based jokes and songs?
Q: Can people from other cities attend? A: By all means, I am seeking volunteers with mini-vans for friends from Hawkesbury, Cornwall and Montreal.
Thank you for all your questions. You may post additional questions here.

| OTTAWA UNITED SINGLES COFFEE CHATS, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH Posted: 8/29/2006 5:49:37 AM | | I would like to volunteer to assist in organising the next big dance party for fall 2006. I think that the over 55 age group needs to become more involved and attend events, as they arise. Sincere Regards | |

| fall ball Posted: 8/29/2006 7:39:40 AM | | it would be nice to try to keep the event from becoming a 'meat market' atmosphere. | |

| OTTAWA UNITED SINGLES COFFEE CHATS, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH Posted: 8/29/2006 8:52:51 AM | | Geoffre, this Sunday I leave it up to people individually, so I do not know who will be there in advance. If you see people wearing black and smiling at you, they are one of us. The next planned event is Sunday, Sept 10th. I am skipping the next Sunday because it is a long weekend and many are too busy then. | |

| OTTAWA UNITED SINGLES COFFEE CHATS, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH Posted: 8/29/2006 9:02:18 AM | Dear Classy Lady. Would you like to represent our 55+ ? If so, then I would be happy to help you recruit them and add something in our program for the Fall Ball that will be meaningful for them (such as music from that generation...). Perhaps we should have others represent other age groups, then the representatives should meet and participate in planning a truly trans-generational event! I intend to hold the Fall Ball at a hotel that has three main halls, each hall has a capacity of about 350 people. So then we can have three age groups. What do you think? Perhaps we can have each age group in each hall, and at the end of the evening we can open all partitions to have one huge hall.
I believe it is possible to create an event that will be meaningful to all people.
Do you have time to devote to this?

| OTTAWA UNITED SINGLES COFFEE CHATS, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH Posted: 8/29/2006 9:19:07 AM | Thank you so much for volunteering for the Fall event. Here are the high priority tasks:
-Recruit SINGLE people who are seeking a long-term and meaningful relationship -Find NON-MONETARY sponsors, ask companies to give gifts at the event
WE ARE NOT HOSTING THIS EVENT FOR PROFIT-MAKING
I HOPE THE EVENT WILL BE:
FREE: This event will be a free event and we will not ask for a liquor license (liabilities...) FUN: We need to attract comedians, singers, talent scouts, media reps. TRANS-GENERATIONAL: I want people from all age groups to attend INCLUSIVE: We need to reach out to the differently-abled and invite them (deaf and mute...) PRACTICAL: We need to invite business people and employers
Please contact me with the details of how you wish to participate in the success of this event.

| OTTAWA UNITED SINGLES COFFEE CHATS, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH Posted: 8/29/2006 10:32:05 AM | I think we should leave it all in one room and maybe do like they do at the "single gourmet" and seat people for dinner (assuming there will be dinner/pot luck) by age group. That way you give the chance for people to mingle with all groups throughout the evening....
Feel free to send a message to discuss further if you like. I am a good organizer...but we might be being a bit ambitious to have it "free" with sponsors, etc... for so soon (Fall)... takes lots of planning... We could solicit from the POF members also - surely there are singles on here with "contacts and or connections"....

| OTTAWA UNITED SINGLES COFFEE CHATS, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH Posted: 8/29/2006 11:35:01 AM | I understand why, with so many people hopefully attending, that you'll need more than one hall. I'm not sure that it will be effective to try to divide people by age groups, though.
Perhaps offering different entertainment in each room, entertainment that would appeal to diverse groups, but not necessarily restricted by age. One room should be quieter so that people can hear themselves talk, too.
You may have a tough time finding a hall that can give you three ballrooms on the same night in the fall, too, especially without a liquour licence. Liquour is where the hotels/caterers make their money.
How do you plan to pay for the ballrooms? Do you have a hotel in mind?
I know that the TravelLodge on Carling has three ballrooms side by side, but that's not in the east end, although it's only a few minutes further on the 417.
Hopefully, I'll make it to the next Starbucks gathering and meet you all!

