Gas Prices still a JOKE

I am originally from Ontario, and having watched the news the other day, I really noticed a huge price difference in the Gas. I'm beginning to have a feeling that we are getting hooped out here for no reason. Especially when there's a 30 cent [rice difference. I hope all you gas station owners are proud of yourselves, but I'm on to your little game. It's just pretty sick that you can buy gas in Brampton for 76 cents a litre(population 200 000) where in Burnaby where I live it's still averaging $1.06 a litre. I'm extremely angry over this, and there isn't any justifiable reason for it either. Anyone with me? What are your thoughts on this subject.

The joke is on us for sure.... we get THUMPED because they have the ultimate monopoly... what other industries besides airlines are there where you can arbitrarily crank up pricing???

Makes me want to siphon their surplus and blast it up ........

i agree there's not much we can do about the gas monopoly. that's why when i buy gas i make sure that's all i buy there. no coffee or muffin, no donuts, no pop, no chips or gum.....
just the item that i can't get anywhere else, their gas. it might be a minor thing but i figure i'm not going to give any more of my money to the gas station than i absolutely have to. i'll stop at the corner store for the other stuff if i absolutely can't go without it.

Kindirishman, you sound like you're blaming the gas station operator....but ya know what....most are corporately owned and the price set by head office, not the little guy on the corner. I was talking to a friend of mine who "owns" one and all his profit comes from a "owners fee" that comes as a lump sum to him at the end of the year. It's based on a predetermined sales volume which head office figures out. Whether the price gets jacked up 20 cents in less than a week, that's been the case where I live, he gets his piece of the pie no matter how much the price fluxuates. Even the gas stations that you'd think were independants are somehow connected to the large corporations.

We have to go after the "Fat Cat" executives who are living in their Ivory Towers with not a care in the world. Their multimillion dollar bonuses really **** me off!

Having said what I have I agree that seeing prices differences and dramatic drops in a short time period really are unjustified.

Having owned 3 Chevrons in the past...it was a little different for us and our pay structure...we got payed a perdium...so much per day, had nothing to do with gas prices...we made the same ...prices could be high or low, it made no difference to us...we made our living from the items in the store, not on so much per litre, or as the above poster said.
When someone drove off without paying, that came out of my pocket....when staff stole from us, my babies mouth.....

We as retailers, adgents, locally owned and operated etc...all had/have different means of pay...so don't blame the little guy, he's just the TAX collector.

and then there is always the municipal gas taxes for roads, transit, etc.

i have to laugh, knowing the gvrd border between langley and abbotsford is at 276th st.. or some know it as station road on the fraser highway.. there is a little mall on the west side where there is a safeway that used to run a gas station. up the road there is an esso
then a shell station went in on the east side of station road on fraser highway and gas was always at least 3 cents and sometimes 5 or more cents a litre cheaper.
so now there is no gas station at safeway. lol

as for the fluctuating gas prices, gastips dot com , is a good place to check for the cheap??? deals. and yes, the stations get so much a litre from the gas whether gas is 1.10 a litre or 90 cents a litre. the government scoops a ton of the money, and have to pay for new roads, bridges, upgrades, transit, etc. that is why abbotsford is cheaper, the transit bus service isnt there.

something for another thread.. who wants the port mann fixed? i think,, build the bridge,, make it at least 8 lanes wide.. and then four lane the freeway from horseshoe bay.. at least.. all the way out to chilliwack.. i would rather pay more in taxes now than to have the government cheap out... remember the rumor of the tunnel? we can make it a 6 lane tunnel for a million more.. the government said no and thats why richmonds tunnel sucks. thankfully the alex fraser helps.. and the engineers did a great job of making it so one can get around richmond in half the time that it took 20 odd years ago. im sure the engineers were all fired for doing something right.. lol

anyway.. you can pay the money now.. or later.. no matter what .. the govenment is gonna get you somehow. only way to fight it is to cut back on gas and stuff.

