She was just the Governor of our state, the one that got the Lottery passed in Texas. Sad to hear she passed.

Bye Anne Richards. I thank god that she was the one that oversaw the death of the Liberal Socialist Communistic party (Democrats). She could say something funny and think it was the way to get a point across and win elections since there was no substance. Thank you former Governor for showing the way.

She was an inspiration to women and worked to uplift women in politics and promote women who did great things in their communities.
I loved her Texas twang and I loved those road map lines in her face that showed she'd lived long and weathered many storms. She was beautiful.

I'll never forget her for this one ... it was absolutely priceless ... so funny and so right!

Richards's keynote address to the 1988 Democratic National Convention put her in the national spotlight when she uttered the famous line, about the wealthy, then-Vice President George H. W. Bush, "Poor George, he can't help it...He was born with a silver foot in his mouth."

What a great woman!

Putting politics aside, Ann Richards exemplified in life the fact that what we choose to overcome we can. Coming from poor beginnings in Texas she overcame problems only a few to include alcoholism and the struggle with cancer. She recognized it's nice to be a have a pretty face but even better to be smart! She was a strong woman with personality and drive. She tempered her thoughts with humor and had a kind heart. As a mother of 2 girls l9 and 20 I can only hope they take a page from her book and strive to be independent, strong women with minds of their own who continue to realize each of us are human with both strengths and weaknesses.

Ann Richards in many ways was a true Pioneer. We have lost a great spokeswoman for women everywhere ---- may God keep her and her family are in my prayers. Thanks Ann for showing us Texas gals have both spunk and class, many times when the chips are down.

She was our 45th Govenor and the first woman to be elected to that office in our state.
My favorite image will always be the photo of her sitting astride the Harley. She got her motorcycle license on her birthday, I believe it was her 60th.
She remains an inspiration to the older woman...

This is one I just had to post on. Sorry she's dead but she was one of the WORSE govs the state ever had. She was wonderful in helpin the Repub's take over the state and was great at puttin a face on democrats that showed them for what they are. Just like the lottery.. everythin was promised and everythin has turned out to be all lies. She pushed that thru and the state has used almost none of the money the way it was intended (imagine that).

She was supposedly not a politician, but talked and acted like one from day one she began to run for office. This is not a loss nor is it some special day and she doesn't deserve to be remembered fondly. Maybe by family or ppl who know her personally, but the legacy she left as gov certainly doesn't deserve acclaim.

Haven't you ever heard the phrase "Don't speak ill of the dead"? And While her politics brought her to the attention of both critics and fans, you must admit that she was a S.I.K.A.W.

Strong Independent Kick A** Woman! And deserves to be remembered as a good role model.

Shocked me too. I was watching tv while working when the news broke. Kind of "oh man, Ann died?" Very sociable woman. She was always able to talk as if she were talking to a friend even if surrounded by strangers. She definitely opend some doors and proved you don't have to be a "b-word" to be strong! We'll miss you Ann. 1933-2006

In her first run in the primary for Governor, there was a glitch in her schedule and she walked into a resturant a full hour before she was supposed to. I invited her over to help her avoid any embarrassment. I had a one on one conversation with her for that full hour. I have never laughed that hard in my whole life. She was absolutely charming, funny as hell, abviously intelligent, had great ideas and actually listened to what I had to say and engaged me in conversation about my ideas while gently suggesting that some of hers may work better. She had the bluest eyes I have ever seen and although her years showed in her face she was as beautiful as anyone I have ever seen. Yep folks, that was a real Texas woman and the type of woman I have admired all of my life. I had been leaning toward Mark White as he had been a pretty decent Governor in the past but she walked out that place with my vote and also with the votes of damn near everone in the place. What a woman.

I suppose as she is one of my heroes, I will forgive her for letting Dubya beat her in the Governors race for her second term. I can not help but think what a better world we would be living in had she trounced him in that election and we never heard from him again.

"Ma" Ferguson was elected governor in 1924.

As far as Richards, she was passionate about her job... but was more interested in politics than she ever was about Texas IMO.

Outlaw, if you talked to any department head during her administration you will find most got those frequent calls that began as "Good morning_______, This is Ann". She was totally active and worked with Bob Bullock on every issue. Texas is a weak Governor State and the most powerful tool a sitting Governor has is influence and she used it as well as anyone. The one thing that was true before these modern day pretty boys took office that Texas Politics was about Texas and not about some national agenda. You might also remember that she left her office with a surplus in the State coffers, that was quickly spent by the incoming administration.

She will be missed. I remember having the opportunity to run in to her at the airport in Austin. She was surrounded by a bunch of beaming southern ladies, and her entourage was nowhere in site. I slipped a convention badge over my neck, (and I was wearing a suit at the time) and escorted her out of the area saying we would be late. This caused some laughs amongst the convention since she was going to be a guest speaker that night. She related the story and said that she finally found a group of drunk young men she could trust. Never missed a chance to smile, and always made the best of a bad situation.

Texas Baby, I looked this up in the Texas handbook. Amanda "Ma" Ferguson was ELECTED Governor in 1924 and once again in 1932. She put her name on the ballot after her husband failed to secure a place on the ballot himself. When Ann Richards ran for Governor, someone asked my mother if she would vote for a woman for governor. Her response was "of course and Ann Richards will not be the first woman I ever voted for for Governor".
