| Have you ever gotten scammed? Posted: 9/23/2006 3:11:35 PM | I recently met a guy my age on another dating site. We sent a couple of emails back & forth to each other. He came on very strong, asking me to take my profile on that site down, wanting to become exclusive. He is from my state but about 200 miles away, which in my mind is a little far to go to date someone. I did explain that to him but he thinks we could make it work. He is very sweet & even wrote me poetry. He is an artist & also works as an art buyer out of London. He provided me with a link that shows some of his work. He has given me his first & last names.
Well anyway, he explains that he is on a buying trip in London & has to spend a week in western Africa to buy. So yesterday I was chatting with him. He says he's not having a good day, that he can't use his credit cards there & he is worried about having to eat the next week. I suggest that he contact his business partner & maybe have some money wired to him. He says he can't contact his business partner because he is in India on a buying trip, could I loan him $100-200. I told him no I can't because I live paycheck to paycheck. We chatted a little longer & he got off line.
I think I smell a fish. What do you guys think? By the way, he was online today but did not contact me nor email me.

a: The person is a liar and is trying to rip me off b: The person is an idiot and has been ripped off and doesn't know it yet and wants me to join him/her in the pool!
Excitement in a sales pitch is equal to a lie.

| Have you ever gotten scammed? Posted: 9/23/2006 4:07:07 PM | | That sounds like a guy I came in contact with before and I reported him, it may have been a different site. He supposedly was in Africa and ran out of money, blab blab. Report him, although he probably can come in with another name. | |

| Have you ever gotten scammed? Posted: 9/23/2006 6:57:10 PM | you shouldn't even have to ask for opinions.
He's got no-one in the world to go to for money, (friends, relatives, bank? etc), except someone he's traded a couple emails with??????? He travels overseas for business, but he's stupid enough to get caught in a foriegn country with no source of cash?? Does any of that sound truthful to you?
You know, even if he was telling the truth, why would you want him? A guy your age, who's already wanting to sponge money off of you, after a couple of emails, isn't the best choice of relationship material.

| Have you ever gotten scammed? Posted: 9/24/2006 8:43:23 PM | | I went on another site as well. My first day on I received 20 emails. After chatting with a few and asking questions I discovered a similarity amongst them that was way beyond coincidental. After chatting a very short while, they all decided they were in love with. Realistically, if men fell in love with me that easily, I wouldn't have to be on these things! Anyway, I proceeded with my questioning. Amazingly they were all from the states, all working some type of construction in Africa, all widowed in the last five years, and....this is the best....every one of them had a 10 yr. old son named John! I had heard about the "African scammers" so I proceeded to tell them they were out of luck with me as I had no money! Havn't heard from them since and took my name off matchdotcom fast! I have never had that happen at any other website. So, it is definately a big fish that you smell!!!! | |

Posted: 9/25/2006 10:10:23 AM | If one falls in love with you too quickly; if they ask you for a financial favor; or any other type of personal information from early on, those are red flashing lights. Also, be wary of some of the "pity" stories these folks may come up with.
In 1991, I met a fella through a personals ad in the newspaper. His name was Guiy DeMontfort. We went out a couple of times, he confessed he wasn't attracted to me because I was "too fat" for his taste. However, he did rent a room from me. At the beginning of our meeting, he claimed his wife and son were killed in a car crash in Africa. He had a british accent and seemed very intelligent. He was like a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. One of the things he tried to do was buy a SUV through my corporation (he came across the tax ID # and figured he could apply using that), he wasn't able to get the loan, thankfully so. He conned people across North America with his financial schemes, his victims weren't just women, but they were different ages and professions. He was able to amass $1-2 million through his cons. Myself and another woman turned him over to the police (he bounced rent checks to me). He was held in jail for 9 months. He went to Arizona, married a woman, she annulled the marriage after 6 months. He is now in the Maricopa County Jail for money laundering and drug trafficking for the rest of his life.