A lot of the price we see is reflected upon the price of the barrel as of 3 months ago. So the price per barrel you saw at the beginning of June is a direct reflection of the price now. Also, as we get closer to the winter, price will start to rise due to the fact that the refineries will be slowing down production of gas so they can concentrate on the producing Stove Oil and Diesel for winter heating. And the gas price will rise throughout the winter as supplies dwindle.

Locally, there are issues about the taxes no one has been able to explain to me. East of 264th Street they are outside the GVRD so they are exempt from the UTT(Urban Transit Tax) which is 11c/litre. But, Their BCFT(BC Fuel Tax) is up to 14.5c/L. Whereas West of 264th, the UTT is charged, but the BCFT is down to 9c/L.

The individual station owners( I mean true independants), which are very few and far between, have absolutely nothing to say about the price. It is entirely up to the oil companies.

In terms of supply, I wouldn't even worry about running out of gas. The only thing may be how much we will be paying. A rumor I have heard, and do believe, comes from an executive at one of the larger oil companies has stated that there is enough oil in the tar sands to keep production going for well over another 100 years at the current rate of production. Thats just northern Alberta, not anywhere else in the world they are exploring.

A good reply Bulldog!

I found this explanation of gasoline taxes on the Federal website http://www.fin.gc.ca/toce/2005/gas_tax-e.html

It's from 2005 but the taxes still hold true.

Quebec has imposed a carbon tax on the oil and gas companies that will cost the companies $200,000 a year. Look for that appear in gas prices which will further raise the cost of gas because of the taxes.

I wouldn't be surprised to see something tacked onto the price of gas when the Olympics get closer. It doesn't look like we are going to be anywhere near the budget. How I wish Jimmy Pattison was running the Olympic show.

I haven't driven for two months...broke a leg...can't drive a standard with a broken leg. I actually haven't missed the car that much although I'm restricted to the 7km radius of the ole whizzer wheelchair. I'm looking forward to getting back behind the wheel but I will likely continue to drive less. The advantage to living 6 blocks from were I work and 4 blocks from all the shopping I generally need.

I grew up there...said I'd never go back... but crap... everything out here is gettin so much more expensive... It's pretty bad when there is a $0.30 difference amongst provinces!

Here's the good news!

We have reached the global oil production peak. That means the end of cheap high quality (Light, sweet) oil. The rest of it will be harder to get ie our oil won't be under somebody else's sand, and it will be of a harder grade to refine. (Heavy, sour) and a big water cut. They inject water into oil wells to pump it out as the wells are bled dry.
So, estimates range between 10 to 37 years before the end of oil. As we loose the ability to create and distribute a loaf of bread, there will be a global die-off or die-back.
Just think of what we use oil for and it gets scary.
Me, I'm investing in Schwinn and any other bike company that will take my money.

I think what people should do is not buy gas from one gas station for a week ,than go to another gas station and do the same .If there not getting bussiness for a week that hurts .Another thing is right. Dont buy your pop and coffee from them or your smokes .Maybe the owner of the store doesnt deserve that but the only way to get it threw the gas companys heads is that gas is to much . What that will do will shut the gas station down if the owner is not making money or all the owners will have to complain to the gas companys aswell .

Knighthawk, That idea has been mulled around and thought of many times in the past. What people don't realize is the sheer volume of gas that is used just in the lower mainland. I know for a fact, and yes it is fact, I have seen the paperwork at the distribution terminal. The smallest of the 4 distribution terminals goes through, consistantly, 800,000 to 1,200,000 litres of regular gas alone on a daily basis. Yes, every 24 period, they distribute over 1,000,000 liters of regular gasoline, and have done consistantly for more than a decade. So the idea of not buying from one specific station, or oil company for a week means nothing. It just makes the rest of the stations busier. And the majority of fuel used here is on an exchange basis with one refinery or another. So, If you stop buying from Shell, the rest of them will use up what stock they have in the tanks and end up buying from Shell when they run out. It happens every month and nobody knows a thing. Its all the same crap, just with a different name on the handle and the odd additive is different.

