| I need serious advice Posted: 9/18/2006 8:50:19 PM | I never posted on here before but im in a bit of a dilemma.I met this girl through another dating site(not that this one isnt good). This is the situation she is currently in africa due to some family issues and is stuck there trying to make it back to the states.I already sent her 60 dollars for food. Now in order for her to make it back to come see me she needs more money.I think she needs like 555 dollars to leave.
Now i told her i wasnt going to do it but maybe i could send her 300 if she can come up with the rest of the money. She told me she is recieving a check from her deceased fathers business for 4000 and she is going to cash it when she gets to the states.i have talked to her through IMs for the last 4 days.
Now i think she is truthfully an honest person, but i have doubts because i have never been asked for something like this before.Do you think i should trust her and help her out?I am really confused but she seemed really sincere and has no other person to go to for help. That seemed to be the whole reason she was looking for someone on the dating site to begin with.

| I need serious advice Posted: 9/18/2006 8:56:05 PM | Lostboy,,
This is one of the oldest scams on the internet. Don't send "her" a penny.
|
| I need serious advice Posted: 9/18/2006 8:59:53 PM | | Unfortunately there are ALOT of scams on the internet. Africa is currently a hot spot for the scams, but not the only place the scams come from. | |
|
| I need serious advice Posted: 9/18/2006 9:00:59 PM | Thats a tough one that only you are going to have decide.
For better or worse, I've always been generous when its come to giving and loaning money. In my lifetime, I've probably loaned out more money then i've spent myself....lol
I've been burned and I've been paid back.
It's always a risk when you do it
And then again, it might be a big ole' scam!

She told me she is recieving a check from her deceased fathers business for 4000 and she is going to cash it when she gets to the states Um now there's your clue I would think
If she has the check She can cash it in Africa eh and get her own ticket to come see you the love of her life Or if her bank is in America she can send YOU the check and you can bank it for her eh? Then access the funds via her card or on the net
Sounds pretty straight forward to me Whatever you do, dont give out your bank details Not for ANY reason
Pls note on POF it says somewhere quite clearly If someone asks you for money its a scam
Have you met this person? Do you know for sure they have ever been in America?
Proceed with caution | |

This is the situation she is currently in africa due to some family issues and is stuck there trying to make it back to the states. This is a scam.

Before I found out about POF, I was on another site, and I was hounded by so many scammers asking me to send them money. Don't send another penny. They are using your heart-strings as a source of income.
Honestly, wtf would you put yourself - of all places - on a dating site to ask for help!? If you are stranded in a different country or whatever the scam is, would you have that much free time to write and answer emails over days, weeks? A real person would be running around trying to contact friends/family/embassy/etc to find a way back.
Do you drink Evian (<-- spell this word backwards) bottled water?
My $0.02. | |

| I need serious advice Posted: 9/18/2006 9:30:13 PM | Someone who has access to a computer and the internet several days a week isn't usually lacking for food.
Don't let this person take advantage of your heart. There are plenty of ways your money can be spent helping others.
|

Someone who has access to a computer and the internet several days a week isn't usually lacking for food. I got contacted by one of these women once. Stuck in Nigeria without a cent. 1st obvious thing was, how are you using a computer?? 2nd was: where did you get pictures of yourself, in a bikini, that look like they were professionally taken in a studio?
|
| I need serious advice Posted: 9/18/2006 9:47:00 PM | And im not going to fall for it.Thats why i asked about it.No need to make me feel any dumber. Scammers play on people's kindness. People get scammed all the time and the only person who should feel dumb is the scammer.
You had the heart to care about another person but the sense to know that something wasn't right...otherwise, you wouldn't have asked. Sometimes we just need confirmation.
I agree with capn. This thread may help others.

| I need serious advice Posted: 9/18/2006 9:48:01 PM | FWIW, some of those "gals" (?) are really good at tugging on the ole heart-strings. No doubt they have become pros at it through lots of practice.
A while back I almost fell for one out of Russia... till I contacted the US Embassy in Moscow and found out that no such person exists in Russia.
Now I have groundrules... and one of them is when a gal requests money, here or overseas, the conversation is over.