| OTTAWA UNITED SINGLES COFFEE CHATS, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH Posted: 8/29/2006 1:52:18 PM | | hey, sylvain not all people my age are like me so you willing to sacrafice me to THEM where I get more along with people your age than kids my age lol. I say if 3 halls lets just put a difference kind of music, like one is todays music, the other is oldies, and 1 is chit chat lounge. | |

| OTTAWA UNITED SINGLES COFFEE CHATS, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH Posted: 8/29/2006 2:19:36 PM | Thanks Geoffre for your comments. I am happy to hear that some of you, of all ages, want to mix ages, making it a true inter-generational event. I am very happy about your response.
How about:
Hall 1: A chit-chat coffee hall (well lit) Hall 2: A romantic piano-lounge style hall (dimly lit) Hall 3: A rock-n-roll hall for burning 1000 calories an hour (dark)

| OTTAWA UNITED SINGLES COFFEE CHATS, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH Posted: 8/29/2006 2:31:31 PM | About the liquor license: Dear Summer Dream: I do not want to this event to turn into a nightmare, and if you have 1000 people drinking alcohol, something is bound to happen. I suggest if people want to drink, they do so at the hotel bar, not at the halls where we will have our event. Also, people can have a glass of wine before coming to the Fall Ball.
(I like my Gin and Tonic just like anyone, but we can do without a bar, and the hotels will still have us, trust me. I am saying this out of experience of organizing more events than I have years.)
Here is what I recommend instead: Food Islands that the hotel can prepare for us
Food Islands Examples:
Island 1: Vegan Island Island 2: Carnivore Island Island 3: Dairy Island (Around the world in 88 cheeses) Island 4: Fantasy Island (Tropical desserts) Island 5: Blue Lagoon (the best non-alcoholic drinks)
These islands can also provide an environment where people can meet according to what they like to eat. We can find local sponsors for these islands.

| OTTAWA UNITED SINGLES COFFEE CHATS, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH Posted: 8/29/2006 10:51:01 PM | If you do need any help organizing the Fall Ball then I may be able to help... I've organized alternative dance events for a number of promotion companies and I have most of the sound equipment to give just about any space the right amount of boom to get the bodies moving [and I'm very open to playing different kinds of music]...
I'll try and make it out to a sunday... but I'll probably be the odd man out [who wants to vote me as most likely to be the youngest person there?]

| OTTAWA UNITED SINGLES COFFEE CHATS, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH Posted: 8/31/2006 10:13:25 AM | | Sylvain I was just wondering because you know that Starbuck does cost more than any other place I was just wondering why cant we just make it at a Tim Hortons, even tho I like Starbucks, not everyone is that wealthy lol I've been living on mostly just a little bit, and well next month I hope I get more money, I still got people that didnt pay me for jobs but ya. | |

| OTTAWA UNITED SINGLES COFFEE CHATS, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH Posted: 8/31/2006 5:22:07 PM | Geoffre, even if Starbucks is not my favorite place by a long shot, Chapters is. :) So if I don't manage to find fascinating conversation or company in the coffee-flavored corner, the books are still there to browse and prod. Or to inspire opening lines. Or to help meet like-minded people in a natural 'sort by preference' among the aisles...
Tim Hortons... too tempting and bloating :) Spread bagels are about the only item they have that wink at me. And I prefer the bagel store on Bank for those...

| OTTAWA UNITED SINGLES COFFEE CHATS, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH Posted: 8/31/2006 6:25:11 PM | Well since the topic came up about the venues for the coffee meet and greets, I would like to offer my two cents. I attended the most recent meet and greet amongst about 40-50 people. The venue that is the meeting place is Chapters on Ogilvie Rd, my personal persepection about this venue is this.....1 ) way too small for even 15 people..remember you don't want to take away seating from other guests who want to sit outside. 2) You need to alter the locations so its not always at the same location...add some flare to it...ie pool tables, bar, park. 3) People don't always want to attend a restraurant if there are too many in attendance.
Please don't get me wrong, I think people have fun at the meet and greets but you can only improve the little things for success.