| Have you ever gotten scammed? Posted: 9/25/2006 11:30:34 AM | | It amazes me how women who are looking for someone willing to devote their lives, time and wealth to a relationship can't be troubled to wire a few hundred bucks to a man they have only met online. I mean, what if he was The One? | |

| Have you ever gotten scammed? Posted: 9/25/2006 12:21:07 PM | ....and here I thought that "Nigerian Scam Artists" was the name of a new performing arts group, sort of like the "Blue Man Crew, or is it Blue Man Group?" Seriously....the other "match" site mentioned above does have its share of these. I was even approached by one by an e-mail, and I'm a male! Same story, but it all unfolded in one e-mail, about how he was on the business trip to Nigeria, and was in need of immediate funds, and if I "invested" in his enterprise, I would triple my investment within days! I did report him, and got an e-mail saying that his account would be deleted immediately. I replied with the idea of having him arrested immediately, but they weren't going for that. These people who do this over and over CAN be tracked and identified. These sites just don't want the negative publicity that would bring, so they delete the account, and let them open a new one! BEWARE everyone, not just ladies! | |

| Have you ever gotten scammed? Posted: 9/25/2006 3:03:22 PM | | I never lend money to anyone I don't know well and, even then, I don't lend any more than I'm prepared to lose. I've never been a sucker for those hard luck stories. | |

| Have you ever gotten scammed? Posted: 9/25/2006 3:44:41 PM | Well, I'm embarrassed to write this but I feel I must inform my fellow POF friends,in case this happens to you.
About three weeks ago I answered a knock on my door and two middle aged ladies said they were from the Health Department and were checking for signs and symptoms of 'Asian Bird Flu' They asked me to take my clothes off, put my hands under my armpits, flop my arms and jump up and down. If this happens to you ...DON"T DO IT!!! It's a scam..they just want to see you naked. I feel so stupid now.

| Have you ever gotten scammed? Posted: 9/25/2006 5:39:48 PM | MsWW: That very same thing just happened to my girl friend back east. I'm in CA. Anyway, she sent me their conversation and it sounds exactly like your situation. I thought it was a scam because I'd heard of it before and after seeing their conversation, I know for sure it was. | |

| Have you ever gotten scammed? Posted: 9/25/2006 8:18:50 PM | | there are more and more of these scammers on dating sites but they are usually pretty easy to spot. First look for discrepencies from their profile to their initial email. Second, even though they claim to be well educated their emails or profile paragraphs are normally filled with grammatical errors and mispelled words. Many of them are conveniently out of the country on business. Most also include a yahoo email address in their initial email for you to contact them at. Also check the photo against the profile description they usually do not match up well. also beware of over the top initial greetings - if it sounds too good to be true chances are it is too good to be true... | |

| Have you ever gotten scammed? Posted: 9/25/2006 8:20:22 PM | $100-200 is nothing. I let a the woman I lived with for two years do the books for my business and when we parted ways and she left my home, I was embezzled for all told around $90,000 and lost my business, which was my livelihood. Dont sweat the small stuff, kid. | |

| Have you ever gotten scammed? Posted: 9/25/2006 9:11:58 PM | Yep scam for sure. I've learned the hard way that they love people who have soft hearts and want to help. But anyone asking for money online is a scam. Cost me a lot of money to find that one out. Delete him and move on. | |

| Have you ever gotten scammed? Posted: 9/25/2006 9:26:01 PM | That happened to me, too, through matchdoctor.com. Two different guys emailed me, both had been widowed five years, both listed themselves as having engineering or managerial type jobs, but their emails were full of typos. They both abbreviated the word "because" like this: b'cos. Both were in South Africa on business and both emails started out, "I must confess that I find your profile (or photo)...blah, blah, blah." AND, they both immediately asked for private email and instant messaging IDs. I reported them, but don't know if anything was done about it or not.
Ladies, beware! | |

| Have you ever gotten scammed? Posted: 9/26/2006 12:47:08 AM | I was approached by two different men through Yahoo IMs. Both claimed to be "working" in Africa (Nigeria) and one guy said he was from Arizona (where I'm at). When I asked him THREE times where in Arizona he was from, he couldn't name a single city.
Both guys had "professionally written" profiles, very nice and neat and sincere, but in an IM or email, neither could spell worth a crap, couldn't put a sentence together and apparently couldn't find the shift key to capitalize anything. When I called one guy's bluff and said I didn't have any money for him to "visit" me, I never heard from him again - which was exactly what I expected to hear.
I guess you have to take every email or IM with a grain of salt and never believe anyone. Sad isn't it?

| Have you ever gotten scammed? Posted: 9/26/2006 2:32:01 AM | | Don't do it. This is a major scam at the present..men and women who claim to live in the states but are stuck in Africa and need to borrow money. You will see them on most dating sites and 90% will give you either a yahoo email address or a hotmail email address. It is just a different tack on the old nigerian bank scam. My advice is to report any contacts like that to the site and block them afterwards. | |