Good Luck changing big business and the government. Its a vicious cycle and try what you may, petroleum products will be used regardless of whether it is you, me or the next guy. Save money, park your car, take the bus, they still use diesel. All you will be doing is saving your own money. The oil companies will still be getting rich from everyone else.

Wow! Nighthawk. Bulldog. And me with a weinie sounding nick.

Your replies are well thought out and conventional. Even if these things worked regionally, it would make no difference. Oil is a finite resource and we are approaching the end of it. Our lifestyles are built on the squandering of oil. Without oil the Island will starve. There are things we can't build without oil. How about a bike helmet? Take plastics out of a helmet and what do you have left?

Will we find an alternative fuel source in time? I don't know. I'm not that smart, but I know there will be some interesting times ahead of us.

you need an electric pump graded for use with gas. Then you need somewhere to store it. maybe oil drums filled with the gas in the back of a 1 ton truck. Just go to to a closed gas station at night and start pumping.

you all complain and pass around emails telling everyone to "not buy gas for 1 day", so that the price may drop. But how many of you ever back that up? Ride a bike. Take a bus. You're all slaves to your automobile. To all of you, gasoline is more addictive than nicotine, coffee, and heroin COMBINED

Get your ass out of the car and onto a bike.
Looking around these days, more people could use the excercise!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kevlar,

I do happen to ride a bike, unfortunately I can't ride it 50kms to work and back again on the freeway, or I would. And moving closer to work isn't an option, neither is quitting. Think before you speak my friend. If I had a choice I would definitely rather take transit or ride a bike. But my career comes first, not going to quit my job just to save on gas. Cos odds are,I wouldn't get the same wages elsewhere.

did you catch the news today? ...or are you a listener of a local popular news-talk radio station?

The radio station has gone on a crusade about the gouging on our gas prices, and done their home work! We pay THE HIGHEST gas prices in North America, even higher than the UK or France (tax out)!!! Yet no-one can explain why...?

Seems the NDP have taken up the cause to regulate the gouging with a private members bill to have the utilities commission regulate the gouging.

What do you think? Aside from the obvious that we are being gouged...do you think profits should be regulated...or that the government should pull all tax breaks unless they re-open the 25 refineries they closed in the last 25 yrs?(18 in the last 5 yrs).

Let's not forget, our local prices are HIGHEST after the taxes are removed, on average by 10-20 cents a litre!!!

I saw a segment on the eastern news yesterday about how Ontarians are in an uproar over gas prices skyrocketing to 97 cents a litre!

Imagine that! 97 cents! When the price drops down to that I am estatic!

NDP have taken up the cause to regulate

When I hear the "NDP" and "regulate" in the same sentence I cringe......

never mind the price of gas where is my electric car.they are out there but i can't afford one.lets get off gas altogether and let me bring home my little no pollutant car that gets about 400 k on a single charge.why is it not happening that my car spews out water instead of carbon dioxide.the wars for gas would be over and we might just do some good for the planet and our children who will take on what we leave them.all this chat about going green and saving what we have now but such a simple solution to such a huge problem.why isn't this happening now instead of waiting till the oil companies drain the planet and there isn't any oil left.then will i get my little car?

Conspiracy Theory #1

Retail prices are set by the wholesalers, which are controlled by the refiners, ie: the Oil Companies.

The Government has done numerous 'investigations' about price fixing at the Retail Level, of course, IS NOT WHERE THE PRICE FIXING IS.

We must remember, the Government takes a bigger Tax Slice out of higher prices.

Why would the Government force the reduction of prices, when the Consumer is WILLING TO PAY ?

EDIT: I spend more money on gas, than I pay for the cup of coffee I drive to, to buy.
